Finding what you need with YorSearch
#UoYTips

Welcome to
YorSearch.
This is a quick guide to finding the
resources you need to study, using
YorSearch, the library catalogue. After
you’ve read this you’ll be able to:
- find books, journals, and articles
- log in to your library account
- request books that are out on loan
- renew your items
…and more.

You can go to the Help Desk on the ground floor of the Morrell where
we’ll be happy to give you some tips and advice. You can also use the
Chat service within YorSearch to get help wherever you are.
We’re here to help.

You can find
YorSearch anywhere.
There are catalogue PCs in several
places around the Library which run
YorSearch. Or you can go to
yorsearch.york.ac.uk from anywhere
in the world you have an internet
connection. It works on desktop or
mobile devices and works well for
screen-readers and assistive
software.

resources. If you just
want to find a book
or a journal, click All
items to limit your
results to one type

To find

key words.

options to refine your results.
For example you can limit
your search to just items in
the Library right now, or just
to items you can read online,
or just to newspaper articles.

If the item is available, find it on the shelf and
borrow it using the Self-Issue Machines in the
Library. You do not need to request items that
are available: you can just borrow them.
The request option is there for available items
because we have a Book Delivery Service. This
can bring books from King’s Manor Library to
the Morrell, and books from the Morrell to King’s
Manor. If you request an available item it will
automatically get it delivered to the other site,
so only do this if you this if the book you need is
not at your preferred site.

In order to
request the
book we
need to log
in (if we
haven’t
already).

After
logging in,
the Place a
request or a
booking
button
appears.
When you
click this it
will result in
the book
being
returned
sooner by its
current
borrower;
you’ll then
get an email
telling you
it’s ready to
collect.

Now that you’re logged in, you can click on My Library Card and access your
list of current loans (where you can also renew your items), your requests,
Interlending items you’ve ordered, and any fines or fees you’ve accrued.

You can save / favourite items in YorSearch to easily find them later using
the little pin icon shown here. Access your Saved items and Search history
from the same drop-down menu once you’re logged in.

If you want articles,
just type in your
keywords. E.g.
Grönroos, C. (1994), "From

Note that there’s a
118,000 results – if
we want to be
more specific we
can Phrase Search
by putting our
search terms in
quotation marks

This forces
YorSearch to only
look for that exact
phrase, and now
brings back 39
results instead of
100,000+.

As you do more
independent
research you may
come across
resources you
need which we
don’t already have
in the Library. If
so, go to the Can’t
Find What You
Need? page to
request them.

To obtain an
item the Library
doesn’t have…
For Books For Articles
If you find a
book you need
that we don’t
have, you can
use the
Purchase
Request Form
to ask for it.
You’ll get an
email when it
arrives.
If you find an
article you
need from a
journal we
don’t subscribe
to, you can
request it via
Interlending.
If we can get it,
we’ll email you
the PDF.

Finally,
remember
there is more
than one way
to get into our
resources.
YorSearch is brilliant for keyword searching but
keep in mind other ways to find what you need.
Each method has different strengths and you’ll use
different ways in at different times.
Every Department has a Subject Guide which is a
curated set of journals and databases, grouped for
that particular subject.
The E-resources Guide allows you to search by
category of resource, for example to see all our
newspaper collections in one place.
Browzine allows you to browse tables of contents
of journals and read new issues.
