Glossary
shapes
Traditional: Greek, Roman, rectangular, or kidney shape
Geometric: A combination of straight lines, angles, and/or radius curves.
Freeform: A combination of non-geometric curves and/or straight lines.
speCIal feaTURes
Vanishing Edge: A water feature detail in which water flows off the edge of at least one pool wall and is collected in a catch basin.
Water Feature: Non-bathing entity such as fountains, waterfalls, or atriums, used for aesthetic purposes.
Automatic Covers: A solid reinforced power cover, usually made of vinyl, which runs on tracks and can be operated by a key or electronically controlled by an electric
motor. The cover provides safety, debris protection, and heat/chemical/water retention.
maTeRIals
Concrete: A dry mixture of cement and sand mixed with water and applied to the pool’s rough shape, using a specific method (gunite, shotcrete, etc).
Vinyl: An interior pool finish featuring a vinyl liner which is draped over a sand, cement, or steel floor, and locked into the top of the pools wall.
Fiberglass: A one-piece fiberglass shell manufactured in a factory and installed in an excavated pool site.
Natural: Projects incorporating organic wood, desert, mountain, or rock materials, as well as natural water and/or landscape features.
Artificial: Projects constructed of man-made products, fabricated to resemble natural wood, desert, mountain, or rock materials.

Interior Pools: Projects enclosed in a permanent structure permitting year-round use.
Renovations: Installations that have undergone cosmetic changes, accessory add-ons, or modernizations.
Technical/Engineering Achievement: Projects constructed under unusual circumstances requiring unique technical/engineering expertise.
Outdoor Great Rooms: A residential outdoor kitchen, living area, or pool house.
Concrete Spas: A permanently installed unit with hydromassage jets, constructed out of concrete and may or may not be attached to a pool.

Competition Pools: Swimming pools constructed specifically for swim meets, board and/or platform diving, water polo games, synchronized swimming,
and/or other competitions.
Recreation/Leisure Pools: Swimming pools constructed specifically for leisure and recreation, including hotels, resorts, and community pools.

Water Parks: An amusement park featuring water play areas such as wave action pools, waterslides, lazy rivers, and surf pools.
