Learning fromtimothy
1. 2 Tim 1 : 1-18
Ibadah GP GPIB Gibeon Rumbai
13 Oct 2012
2. • Who is Timothy ?
• Keep the flame blazing - (ay 1-7)
• Don’t be ashamed, be yourself (as Christian) –
(ay 8-12)
• Guard the good deposit – (ay 13 -18)
3. • One of apostle Paul’s child in the spirit of faith.
Paul was in Rome prison by that time
• A young man (as you) with a great responsibility
for ministry
• Son of a mother (who a believer) and a greek
father (who is not a believer – Act 16:1)
• Tell us about: suffering, courage, perseverance,
confidence in Christ, guarding the truth, passing
on the faith, etc.
• But today we will learn 3 important items from
Timothy’s experience
4. • Ay 1 &2 : Life in Christ is not only for eternity but also here and now.
• Ay 3,5:
– Follow God with clear conscience,
– godly family is strong factor to passing on faith.
– How about you? What can we do?
• Ay 6:
– Work to keep the “fire” going all of the time. It is an ongoing task.
– A fire needs fuel and a fire needs oxygen. Word of God as fuel and dependence on the Holy
Spirit as oxygen.
– Look after each other in fellowship. Learn from “camp fire” – together the fire is bigger, less &
disconnect will “die”
• Ay 7:
– God spirit in you give : power, love, self discipline NOT timidity (ketakutan – lack of
confidence)
– Only God made you able to serve Him. He will equip you as you learn, but on the other hand
you might be smart but it’s not enough to spread his word. This is the caveat.
• Applicability:
– Keep up the fellowship, be together for positive activities, choose right community, passing
gospel to others thru your life
5. • Ay 8: “Do not be ashamed”, and “Join with me in suffering”
– We show that we are embarrassed of Christ when we:
• hope no one will think we are Christians
• decide not to speak up for what is right
• are silent about our relationship with God
• blend into society (though it clearly wrong society)
• accept our culture’s non-Christian values
– By contrast, we testify about him when we:
• live moral, upright, Christ honoring lives
• look for opportunities to share our faith with others
• help others in need
• take a stand for justice [and not just on the socially acceptable issues]
• love others
• acknowledge our loyalty to Christ
• use our lives and resources to carry out his desires rather than our own
– Follow Christ is not always easy (but He promised he’s there with you) – (Yoh 15: 18-20)
• Ay 9: His sovereign choice, for His own reason. It is by grace not by us.
• Ay 12: I Know Whom I Have Believed.
– Christianity is personal trust and a personal relationship
• Applicability : Be yourself in Christ – Live on what you say day by day
6. • Ay 13:
– Paul is telling Timothy that it is important for the truth to be passed on
without being changed.
– With faith and love in Christ Jesus. We need to trust Jesus and love
Jesus enough to do this
• Ay 14:
– Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you.” The word “guard”
means to “guard, watch, and defend.
– If something has been entrusted to you, it means that you have a
responsibility to guard it.
– Learn to say “NO” for a bad things. In many times, it’s not easy !!
• Ay 15 – 18: Who is your best friend ?
• Applicability: Keep anything God has been put in you to work on: on
study, on ministry, on the family, etc
7. • Keep the flame blazing
• Don’t be ashamed, be yourself (as Christian) –
• Guard the good deposit
• ….. Happy Birthday for ABED ……
• Jesus blessed you all
