- Hi everybody, my name is Ginny Mies and I am the Senior Content Developer for TechSoup for Libraries, which is a fancy title for the person who oversees content and webinars for TechSoup’s library program. I’m also a librarian with experience in public and academic libraries.
- If you’re unfamiliar with TechSoup, we are a global nonprofit that serves other nonprofits, public libraries, foundations, and religious organizations. TechSoup’s mission is to build a dynamic bridge that enables design and implementation of technology solutions for a more equitable planet. We were founded in 1987 (and have consistently upheld a mission of social-sector capacity building. Today, we have over 200 employees, and offices in San Francisco, Warsaw, and London. We are a sustainable social enterprise with 85% earned revenue.
- The TechSoup for Libraries program grew out of a desire to specifically address the technology needs of public libraries. An important part of the program is the information developed as part of the MaintainIT Project, which was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and managed by TechSoup. The Project gathered stories from public libraries about how they support their public computers. These tips and techniques are published in "Cookbooks" and articles, available for free on our website. TechSoup for Libraries continues to gather and share stories from the field so libraries can keep learning from each other. At the end of this Powerpoint presentation, I’m going to do a live demo of the TS4L site so you can see where these Cookbooks and stories live.
- Since the launch of the TechSoup for Libraries program, we’ve saved public libraries almost 150million dollars in technology. We serve just over half of all public libraries and our goal is to serve all public libraries in the United States!
- TechSoup is most well-known for its technology donation program. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your public access computers, seeking new software, or looking for a way to keep your technology secure, we can help you make it happen. Before we dive in, I want explain admin fees. Every product donation has an admin fee – because we are a nonprofit organization, these fees help support our programs, services, and education.
- TechSoup’s bulk registration and donation tool help you get tech to all of your library‘s branches. You can register all of your branches at once and request technology in bulk. For example, we worked with the Peninsula Library System, which is located south of us in California, to get all of their libraries registered and hooked up with the Mobile Beacon Hotspots. If you’re interested in learning more about this process, please contact me after this presentation and I can put you in contact with our client services lead for bulk imports.
- Hopefully you fall into one of these categories, but if not, you can still benefit from TechSoup’s free webinars and resources, which I’ll talk about a little later in the presentation.
- The Microsoft donation program is really the hallmark for TechSoup and what we’re most well-known for. You can get donated versions of Microsoft Windows, Office, Office 365, and Windows Server for your public library. You can upgrade your public access computers to Windows 7, 8, or 10 through TechSoup for $15/license. I also wanted to mention that if your computer is already running Windows 7 or 8, you can get a free upgrade to certain editions of Windows 10 directly through Microsoft until July 29, but not the Enterprise version of Windows 10. - The Symantec donation program at TechSoup provides Symantec Enterprise andSymantec Norton products to eligible nonprofits and charities throughout the United States. You can use Symantec Enterprise products to enhance security on multiple networked computers. Symantec donations include products that can be used in small and medium as well as large enterprise environments. You can use Symantec Norton products to enhance the security and performance of individual devices that are not part of managed corporate or enterprise networks. - I also wanted to talk about TechSoup Boost (www.techsoup.org/boost), a fairly new subscription program that bundles together software and hardware. This program let’s you sample a number of programs without having to pay that admin fee. Programs included in Boost this quarter are Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements, Tableau Desktop, Tableau Training and Support, Shopify, and more. Small organizations (annual operating budgets of $500,00 or less) - $79 Midsize (more than $500,00 and less than $2mil) - $99

- I am so excited to tell you about our newest hardware offering, mobile hotspots from Mobile Beacon. As a nonprofit and one of the largest national educational broadband service (EBS) providers in the U.S., we are deeply committed to helping libraries deliver services with a combination of services and products. You can use Mobile Beacon hotspots for outreach at schools or farmer’s markets, to power your bookmobile, or to start a hotspot lending program so patrons can bring the internet home.
- Here’s the pricing structure for Mobile Beacon hotspots. Before purchasing the hotspots, you’ll want to make sure that your area has Sprint coverage.

- So let’s talk about how to get registered so you can start getting technology from TechSoup
- The sign up process is really simple. You first register as an individual – every TechSoup account has a person and an email address attached to it.
- You’ll then be asked to register your organization. Before you sign up, we recommend having your EIN Employer Identification Number or FSCS ID for your library on hand. As you go through the registration process, do not hesitate to contact TechSoup if you have questions or concerns. Our client services team is reachable by phone and by email and you’ll have that information available as you go through the process.
- Let’s talk about how to find products.
- There are a few different ways you can look for products on TechSoup.org. You can search by keyword or use our browse dropdown menu.
- When you search, you’ll not only see relevant products, but you’ll also see related articles, webinars, blog posts, forum posts, and more.
- You can also browse products by organization type, such as libraries. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, this is an excellent place to start. You’ll find the top requested products by libraries and other programs that libraries are eligible for.
- You can also search by donor partner, like Adobe for example, and see all of the products we offer donations or discounts on.
- And finally, you can browse by solution, like mobile, web design, accounting, and more.
- When you find something you’re interested in, you can click on it and you’ll be taken to the product page. Here you will find information about the admin fee, system requirements, eligibility requirements, and other important documentation. When you’re ready to buy, you simple place it in your shopping cart and check out when you’re finished shopping.
