 Masterbatch is a concentrated mixture of pigments and additives, used for coloring or imparting specific properties
to polymers. Masterbatch is prepared by encapsulated pigments in carrier resins, which are then cut into granular
shape or kept in a liquid state (liquid masterbatch) and later processed with base polymer. Based on its usage and
appearance, masterbatch, used for diverse applications, is classified into four major types – black, white, color and
additive.

 Masterbatch manufacturing process requires a carrier resin (polymer), colorants/pigments and additives. Different
polymer carriers can be used for the preparation of masterbatch. Depending on the resin type, masterbatch is
classified as resin polymer specific and universal masterbatch. Polymer specific masterbatch is manufactured by
using the same base polymer as used by processor. Universal masterbatch is a carrier polymer system compatible
across a wide range of polymers. Following are some of the major differences between polymer-specific and
universal masterbatch.

 Single-Stage Masterbatch Production Process: In this process, all components are combined in a single
processing unit. The process includes a premix setup, where there is only one screw feeder above the main opening
port or a split-feed setup, where every component is fed into the extruder using individual screw feeders placed
above the main feed port. This kind of the process is implemented for all masterbatch groups.

Process
 Two-Stage Masterbatch Production Process: This process is mainly used for production of colored masterbatch.
In this process, a single pigment concentrate is produced similar to the single-stage masterbatch production
process. In the extrusion step, colorants and additive single pigment concentrates are combined to produce
masterbatch. This masterbatch is customized as per specifications provided by the customer.
