  3. 1. HARD GELATIN CAPSULES :- • The hard gelatin capsule consists of two pieces in the form of cylinders closed at one end. • The shorter piece is called the cap. This cap fits over the open end of longer piece called body. • Hard gelatin capsules are also known as dry-filled capsules or two piece capsules. • This capsules are used in extemporaneous compounding of Rx. 28 March 2023 SNJB's SSDJ College of Pharmacy, Chandwad (Nasik) 3

  7. •ADVANTAGES OF HGC :- 28 March 2023 SNJB's SSDJ College of Pharmacy, Chandwad (Nasik) 7 1. Capsules are tasteless, odorless. 2. Combination of powders we can use. 3. They are attractive in appearance. 4. They can be filled quickly and conveniently. 5. They are economical. 6. They are easy to handle and carry. 7. Easy to swallow. 8. Physician can change the dose and combination of drug according to patient requirement.
  8. • DISADVANTAGE OF HGC :- 1. Capsules are not suitable for liquids that dissolve gelatin, such as aqueous or hydro alcoholic solutions. 2. The concentrated solutions which require previous dilution are unsuitable for capsules because if administered as such lead to irritation into stomach. 3. Not useful for efflorescent or deliquescent materials. 4. Efflorescent cause capsules to soften & Deliquescent may dry the capsule shell to brittleness. 5. SOFT GELATIN CAPSULE :- • Soft Gelatin capsules are one piece, hermetically sealed, soft gelatin shells containing a liquid, a suspension, or a semisolid. • Soft gelatin is mainly composed of gelatin, plasticizers, preservative, colouring and opacifying agents, flavoring agents and sugars. 28 March 2023 SNJB's SSDJ College of Pharmacy, Chandwad (Nasik) 9

Small to large sizes possible. 5. Elegance 6. Portability 7. Odour & taste masking 8. Ready availability of drug hence gives fast action.

  14. • APPLICATIONS OF SGC :- 1. Wate immisable, volatile & non-volatile liq. such as vegetable & aromatic oils,aromatic & aliphatic hydrocarbon , Chlorinated hydrocarbon, ether, ester, alcohol. 2. Water miscible non volatile liq. Such as polyethylene glycol, nonionic surface active agent as poly sorbate 80. 3. Water miscible & relatively non vol.Compounds 4.
