LGBT Center Commemorates World AIDS Day
The Hudson Valley LGBT Center plans full day of events in commemoration of
World AIDS day.
Kingston (New York) – Every December 1st, the world comes together for World
AIDS day. It is a day that was created to accomplish many things. Not only does it allow
the world to remember those lost to AIDS and HIV, but it also seeks to make everyone
aware of measures they should take to protect themselves and ways they can help get rid
of the virus in places where it is rampant. Experts state that more than 25 million lives
have been lost since the first case was reported and 33.4 million people are currently
living with HIV or AIDS and according to the World Health Organization (WHO) “most
people living with HIV or at risk for HIV do not have access to prevention, care, and
treatment, and there is still no cure.” This December 1st, the Hudson Valley LGBT Center
will commemorate World AIDS day with a full day of events planned. From 3 to 5 pm
the center will be offering free HIV testing and support. Then from 5:30 to 6:15 AIDS
Memorial Quilt, stories from those affected by HIV will be hosted at the center. This will
be followed shortly by a candlelight walk in remembrance and support of those lost and
battling the virus, ending with a community gathering with live music and food. The
center expects a great turnout and hope that this will be helpful to the community. One
person even stated, “This event is very important, especially for the young people in the
community who should take advantage of the free testing and support that is being
offered.”
