                                                  After Tolerance

           Sad Time

                                Tolerance
As a person drinks over a period of time, he or she may develop a tolerance to
the effects of alcohol. Tolerance means a person will have to increase the
amount of alcohol consumed in order to feel the effects the individual felt when
                            they first started drinking.

Your BAC per Drink does NOT Change with Increased Tolerance
Caring for an Intoxicated Friend
DO’s: DO NOT’s:
• Stay with them at all times • Let them drive
• Reassure them • Give them food, coffee,
• Keep them warm aspirin, or other drugs
• Bacchus Maneuver • Induce vomiting
• Give them water • Let them take a cold shower
                                  • Let them “burn the booze”
                                    by exercising
Alcohol and Energy Drinks
• Both are diuretics
• Mixing the two can boost heart rate and blood
  pressure
• Mixing the two can mask a person’s level of
  intoxication
   – Increases likelihood of hangovers
   – Causes tendency to drink for longer periods of
     time
   – Contributes to higher intoxication levels
Caffeine and alcohol are a dangerous combination of a heavy
             stimulant meets a heavy depressant.
Drinking and Hooking Up
• 90% of acquaintance rapes involve alcohol
• Alcohol lowers inhibitions and may make people
more sociable, likely to flirt, engage in risky
behaviors, and do things they wouldn’t do if sober.
• Alcohol is the number one date rape drug used on
  college campuses.
• Other predatory drugs are hard to detect and mimic
  the signs of severe intoxication
• Every time you engage in sexual activity you must
  have consent.
If you are intoxicated, you cannot give consent for sex.
is a picture worth?

                  Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol Poisoning
• Vomiting without waking up
• Unconscious and unresponsive
• Fever or Chill
• Poor awareness of surroundings
• Difficulty standing or walking
• Slow or irregular breathing
• Blue Gums or fingernail beds
• Cold, bluish, or clammy skin

See any 1 of these signs? CALL 911!
Which type of drinker are you?
• Social Users: Most people who drink do so
responsibly and with little or no risk
  – No need for change
• Substance Abusers: Some people who drink
alcohol and/or use drugs do so irresponsibly
and at some risk to themselves or others
  – Change substance using attitudes and behavior
• Alcoholics: A small percentage of people who
  drink alcohol become dependent
  – Need to abstain completely
Values Assessment
• What’s Important to you?
you drink is up to you

• What are some healthy alternatives to
  drinking?
• What are some ways you can say no when
others are pressuring you to drink?
Healthy Decisions
If you choose to drink, there are a variety of things that you can do
to make sure you are drinking in a responsible manner.

• Have a plan • Designate a SOBER driver
• Sip your drink • Drink water
• Cultivate taste • Watch your drink
• Set a limit and stick to it • Stay in groups
• Measure your drinks • Know when to say no
• Eat protein • 0-1-3 Rule

  • 11. Happy Before Tolerance After Tolerance Sad Time Tolerance As a person drinks over a period of time, he or she may develop a tolerance to the effects of alcohol. Tolerance means a person will have to increase the amount of alcohol consumed in order to feel the effects the individual felt when they first started drinking. Your BAC per Drink does NOT Change with Increased Tolerance

  1. AEW PreparationPick up AEW bin from C-114. Be sure you have the marked solo cup, a blank solo cup, water, and enough magnets for each student. Return the bin to C-114 after your AEW so the GA can refill it for the next AEW.Pick up Student Folders, FERPA Forms, Workbooks, & Pre-Tests from front officeGetting startedAsk if anyone does not have their article on college drinking. If a student did not bring an article, he/she must leave and reschedule with the front office.Make sure all students have a pen with blue or black inkFERPA: have students complete FERPA Nondisclosure form, put in individual folderPRE-TEST: Have students complete Pre-Test and hold onto it. They will complete the post-test on the back AFTER AEW is complete .Be sure students fill these out in BLUE or BLACK INK.If any student folders have notes or missing information, this is a good time to have them complete it.While students are completing paperwork, call role using first names on student folders. If anyone is not present, initial on intake form that they did not attend and return folder to front office after AEW.Notes from here on are in script form. Tips and instructions are in italics.Howdy my name is ______. I work in ____. I will be your AEW facilitator tonight and in two weeks you will have a 1:1 follow up meeting with me to talk more in depth about your personal alcohol usage and decision making. Please introduce yourself and tell us why you are here tonight. (Go around the table)You can write down their names on a sticky note with a brief description of their incident (MIP, PI, Alcohol in dorm, etc.) to help you use their names during the AEW and remember their incidents for their follow ups.I’m glad you are all here. Hopefully you will learn how to avoid similar situations and make better decisions regarding alcohol in the future. Now let’s go around the circle the other way. Tell us what your article is about or something that you learned from it.Try to ask a question about or point out something important from each article.
  2. We will cover the following topics tonight:I am here to teach you, but you can learn a lot from each other. Please participate and answer questions. This will help us cover material faster, and you will likely learn more.
  3. How many of you have ever drank out of a red solo cup or known someone who has?How often did you/they measure how much alcohol went into the cup?ActivityWho would like to volunteer to pour how much ____ people usually pour for a mixed drink? (usually do a different volunteer for each drink)80 proof liquorWineMalt liquor (Smirnoff Ice, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, etc.)BeerPull out measured cup.We measured out the standard drinks onto this cup to show you the difference in what you said people usually pour and what actually constitutes one drink. You can pass them around for them to view individually or set them on the table to compare as a group.
  4. A "standard" drink is any drink that contains about 0.6 fluid ounces or 14 grams of "pure" alcohol. How many ounces of ___ do you think constitute a standard drink?Beer12 oz (about 5% pure alcohol)Wine5-6 oz (about 12% pure alcohol)80 proof liquor 1.5 oz (40% pure alcohol)This is not Bacardi 151 = 151 proof (75.5% of this shot would be pure alcohol)almost twice as strong as your standard vodka, rum, or whiskeyEverclear = 190 proof (95% of this shot would be pure alcohol)the strongest alcohol you can buyProof is equal to twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. You can use this to help you choose what to drink.Malt liquor7 oz (about 7% pure alcohol)(source: NIAAA)
  5. One glass or container is not necessarily equal to one standard drink. We do these comparisons to show you how much you are really drinking if you choose to drink these types of drinks out of these containers.Give them the drink numbers for the two beer, but have them guess on the trash can punch and long island iced tea. A few notes on trash can punch/jungle juice/party punch: People tend to get heavy handed when making punch, and students often use Everclear because it is the most bang for your buck.It is also easy to slip predatory drugs into trash can punch. We recommend avoiding it, especially if you do not know who made it.
  6. Does anyone know the definition of binge drinking? If you have one Long Island Ice Tea, unless you take over 2 hours to drink it, you are binge drinking.
  7. Does anyone know any factors that affect alcohol absorption?Let them answer and offer these details as they say them. WeightThe bigger you are, the more area the alcohol has to spread out in.SexMen have more alcohol dehydrogenase (enzyme in stomach) to break down alcohol instead of absorbing it.Men have more water weight, women have more fat. Alcohol is fat soluble so it is more easily absorbed by women.Women typically absorb about 30% more alcohol than a man of the same weight.Drinking RateThe faster you drink, the less time your body has to metabolize the alcohol, therefor you absorb more.FoodWhat should you eat before drinking?Protein! Protein and fatty foods will coat your stomach and allow for more time to metabolize alcohol rather than absorb it.MedicationMixing alcohol and other drugs can affect the way your body absorbs alcohol or the other drug and make you more impaired (multiplication effect).Carbonated BeveragesIrritate your stomach lining and make you absorb the alcohol faster.
  8. Take a look at the charts. Find your sex and your weight and calculate your approximate BAC for the day or night of your incident, or a typical night of drinking for you. Since your body processes about one drink per hour, subtract .015 from your BAC for each hour since your first drink (use the time table chart towards the bottom of the page)For example: If you are 150 lb. woman who has four drinks your BAC would be 0.135. If it’s been over 2 hours, you would subtract 0.030 from your BAC, giving you an actual BAC of 0.105.
  9. May want to point out that this is them running into something that is not moving (such as a tree, parked car, guard rail, etc.), not another car hitting them or pulling out in front of them.As you can see, even at the legal limit, you are 11 times more likely to be in a single vehicle crash. Many times the designated driver ends up being the person who says they are ok to drive at the end of the night, or the person who claims they can handle their alcohol the best, or the person who says, “I am the most sober”. ALWAYS designate a SOBER driver. If you do not have a designated driver, CARPOOL runs every Thursday-Saturday from 10-3. They will pick you up and take you home (no judgment, no cops, no university officials). They just want to be sure you get home safely. Their number is on the back of your student ID.
  10. Minor in PossessionYou can get this ticket even if you are not drinking the alcohol. If you are holding it or if it is within your vicinity of control, it is the officer’s digression whether or not to give you this ticket. Driving Under the InfluenceThis ticket is usually given to minor who are under the influence of alcohol. Texas has a zero tolerance policy for underage drinking and driving. If you are underage and have had any amount to drink, you could get this ticket if you choose to get behind the wheel.Public IntoxicationThis ticket is given to anyone who is believed to possibly be a danger to themselves or others because of alcohol consumption. You do not have to blow a .08 to receive this ticket, it is up to the officer’s discretion. Open ContainerIf there is an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, every person in the car can receive this ticket. If you are transporting an open bottle of wine to a friends house, put it in your trunk. If you don’t have a trunk, I recommend putting it in a bag that will zip closed and putting it behind the seat. Driving While IntoxicatedThis ticket is usually given to people who are over 21 and driving while intoxicated. You do not have to blow a .08 to receive this ticket. If an officer has reason to believe you are intoxicated or if you fail a Standardized Field Sobriety Test after being behind the wheel, you can get this ticket. First-time DWI convictions may be enhanced from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor if the person’s blood alcohol content is .15 or moreProviding Alcohol to a MinorYou do not have to be the one who purchased the alcohol. If you make it available to a minor, you can get this ticket. If you provide alcohol to more than one minor, you can get a ticket for each individual you supply alcohol to. If I gave alcohol to all 10 of you and all 10 of you are underage, I can receive a $4,000 fine and a year in jail for each of you, so that’s $40,000 and 10 years in jail! There are enhanced penalties for providing and/or furnishing alcohol to minors at gatherings that involve binge drinking or coerced drinking
  11. When you drink you begin to feel the positive effects of alcohol. This is shown on the upward slope of the graph, what we like to call the buzz zone. This is where we want you to be if you choose to drink. You feel a little looser, relaxed, and happy. Unfortunately because that feels good, our brain tells us to keep drinking.Once you reach a BAC of .06 you start to go down the slopeThis is where you see the negative effects of alcohol, such as crying at the bar, fighting, drunk texting, etc.Having a tolerance means your body has adjusted the way it reacts to alcohol, and you have to drink more to feel the same effects you felt when you first started drinking. When you have a tolerance, your high will not be quite as high as it was before you had a tolerance, and your low will likely be lower. It is important to know that no matter how much of a tolerance you have, your BAC per drink does not change with increased tolerance. Just because you feel fine after 3 beers, does not mean you are good to drive!
  12. What do you do for your friends when they are intoxicated?Let them answer and give details as they say the items on the list. If they are struggling to answer, try asking what myths they have heardDosStay with them at all timesIf you put them to bed and check on them every 5-10 minutes, their BAC could spike during that time. If they stop breathing during this time, what do you think would happen?Reassure themAlcohol tends to make people emotional. You want to help them calm down.Keep them warmAlcohol lowers your core body temperature. Your peripheral blood vessels dilate which moves the blood out to your skin giving you the flushed, warm feeling, but your body is actually cooling down which increases your likelihood for shock or hypothermia.Bacchus ManeuverIf you put someone to sleep, be sure they are laying in this position so that if they throw up it falls out of their mouth and they will not asphyxiate on their vomit.Recommend putting them to sleep on the floor, clumsy drunk people can fall out of beds, especially bunk beds or lofted beds.If you put a trashcan by them to throw up, be sure there is not a liner in the trashcan. Students could roll into the can and suffocated on the liner.Give them waterBe sure that they are sipping on water, but do not force them to chug water until they vomit. Alcohol is diuretic, so it does dehydrate you. Drinking water will decrease the likelihood of a hangover.Don’tsLet them driveGive them food, coffee, aspirin, or other drugsIt’s ok for them to eat if they are hungry, but don’t let them binge and eat things they would not normally eat.Coffee does not sober you up, it only wakes you up. So now you have a drunk person with very little inhibitions that you must stay with who is wide awake.Aspirin and other drugs are only going to increase the intoxication effects. Aspirin in better left for the next day only.Induce vomitingWhen your body naturally throws up, it prepares itself by coating the esophagus to prevent damage from the stomach acid. When you stick a finger down your throat, this doesn’t happen and you can severely injure your esophagus.Let them take a cold showerAlcohol lowers your body temperature. A cold shower is only going to increase that effect and may lead to hypothermia or shock.Bathrooms are where the most accidents happen in the home. If you put a clumsy drunk person in the shower, they are likely to slip and hurt themselves. There’s also the issue of sexual assault. If someone is out of it and comes to with you helping them shower, they may question why they are naked. Let them “burn the booze” by exercisingIt will not sober them up and will increases the likelihood of them injuring themselves.** The only thing that will sober you up is time.
  13. Both are diuretics so they will dehydrate you.Mixing the two will mask a person’s intoxication level because they will not feel the usual sleepy feeling alcohol gives them. This can lead to drinking longer which lead to higher intoxication levels and increased likelihood of hangovers.
  14. Every time you engage in sexual activity you must have consent, even if it is a partner you have been with before. If you’re intoxicate, you cannot legally give consent for sex. This is not something you want to be on either side of trying to prove. If you choose to drink, make decisions about what you do and do not want to do before you start Watch out for yourself. Watch out for your friends. Only go home with people you trust. If either partner is intoxicated, do not engage in sexual activity.
  15. Be careful what you put on social networking sites.People have gone through the conduct process and taken this class because a university official saw a picture of them drinking when they knew they were underage. University officials have a duty to report any illegal activity they are aware of.Potential employers are also often looking at social networking sites and may make judgments about you based on the material you have posted.
  16. Many college students think blacking out is not a big deal, that it is something that just happens when you drink, but blacking out is actually a really serious consequence of drinking. When you black out, you have drank so much that your brain is shutting down things that it does not need. Making memories is not as vital as breathing for you life, so your brain shuts this function down.Browning out is a less severe from of a blackout where you may remember being at the bar and remember being home, but not remember the car ride between the two.Blacking out can be very danger because:You will appear to be awake and conscious. People are not going to know you are blacked out, you won’t be walking around with your eyes closed, so they may think you are fine. You have an increased potential for driving while intoxicated and making other risky decisions with no memory of the event.
  17. Does anyone know any signs of alcohol poisoning?Let them answer and add details as they list them They usually miss one or two. Explain those when they stop throwing out ideas.Vomiting without waking upUnconscious and unresponsiveTwo easy ways to tell the difference between unconscious and asleep are by pinching them on the inside of the upper arm or rubbing their sternum with your fist. Both of these are painful enough to wake up a groggy person.Fever or ChillPoor awareness of surroundingsPeople should always be able to tell you who they are, where they are/live, what they are doing, their phone number, etc. If they give you some odd off the wall answer, although it might be funny, they likely have alcohol poisoning.Difficulty standing or walkingAn intoxicated person may be a little clumsy, but a person with alcohol poisoning is the person who has to be carried between two people across north gate or the person you stand up off the couch and they immediately crumple back downSlow or irregular breathingLess than 8 breaths per minute is a good guideBlue Gums or fingernail bedsUsually really blue, this is a very severe sign of alcohol poisoning (don’t wait to just see this one)Cold, bluish, or clammy skinClammy=cold but damp (like when someone is sweating off a feverThis is not a checklist! If you see any one of these signs, you need to call 911 to get them some helpSome students will say that they do not want to call 911 because they do not want to get in trouble for underage drinking. 1) I would rather get a ticket and pay a fine than my friend die because I was too afraid to call to get them some help2) Immunity from alcohol related charges is provided to minors who seek emergency medical help.  Immunity can be granted to the first person who requested emergency medical assistance in response to the possible alcohol overdose and who is on the scene and cooperated with medical assistance and law enforcement
  18. Although we have different types of drinkers in college, most students choose to drink in a responsible manner. Take a moment to read the definitions on the page, choose which drinker profile you identify with, and read how you can help make yourself a more responsible drinker.Give students time to read the definitions:Social Users:Do not experience any problems associated with drinking.Never look or feel out of control with their drinking.Never get complaints about how much they drink because there is nothing to complain about.Substance Abusers:Experience negative consequences associated with alcohol use, but alter the way they drink to avoid recurrence of problems.Get complaints about their behavior and sometimes feel embarrassed or remorseful about things they say or do when drinking. Use alcohol to medicate/celebrate feelings and/or change the way they feel about some aspects of their lives and/or themselves. AlcoholicsDrink for any reason or excuse or no reason at all.Experience negative consequences associated with drinking but continue to drink in a way that permits recurrence of problems.Promise themselves and/or others that they will drink or use in moderation but break those promises.Get complaints about their drinking but tend to resent, discount, and/or disregard those commentsHow can you help yourself?Social Drinkers:Are fine; they need to change nothing (except perhaps drink and/or use within the limits of the law).Substance Abusers:May not need to completely abstain from alcohol, but they do need to change their substance using attitudes and behavior.Successfully changing behavior oftentimes means that they must deal with the problems and issues that make them want to change the way they feel. Examples of the kinds of problems, issues, and situations that encourage one to abuse alcohol and drugs include depression & anxiety, anger & resentment, insecurity, low self esteem, immaturity, and peer pressure. Alcoholics:Need to abstain completely from all addictive and potentially addictive mood and mind-altering substances, and they will need professional help and/or peer support to accomplish this goal. Individuals, including adolescents and young adults, who become addicted to alcohol and/or drugs will be unable to manage and control their drinking and drug use, at least in the long term. Unfortunately, alcoholics tend to maintain strong denial, which decreases their chances for genuine insight regarding their situation and their need to change.Does anyone want to share what they identify with and why?Often times we see that students are usually social users, but occasional dabble in substance abuse.Medicating and celebrating tests or breakups can put students into nights that they take things a little to far.
  19. What are some healthy alternatives to drinking?Let them list a few things and make some comments. The two big ones to listen for and prompt them to say are Studying : You are students and that is why you are at A&MJoining an organization: There are over 800 student organizations at A&MPLUG Responsible Aggie Decisions (RAD): We have one dedicated to raising awareness about responsible decisions about alcoholWe hand out water on North Gate to encourage people to stay hydrated and slow down their drinking rateWe give presentations and put on other educational programsThey can join! Apps on our website, business cards in the AEW bin. What are some ways you can say no when others are pressuring you to drink? It is ok to lie to get people off your backSome ideas are: I’m the DDI have a test tomorrowI’m on medicationI don’t drinkCarry around a soda or water in a red cup. Most people who are drinking will not know if you’re drinking alcohol or not and won’t be testing your drink to see.
  20. What are some healthy decisions you can make if you choose to drink?Let them throw out some and add details. Explain the ones they miss when they finish throwing out ideas. Have a planYou don’t have to have every minute of your night planned out, but at least know where you’re going and when, who is going with you, and how you are getting home.Sip your drinkCultivate tasteQuality over quantitySet a limit and stick to it!Only bring a set amount of cash with you to the barMeasure your drinksEat proteinBefore you drink to coat your stomach and slow down you alcohol absorptionDesignate a SOBER driverDrink water Alternate between alcoholic drinks and waterWatch your drinkThis applies to guys and girls! They may want to sexually assault you or they may want something you have (wallet, keys, girl you are with)If you leave your drink, just get a new one. If someone slips something in it, it is not going to change the taste, color, or texture. They will likely squeeze in a few drops form an eyedropper. If someone is buying you a drink, go with them to the bar, and take the drink directly from the bartender.Stay in groupsStudents come to this class with PIs all the time because their friends left them alone and they decided to walk home from North Gate. Go with your friends, drink with your friends, and go home with your friends. Know when to say no0-1-3 Rule0 if you’re driving1 per hour3 in a nightThis will keep your BAC at a healthy level and make sure you are never binge drinking.Have each student write down at least one strategy they will use to make healthy decisions in the future. Then have them go around the circle and share.
  21. You will need to complete a homework assignment before your follow up meeting:Complete e-TAP assessmentType up answers to all questions on front and back of homework assignmentFill out the attached chart tracking your drinking for 14 days. Don’t worry, I am the only one who will be reading it. MUST FULLY COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT AND BRING IT TO THE AEW FOLLOW UP. Failure to do so will result in rescheduling and a waste of both our time.Any questions on the homework? Now we will do the Post-Test on the back of the Pre-Test.You must use blue or black ink to complete these. Please be sure to mark your answer in the bubbles and boxes clearly. Have students take the post-test while you are still in the room to observe. Collect the tests. Place in bin in ADEP C-118.Give students Alcohol Poisoning Signs magnet Make follow-up appointments Each student needs to schedule a 30 minute, one-on-one meeting with you.Give each student your business card and have them write down their appointment time/date.
