0. Vmware on a physical ESX host, with Datastores on High Performance Storage. Running vmware servers with applications, users are using or logged in on these applications. An application server chrashes, BSOD, or other unexplainable cause, at his point a decision is often made, are we spending a lot of time on troubleshooting, or are we restoring the VM so users can continue working as soon as possible. If restoring is no longer taking hours but a few minutes, it often is decided to restore and restore to buisiness.Remove the VM from vCenter or Disk. Start an instant restore from the Veeam Backup server. This will mount a NFS Datastore to the ESX host and fool the ESX host to let it see VMDK files. The VM will start up, all of this takes less than 3 minutes! Users will be able to continue work, but the VM is running from the Veeam Backup Datastore over NFS. This is not a permanent solution and can will have a penalty on performance of the VM. To move the data to the high performance VMWareDatastores we can use Storage vMotion from VMWare, users can continue work during the transfer and full performance will be restored.
