Islam
The Hadith II
Dr. Robert Patton
Women
 More women than men are in hell –
they are ungrateful to their husbands
 Women are inferior mentally and in
religion
Women
 Allah is unpleased with a woman who
refuses to have sex with her husband
until her husband is pleased with her
again
Women
 Woman in adultery – stoned to
death. The man gets 100 lashes
and exile for one year
 A woman pregnant out of wedlock
shames the family. One solution
is no education and marry young
Women
 There are a number of rules for
women during menstruation.
 However, they are also found
among the Jews, and in
 most oral cultures have a number
of taboos
Women
 Women should be accompanied by her
husband or a close male relative if she
travels more than a day
 The wife cannot fast without her
husband’s permission, and only allow
persons into the home by her husband’s
permission
Women
 The most important thing about a
woman is sex.
 Temporary wives are also OK – by
agreement.
 Forced sex on captives is permitted
Women
 No tattoos – done on others or to
yourself
 No prostitution
 Even male in-laws should be careful
going into a woman’s home
Al-Ghazali - Allah’s punishment
of women
 Menstruation
 Childbirth
 Separation from parents and
marriage to a stranger
Al-Ghazali - Allah’s punishment
of women
 Pregnancy
 No control over her own person
 Lesser share in inheritance
Al-Ghazali - Allah’s punishment
of women
 She can suffer divorce but cannot
divorce
 OK for men to have 4 wives, but
women only one husband
Al-Ghazali - Allah’s punishment
of women
 Stay secluded in the house
 Keep her head covered in the
house
 Testimony worth ½ of a man’s
Al-Ghazali on Allah’s punishment
of women
 Must be accompanied by a near
relative to go out of the house
 Cannot participate in Friday and feast
day prayers and funerals like men
 Cannot rule or be a judge
 Merit of 1000, 999 are men and 1 for
women
Al-Ghazali - Allah’s punishment
of women
 If the husband dies, they must
wait 4 months and 10 days before
remarrying
 If divorced, they must wait 3
months or 3 menstrual periods
before remarrying
Sex
 There are a variety of rules for
both men and women to wash or
clean themselves. These are
spelled out in great detail
Sex
 Temporary wife is OK if you
simply give her a garment
 Do not worry about getting
captured slave girls pregnant
Sex
 If a woman refuses sex to her
husband, the angels are angry that
entire night
 Ok to have sex with captured women
whose husbands are alive after their
menstrual cycle
 Exact methods of sex explicitly
mentioned
Apostates
 Kill for 3 reasons – murder, adultery,
and apostacy
 Those who kill apostates will be
rewarded at judgment day
Apostates
 Muhammad’s handling murderers – cut
off hands and feet, gouge out eyes with
hot pokers, throw on sharp rocks to die
of thirst
Folk Islamic Beliefsstion
 Muhammad – some folk Islamic beliefs
 Magic – felt he was hexed, cured by
Allah, but later filled in the well where
the witchcraft was supposedly
 Believed in the evil eye – claimed
Abraham did
 Eat food that fell down and clean your
fingers; don’t leave any for Satan
Folk Islamic beliefs& folk
Islam
 Satan touches everyone with two
fingers at birth except Jesus – missed
and touched the placenta
 Keep children close to you for the first
hour of the day
Folk Islamic beliefs& folk
Islam
 3 knots in the back of the sleeper’s
head.
 Think of Allah, and one loosened;
 purified, another untied;
 say prayers, the third untied
Folk Islamic beliefs
 Stifle a yawn – Allah hates it, but
loves sneezing – then say “May
Allah give you mercy”
 Satan cannot enter a closed door.
 Cap your bottles, cover dishes,
and pray to Allah
Folk Islamic beliefs
 Good dreams from Allah; bad
dreams from Satan:
 Then ask Allah’s protection and
blow to the left 3 times and you
are protected
Jinns (form of evil spirit)
 Roam at night. Eat dung and bones
 Cover dishes, cap water, lock doors,
turn out the lights
 Some jinns investigated a barrier to
them, heard the Qur’an and were
converted
Science
 Muhammad claims that at night the sun
goes under the throne of Allah and
awaits permission to rise
Science
 Only Allah knows the sex of a child in
utero, the weather, and the time and
place someone will die
 Everyone going to paradise will have
the form of Adam
After conception
 40 days as a clot of blood in the
mother’s womb, then 40 days as
a piece of flesh
After conception folk
religion
 Then an angel is sent to
pronounce four words that
determine his actions, his time of
death, his occupation, and
whether he will be blessed or
cursed by Allah
More “science”
 The first sign of judgment is a
great fire uniting east and west
 The first meal in paradise is fish
liver
and more science
 If a mouse falls in fat, throw the
mouse and surrounding fat away
 If a fly drops in liquid, submerge the
fly and then discard it
 Black cumin can cure any disease
except death
Bodily functions
 Spit to the left or behind your foot
 Do not go to the bathroom facing
Mecca or directly away from it; if
necessary, turn your face and ask
Allah’s forgiveness
 Use your left hand to clean yourself
when using the bathroom
Bodily functions
 Pray for Allah’s protection
 Make ablutions on awakening
 You must repeat your prayer if
going to the bathroom or passing
gas
Animals
 Dogs – just to hunt or guard a farm. If
he licks something, wash it 7 times.
No pets
 Prayers nullified if a dog, an ass, or a
woman passes before them
 All black dogs should be killed
 No money from dogs, prostitution, or
fortune telling
Snakes & other critters
 Kill snakes, especially with 2 stripes
down the back, or short or mutilated
tails, which can cause miscarriages &
blindness
 Breeding fees are illegal
 Crows see angels; donkeys see Satan
Art
 Angels will not enter homes with
pictures or a dog inside
 Pictures of people are forbidden
unless you can bring them to life
Muhammad
 Big hands and feet
 Average size and build, curly longish
hair, first not parted, later parted
Muhammad
 Debates as to whether he died his
hair
 He was unusually white
 He often got angry; he cursed others
Muhammad’s wives
 Favorite – Aisha. Legally married age 6
or 7; took to his home and consumated
age 9. Still played with dolls with her
girlfriends – permitted by Muhammad
 Total I saw was at least 10 – first group
of four: Aisha, Safiya, Haifsa & Sauda.
When 40, Sauda gave her turn sleeping
with Muhammad to Aisha
Muhammad’s wives
 Safiya was taken as a wife and not
just as a slave girl
 None of Muhammad’s wives in
Medina were ever pregnant
 He had a beautiful Coptic pleasure
slave with whom he spent much time;
she bore him a son
Muhammad’s wives
 After allowing Coptic slave Mary,
into his harem in Medina, his
wives began to argue and got him
mad.
 He separated from all for 29
days.
 Then each in turn stated that she
wanted to remain married to him.
Was Muhammad
illiterate?
 He was certainly intelligent as a
businessman.
 Apparently he asked for the
chance to write last instructions
prior to his death – so probably
not illiterate
Muhammad’s night trip
 Tradition states that Muhammad went
to heaven with Gabriel after he was
washed with water from Zamzam.
 He was addressed by many, including
Adam, Idris, Moses, Jesus and
Abraham as a holy man and prophet
Muhammad’s night trip
 He was given 50 prayers, which
were finally reduced to 5 after
Moses suggested that 50 were
too many.
Muhammad’s habits
 Always worked from right to left
 Did not like the smell of onions or
garlic
 Did not like clouds in the sky
Muhammad’s habits
 Don’t stand and eat or drink
 Put on the right sandal first
 Don’t lie on your back with one
foot crossed on top another
Muhammad’s modesty
 Apparently modest
 Did not appear nude
 When he went to the toilet,
someone followed with a stick,
staff and water
Muhammad’s slaves
 There were several quotes that
showed he had a lot of slaves
 Muhammad loved jihad,
The Qur’an
 Believed to be God’s inspired words,
word for word without omission,
mistakes or errors existing before
creation.
The Qur’an
 Given by Gabriel – the first time he
appeared to Muhammad in the cave,
 Gabriel squeezed him tightly and
commanded to read. He claimed that
he could not read.
Qur’an
 Returning home, he asked his wife to
hide himself
 She took him to Waraqa, a Christian,
who told him that it was Gabriel, who
had also been sent to Moses, and that
he would be opposed.
Qur’an
 Originally written on date palm
leaves, stones, parchment, bones,
etc.
 Given to Abu Bakr, to Umar, and
eventually to his daughter Hafsa
Qur’an
 Gabriel recited it in 7 different
dialects
 Sometimes the inspiration is like a
bell, and at other times, the angel in
the body of a man
Qur’an
 For a while, revelations ceased after
Waraqa died.
 Muhammad showed that some verses
were abrogated later, and some were
metaphorical
Qur’an
 Uthman commanded Zaid, Said,
Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman to collect
the verses of the Qur’an.
 If disagreements about the verse in
Arabic, they could also use the
language of the Quraysh.
Qur’an
 There were many died in battle who had
memorized the sayings, so now it is put
down in writing
Sharia law
Islam is a perfect cultural, political,
social and religious system from God
All Kafirs are man-made and offensive to
God
Sharia is political Islam
Jihad is war against Kafirs commanded
by both the Qur’an and hadiths
Sharia law
 Jihad is a community obligation – for
example, supplying a fighter. All sane
men after puberty must fight
 Leave a battle only if ill, wounded,
without a weapon, or Kafirs outnumber
you 2:1. Flee only for tactical
advantage
Sharia law
 Don’t kill women or children unless
fighting against Muslims.
 You can kill old men and monks.
 Don’t kill those who have submitted
Sharia law
 Have a truce or cease-fire only when
you need time to regroup.
 Never have a cease-fire when you have
the upper hand.
 No truce may last longer than 10 years
Sharia law
 Spoils – personal go to persons.
 Communal – 1/5 to Islam, the rest
divided among the fighters
 You can have as much spoil as
you can carry
Dhimmi protection under
Shari’a law
 Christians and Jews are
protected as long as they follow
the dhimmi laws and pay jizya
 The rules of dhimmi have been
outlined elsewhere
Apostates
 Apostates deserve death
 The spouse must wait 3 months, and
if the person persists in apostacy,
they are automatically divorced
Scourging
 Not in extreme heat or cold
 Not during pregnancy
 Whip not new or old
 Delivered to multiple areas, but not to
the face or vital organs
 Man standing; woman sitting and
covered
Stoning
 Done despite temperature, but not ill –
wait for recovery; for pregnancy until
the child is weaned.
 Kill homosexuals or lesbians
 Does not like masculine women or
effeminate men
Man and wife
 Wife should have sex whenever the
man wants unless physically unable
 Man can take wife with him.
 He can give permission in the city for
her to go for religion or see female
friends.
Man and wife
 Travel outside requires a male
relative.
 He must give permission for
those who come into his house
Rebellious wives
 Wife gives cold answer or refuses sex.
He is to warn her first,
 then refuse to sleep with her,
 As a last resort, to beat her, but not
on the face, or to draw blood or cause
injury.
Rebellious wives
 He also can refuse to support her if
she travels without his permission
 Also if she refuses sex when able
Injuries
 No payment for kafirs, apostates,
adulterers
 For accidental killing Muslim, blood
money or 2 months fasting
 Deliberate murder of a Muslim –
eternity in hell
Predestinationn
 There is a sense of
predestination.
 The Qur’an says that good deeds
are easy for the blessed and evil
deeds are easy for the cursed
Predestinationn
 The blessed will testify that
Muhammad is the slave of Allah and
his prophet
 People will see Allah on the judgment
day
Judgment day
 On that day, everyone will be
thrown into hell except Muslims,
Jews and Christians.
 They will be asked who they
worship
Judgment day
 Jews will say Ezra, son of God; they
will be deceived and go to hell; Allah
has no son
 Christians will say Jesus, son of God;
they will be thrown in hell because
Allah has no son
Judgment day
 Muhammad is superior spiritually to
Adam, Noah, Moses and Jesus…. the
most superior man in all creation.
 He will intercede for people and God
will listen to him although they will not
listen to Jesus.
Judgment day
 Men will come naked and
uncircumcised as they were at birth.
 Abraham will be the first person
dressed.
 Some Muslims will also be thrown
into hell as apostates
Hell and Paradise
 Hell will ask for more persons until
finally Allah stops it as full
 Paradise will have more space;
Allah can make more people to fill
it.
Hell and Paradise
 Do not pray for a kafir
 He saw a vision of people being
punished in hell for apostasy, greed,
usury
 Deliberate suicide does not go to
paradise
Ethical dualism
 There is a fundamental difference
between a Kafir and a Muslim.
 In some situations, you can respect a
Kafir, and tolerate him, but he is
NEVER equal to a Muslim.
 When dominant, Islam MUST suppress
the Kafir
Ethical dualism
 Islam is BOTH Meccan and Medinan.
 You cannot remove one or the other.
 It is perfect, and cannot reform.
 Any peace is temporary
What is necessary
 Shahada: The statement of both one
God is Allah and his final prophet is
Muhammad are BOTH needed.
 You must worship Allah precisely as
Muhammad did
It
What is necessary
 It is not the religion that needs
reformation as much as the
politics, which causes fear.
 Islam is universal and eternal
Religious & Political Islam
 Religious Islam – how to go to paradise
and avoid hell = Actually a minor part
of Islam
 Political Islam – how do deal with
kafirs, is the dominant part of the
trilogy
 Thus Islam is more political than
religious
Growth of Islam
 Meccan period of 13 years, 150
followers, or about 12/year
 Medinan period of 9 years – 100,000
followers, or more than 10,000 per
year
 Thus during Muhammad’s lifetime, the
growth of Islam was 0.3% religious
and 99.7% political

Still played with dolls with her girlfriends – permitted by Muhammad  Total I saw was at least 10 – first group of four: Aisha, Safiya, Haifsa & Sauda. • 51. Qur’an  Returning home, he asked his wife to hide himself  She took him to Waraqa, a Christian, who told him that it was Gabriel, who had also been sent to Moses, and that he would be opposed.
  • 52. Qur’an  Originally written on date palm leaves, stones, parchment, bones, etc.  Given to Abu Bakr, to Umar, and eventually to his daughter Hafsa
  • 53. Qur’an  Gabriel recited it in 7 different dialects  Sometimes the inspiration is like a bell, and at other times, the angel in the body of a man
  • 54. Qur’an  For a while, revelations ceased after Waraqa died.  Muhammad showed that some verses were abrogated later, and some were metaphorical
  • 55. Qur’an  Uthman commanded Zaid, Said, Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman to collect the verses of the Qur’an.  If disagreements about the verse in Arabic, they could also use the language of the Quraysh.
  • 56. Qur’an  There were many died in battle who had memorized the sayings, so now it is put down in writing
  • 57. Sharia law Islam is a perfect cultural, political, social and religious system from God All Kafirs are man-made and offensive to God Sharia is political Islam Jihad is war against Kafirs commanded by both the Qur’an and hadiths
  • 58. Sharia law  Jihad is a community obligation – for example, supplying a fighter. All sane men after puberty must fight  Leave a battle only if ill, wounded, without a weapon, or Kafirs outnumber you 2:1. Flee only for tactical advantage
  • 59. Sharia law  Don’t kill women or children unless fighting against Muslims.  You can kill old men and monks.  Don’t kill those who have submitted
  • 60. Sharia law  Have a truce or cease-fire only when you need time to regroup.  Never have a cease-fire when you have the upper hand.  No truce may last longer than 10 years
  • 61. Sharia law  Spoils – personal go to persons.  Communal – 1/5 to Islam, the rest divided among the fighters  You can have as much spoil as you can carry
  • 62. Dhimmi protection under Shari’a law  Christians and Jews are protected as long as they follow the dhimmi laws and pay jizya  The rules of dhimmi have been outlined elsewhere

  • 68. Rebellious wives  Wife gives cold answer or refuses sex. He is to warn her first,  then refuse to sleep with her,  As a last resort, to beat her, but not on the face, or to draw blood or cause injury.
  • 69. Rebellious wives  He also can refuse to support her if she travels without his permission  Also if she refuses sex when able
  • 70. Injuries  No payment for kafirs, apostates, adulterers  For accidental killing Muslim, blood money or 2 months fasting  Deliberate murder of a Muslim – eternity in hell
  • 71. Predestinationn  There is a sense of predestination.  The Qur’an says that good deeds are easy for the blessed and evil deeds are easy for the cursed
  • 72. Predestinationn  The blessed will testify that Muhammad is the slave of Allah and his prophet  People will see Allah on the judgment day
  • 73. Judgment day  On that day, everyone will be thrown into hell except Muslims, Jews and Christians.  They will be asked who they worship
  • 74. Judgment day  Jews will say Ezra, son of God; they will be deceived and go to hell; Allah has no son  Christians will say Jesus, son of God; they will be thrown in hell because Allah has no son
  • 75. Judgment day  Muhammad is superior spiritually to Adam, Noah, Moses and Jesus…. the most superior man in all creation.  He will intercede for people and God will listen to him although they will not listen to Jesus.
  • 76. Judgment day  Men will come naked and uncircumcised as they were at birth.  Abraham will be the first person dressed.  Some Muslims will also be thrown into hell as apostates
  • 77. Hell and Paradise  Hell will ask for more persons until finally Allah stops it as full  Paradise will have more space; Allah can make more people to fill it.
  • 78. Hell and Paradise  Do not pray for a kafir  He saw a vision of people being punished in hell for apostasy, greed, usury  Deliberate suicide does not go to paradise
  • 79. Ethical dualism  There is a fundamental difference between a Kafir and a Muslim.  In some situations, you can respect a Kafir, and tolerate him, but he is NEVER equal to a Muslim.  When dominant, Islam MUST suppress the Kafir
  • 80. Ethical dualism  Islam is BOTH Meccan and Medinan.  You cannot remove one or the other.  It is perfect, and cannot reform.  Any peace is temporary
  • 81. What is necessary  Shahada: The statement of both one God is Allah and his final prophet is Muhammad are BOTH needed.  You must worship Allah precisely as Muhammad did It
  • 82. What is necessary  It is not the religion that needs reformation as much as the politics, which causes fear.  Islam is universal and eternal
  • 83. Religious & Political Islam  Religious Islam – how to go to paradise and avoid hell = Actually a minor part of Islam  Political Islam – how do deal with kafirs, is the dominant part of the trilogy  Thus Islam is more political than religious
  • 84. Growth of Islam  Meccan period of 13 years, 150 followers, or about 12/year  Medinan period of 9 years – 100,000 followers, or more than 10,000 per year  Thus during Muhammad’s lifetime, the growth of Islam was 0.3% religious and 99.7% political
