CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the problem


Nowadays, the advances in technology, economy, and a
cultural globalization have made English language one of
the main subjects in Costa Rica´s national education system.
According to Garnier, Ministry of Education of the current
government of Costa Rica, expresses that,

“in the era of globalization the world has diluted its
frontiers, generating a major integration and
independence among many different cultures,
costumes and languages. This conduces Costa
Rica to confront diverse challenges, and one of
them is the development of the linguistics
competences.” (Garnier,2008).
Achievements.
 Student´s interest, easy activities
 Opportunity to explain their opinions
 Motivated to participate
 Aware to importance of the English
 Necessity of developing reading skills
 English teachers are interested to know
more about how to introduce new
strategies

Limitations
 Discouragement of the students
 Lack of skills about reading comprehension
 Photocopies and equipment
 Students are shy and feel embarrassed


To motivate the students in the usage of effective
tools that will develop skills to understand the
English readings to obtain better results in the final
national tests.



To examine the process of reading comprehension
and the instruction to get effectiveness of it, at Liceo
Nocturno de Desamparados.



National level
The chart shows the results obtained in the national tests (Bachillerato) 2008. It is
classified by subject and the percentage of promotion. This chart describes the three
subjects where the students presented more difficulties in the national tests (2008).
According to this chart, mathematics is the subject that presented the highest amount of
students who failed the tests. In the second place, Biology with (3469) students who
failed the tests, and finally in the third place, the English subject with (3439) students
who failed the national standardized tests.

This study is a descriptive investigation
in which its main objective is to identify if
the strategies applied in class by the
teacher will increase the students’
comprehension of texts and to identify
through this descriptive investigation the
attitudes that students of eleventh grade
present when they apply Effective
Reading Strategies that facilitate the
comprehension of English texts.
“A descriptive research, describes data, attitudes,
and characteristic about a phenomenon being
study”

 For

Jones (1979) the descriptive
research studies the relationship
among the non manipulated
variables only. The investigation
selects the relevant variables from
the event or conditions that already
exist at present and analyze their
relationship.

TECHNICAL PROPOSAL FOR READING IN ENGLISH, DIRECTED TO THE STUDENT SECTION 11-1, LICEO NOCTURNO DE DESAMPARADOS

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the problem  Nowadays, the advances in technology, economy, and a cultural globalization have made English language one of the main subjects in Costa Rica´s national education system. According to Garnier, Ministry of Education of the current government of Costa Rica, expresses that, “in the era of globalization the world has diluted its frontiers, generating a major integration and independence among many different cultures, costumes and languages. This conduces Costa Rica to confront diverse challenges, and one of them is the development of the linguistics competences.” (Garnier,2008).

  • 12. The chart shows the results obtained in the national tests (Bachillerato) 2008. It is classified by subject and the percentage of promotion. This chart describes the three subjects where the students presented more difficulties in the national tests (2008). According to this chart, mathematics is the subject that presented the highest amount of students who failed the tests. In the second place, Biology with (3469) students who failed the tests, and finally in the third place, the English subject with (3439) students who failed the national standardized tests.

DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY  This study is a descriptive investigation in which its main objective is to identify if the strategies applied in class by the teacher will increase the students’ comprehension of texts and to identify through this descriptive investigation the attitudes that students of eleventh grade present when they apply Effective Reading Strategies that facilitate the comprehension of English texts.
  • 22. “A descriptive research, describes data, attitudes, and characteristic about a phenomenon being study”  For Jones (1979) the descriptive research studies the relationship among the non manipulated variables only. The investigation selects the relevant variables from the event or conditions that already exist at present and analyze their relationship.
