The document describes Grow Marion, a nonprofit organization seeking to legalize alcohol sales in restaurants seating at least 50 people in Marion, KY. The purpose is to educate people about alcohol policy through a pragmatic campaign. Volunteering opportunities are available to gain experience in political and social organizing. The program being developed uses Nationbuilder, Canvasser, and Facebook seamlessly to organize the campaign and drive traffic to digital materials. It addresses issues like driving online traffic, uses paid Facebook ads, and imports voter data to identify supporters.
2. 1. Describe the history, purpose, and career opportunities involved with the organization
you are working with.
The organization that I am working with is Grow Marion. Grow Marion is a wet/dry
campaign based in the city limits of Marion, Ky. It seeks to bring limited alcohol sales to
restaurants seating at least 50 people. It started from a research project 3 years ago and
grew as the research on the topic grew. I spent time polling the community the campaign
took place in to understand how much, where, and when by the answers community
members gave me and research of blue laws so I could make it the most fitting campaign
as possible.
The Purpose of Grow Marion is also to educate people about alcohol policy. Not all
alcohol policies are will yield the same result. We want to bring alcohol into the city of Marion
in a safe, slow, and pragmatic way.
The only career opportunities involved with the organization are volunteering jobs. But
volunteering jobs are a great way to build a resume. We encourage new comers to political and
social organizing to volunteer with our organization so they can gain experience.
2. Name and describe the program you are developing and how it fits in with the
organization described.
3. I am a student in both 580 and 501. My 580 project dealt with the canvassers themselves.
The 501 project paper deals with the technical aspects of building a campaign so all of
the social interactions that go through the campaign can be used seamlessly and help
other leaders in the organization take on communication roles that help build the
organization.
The main tools that are used in this organization is Nationbuilder, Canvasser, and
Facebook. The goal of this campaign is to use all of them seamlessly for all aspects of the
campaign. By keeping it paperless not only are we better organized, but we are also eco-
friendly.
3. Describe issues, developmental stages, competencies, and values addressed through your
program (chapter 4 text)
Driving traffic to the website and Facebook page would be issue number one. Such a
large segment of the voting block uses social media that it is the best way to get free
publicity. When people like and share statuses they share it to their friends in their
network through the applications newsfeed.
Not all of the Facebook advertising is free though. We also have spent money in paid
advertising. When we pay for advertising it is shown as an ad in their newsfeed and as an
4. ad in the sides of their Facebook page. Using Facebook analytics, I set up the page where
we only have to pay Facebook when someone clicks our advertisement and goes to our
website.
Importing voter file data and census information is a development stage of the campaign.
The more data we collect about people the more ways we can contact them and know
what to contact them about. To accomplish this I used the organizing platform
Nationbuilder who partners with a date mining firm. For an extra $500 I am given all the
information on registered and unregistered voters down to what credit cards they use or
what magazines they are subscribed for. With this information I can put people into
different categories.
The is expanded upon when I use a voter algorithm that predicts the probability that the
individual is going to turn out to vote. If the voter has a low percentage chance of
showing up to vote, then your money may be wasted by trying to campaign to that
individual. That is why this is a crucial developmental stage because it sets up how much
money can be saved in the long run.
Personal/social competence would also be directly correlated to an online campaign. In
an effort to make our website and Facebook page a more seamless experience. People can
5. make a vote pledge on our website, by clicking yes the campaign logo will appear on
their Facebook page and encourage others to do the same.
4. List the program planning steps in detail on the program planning worksheet- Chapter 5-
Text 2 (Appendix A).
Program planning steps were first spent by doing focus groups so I could write a message
and carefully hone it. The data sets were gathered, data mining was purchased. The urls
were purchased, then the nationbuilder software and other information was imported.
Finally, we added canvasser to link all of the technology to work together in unison.
Develop specific risk management plans- Chapter 7, text 2 (Appendix B).
The risk management portion of Grow Marion still stays all online. It can be incredibly
troublesome to keep creating new content so we use this responsibility to different
6. volunteers. Two of our volunteers have a background in graphic design and do
professional work for us for free. This helps lift the burden off of me and puts
experienced artist volunteering for the cause.
Develop a PSA and a flyer Chapter 5, Text 2 (Appendix C).
7. Create a pre/post test and a final evaluation- Chapter 5, Text 2 (Appendix D). Include a
summary of your evaluation on Appendix A, (See Chapter 5 Text 2 for example). You
have to administer the final evaluation but not the pre/post test, just design it.
In order to help us determine various changes that might have occurred during the Grow
Marion campaign, we would like you to complete the following Pre/Post Test. Be certain that
8. your Pre-Test number correlates with your Post- Test number and thank you for participating in
the survey and the program.
Indicate the number that reflects your response to each *statement based on the following scale.
Pre/Post Test
1. You were assigned different supporters to follow, did you keep tabs with them? 12345
2. Was the tool canvasser easy to navigate or do you prefer a paper route? 12345

In order to help us evaluate the Grow Marion campaign and plan for future programs, we
would like you to complete the following survey. The survey is anonymous and no one
will know the results of your responses. When you have completed the survey turn it in.

11. I think that I reflect a lot of these different personality qualities. I do see myself being
a social personality in a lot of ways… but in others even though I scored low in in it I
am very artistic also. What I like doing is finding creative and artistic ways to get the
message out in a social way. I can think of no better way of this than art.
