2. Before I could begin making my magazine, I needed to research and analyse who my
audience would be in order to target my magazine towards them. I did this by creating a
survey and asking them to answer questions about themselves. From this information, I was
able to build my magazine around them, and create the kind of magazine that they would
want to read.
Age
In my survey, I found that my target age range was
15-18 years olds by an overwhelming majority. I
therefore needed to ensure that my magazine was
created with this in mind. I included all younger
artists, who would resonate with a younger
audience better than an older audience, and
better than older artists would. The young
audience can see themselves in the younger
artists, and will feel a stronger bond with them .
I feel like the audience that my magazine would reach is the same as my
intended target audience for this reason. I think that the magazine would
successfully reach a younger audience. However, I do think that the
magazine would reach an older audience too, which was not intended, as it
is a more professional style than magazines usually aimed towards young
people, like Kerrang, and therefore may appeal to older readers too, which
would widen my audience past where I intended it to.
3. Gender
I intended to have a more gender neutral magazine, as I
received a high response from both males and females, and
didn’t want to alienate anyone due to gender. My main way of
doing this was to have a gender neutral colour scheme and
include both male and female artists, so that both genders
can see themselves being represented. I think that the
magazine successfully reaches this audience, as I feel like the
magazine does include multiple artists of each gender.
However, after analysing my contents page, I feel there is a
slight imbalance of male and female artists included, and that
I could improve this by having a more equal number of each.
Nevertheless, I feel like my magazine definitely reaches the
intended audience, and therefore the audience of my
magazine would be varied in gender.
Total named male artists included: 5
Total named female artists included: 3
Some of the artists are band names,
and therefore can include both
genders.
4. Social class
I used question 4 to determine the social class for
my magazine. Most responses said that people
were willing to pay between £2 and £4 for a
magazine. However, all of the choices got high
responses apart from £5.01+ suggesting that my
audience was made up of people from working to
middle class. I therefore included things for all class
groups. I made the price in the middle of my main
responses at £3.50, included artists wearing both
branded and unbranded outfits, and included a
competition for those of a lower class to have a chance to win a prize. By balancing all of
these aspects, I feel like the magazine appeals to a very wide amount of social class groups.
However, as the price is a little higher than some of the responses wanted, I think that my
magazine would include less of the working class, as they would be less willing to pay a high
price for a magazine.
Overall, I feel like my reader profile is the same now as it was before. I think that I have
managed to appeal to the same people as I intended to through the different aspects that I
have chosen to include in my magazine. Therefore my audience consists of;
- Both males and females
- Those ages 15-18
- Those in social class groups B-D
