1 Read the text. When was the original Globe
Theatre open?
a) 1599-1613
b) 1613-1642
c) 1599-1642
ln 1599, a group of men, including William
Shakespeare, decided to build a new theatre in
Southwark, near the River Thames. They called
it The Globe. Three thousand people watched
plays in the theatre. The rich ones sat in seats.
Others in the audience paid one penny and
stood in front of the stage.
There was no lighting so plays took place in
the afternoon. There were no microphones so
the actors shouted their lines. The actors wo
costumes and there were other things they
could use. Things like cannons ...
Unfortunately, in 1613, while the actors were
performing HenryVlll, they fired the cannon and
it started a fire in the roof. They opened a new
Globe Theatre the next year but, in 1642, the
government closed all theatres and that was
the end of The Globe - until 1997 when the new
Globe Theatre opened in almost the same place.
