This petition for Writ of Mandate/Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief was filed in September, 2022 by local Orange County shelter reform advocates, including Elizabeth Hueg, SAFE Rescue Team, and Cats in Need of Human Care. The action seeks to compel OCAC to open the shelter to the public to facilitate animal adoptions, rather than requiring potential adopters to call and make a specific appointment to see a particular animal advertised on the shelter website. It also alleges that animals are kept in substandard conditions, and that the shelter doesn't adequately work with animal rescuers. It also seeks to mandate that the shelter accept stray cats for adoption and owner redemption, and to renew hosting spay/neither clinics. It demands the shelter stop euthanizing tiny, motherless kittens, which the shelter allegedly puts to sleep rather than invest the labor required to feed them. Neither Sharon Logan nor Paw Protectors are involved in the action, nor was she invited to participate. In fact, Logan outed and ridiculed one of the declarants who filed an evidentiary declaration, as a Jane Doe, in support of the lawsuit.
