What is time Management? • Time management is the conscious ways we spend our time. “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities” – Stephen Covey (Author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) • We identify priorities • We make informed choices • Start by identifying what we do each day?

Four Quadrants of Time Necessity Important, Urgent • • • • Crisis Medical Emergencies Pressing Problems Deadline-driven projects • Last minute prep for scheduled activities Quality and Personal Leadership Important, Not Urgent • Preparation and Planning • Prevention • Values Clarification • Exercise • True recreation Deception • When you push studying to the last minute – then it became necessity, not quality and personal leadership. • You may not recognize things as deception, but it is what is deterring you from your goals. Waste Not Important, Urgent Not Important, Not Urgent • Interruptions/Phone Calls • Some mail/reports • Some meetings • Some "pressing matters" • • • • • • Busy Work Junk Mail Some emails Time Wasters Escape activities Mindless TV shows
  4. Planning Weekly Planning Long Term Planning Enter assignments, exams and quizzes on their due dates in your planner or calendar Make a schedule for each week, include appointments and homework Daily Planning Make a daily to do list, if you don’t get it done, put it on tomorrows.
  5. Using a Planner • • • • • Develop a consistent system Begin early – input everything that has a due date Include personal things like bills, vacations, etc. Stay organized Set a schedule, and then try to stick to it one week at a time • Make weekly, and daily to do lists

Using Technology to Plan • • • • • Digital calendars work too Set it to remind you via email or push notification Check back often, make updates as necessary Remove from your list when you complete it Make reminders for when you will be actually doing the task • Check out your options – Apps, online calendars etc.
  7. How Do I Take Control of My Time? • • • • • • • Make goals for your study time Plan your semester Keep a schedule Learn to say no Turn distractions into rewards Watch your time: Late is Late Break Assignments into smaller pieces
  8. Effective Studying • For every 1 hour in class spend 2 hours studying • Figure out – Where do you study best? – When do you study best? • Take breaks to retain more. • Take advantage of free time.

  10. What motivates you? • Motivation is a force, thought, or attitude that propels you toward a desired goal. This can be external or internal, positive or negative, destructive or constructive. It all depends on how you decide to utilize it. • • • • Think Big Picture Set Goals Be Active Make “Me” Time
  11. Set goals to stay on track • Having goals helps us make a plan • Our goals need to be something we can achieve • We need to celebrate our accomplishments when we achieve a goal

Beating Procrastination • First you have to know why? – What are you avoiding? – What do you tell yourself when you chose to procrastinate? – What are you choosing to do instead of the work? – What are your goals? What motivates you? • Procrastination is a choice • Nobody does their best work under pressure
