Pocahontas’s Background<br />Pocahontas was a nickname given to her because of her spirited behavior.<br />Her formal names were Matoaka and Amonute.<br />She had an encounter with John Smith in May of 1607.<br /> Her father (Chief Powhatan) was the leader of all the tribes in the tidewater region of Virginia. She was his favorite daughter.<br />

Her Associated Colony<br />Jamestown was her colony in Virginia.<br /> Pocahontas contributed significantly to the early survival of the Jamestown colony.<br />Her untimely death cut short her successful mediation between the Powhatan Indians and the colony. <br />

Her Beliefs<br />She wanted peace with her tribe and the English colonists.<br />

Her Contributions<br />Pocahontas&apos;s contributions to Jamestown date from her early acquaintance with Capt. John Smith after his capture by Powhatan&apos;s men in 1607. <br />Her legendary rescue of the English captain on the verge of his execution was probably part of a traditional Indian adoption ceremony (misinterpreted or misunderstood by Smith), though it is possible that without her intercession he would have been killed. <br />

How it effects Americans today<br />It effected us in a great way.<br />If Pocahontas hadn’t made peace with her tribe and the English Colonists, we wouldn’t of gotten Jamestown and it wouldn’t of became a part of Virginia and Virginia wouldn’t of became a colony. <br />
