Protection Benefit.
Income Protection Benefit pays out a monthly
amount and is meant to help you pay bills and
cover other living expenses when you cannot
earn the bucks.

The good news is that this is one of the most
affordable insurance policies. So, even if your
boss doesn’t yet pay you what you know you
are worth you can afford to secure your future
against a situation where you are unable to earn
a monthly income.
WHEN DOES IT KICK IN?
Keep in mind that Income Protection Benefit also
pays out when you are unable to generate an
income for a short period and not only for when
you are permanently unable to do so.
Your Income Protection Benefit policy will stipulate
the conditions under which you are able to claim
and you need to understand this before signing
on the dotted line. Most people at some stage are
unable to earn an income for a short period, (a
few weeks or months), and an Income Protection
Benefit policy will make provision for this.
If you become permanently unable to earn an
income, your Income Protection Benefit policy
will pay until retirement or death.
WHAT TO CONSIDER
BENEFIT AMOUNT
The maximum benefit amount you can choose on
Income Protection Benefit is 75% of your before
tax income.
You can however choose to increase your benefit
amount annually by a percentage.
With Income Protection Benefit you can also
stipulate that the benefit amount keeps on
increasing even while you are receiving payouts
due to a claim.
This is to ensure that your income keeps up with
inflation if you are dependant on payouts for a
long period.
PREMIUM PATTERN
A premium pattern could make it even more
affordable for you to take out Income Protection
Benefit right now, but discuss this with your agent
to make sure you understand the pros and cons.
If you opt for this your starting premium gets
reduced below what you should be paying,
making it more affordable to start off with, and
then increased annually over the life of the policy
by the premium pattern percentage.
You should however guard against a situation
where your Income protection becomes
unaffordable later in life due to an aggressive
premium pattern.
WAITING PERIODS
When taking out an Income Protection Benefit
policy you will have to choose a waiting period.
This is the time between the claim event and when
you are eligible to put in a claim.
Example, if you choose a waiting period of 3
months, you would have to wait 3 months after
the claim event before you become eligible for
Income Protection Benefit payouts.
The longer waiting period you choose, the
cheaper the premium.
PREMIUM GUARANTEE
A premium guarantee on your Income Protection
Benefit policy means that your premium cannot
be increased during that time over and above the
premium pattern and benefit growth you chose.
