5G (5th generation wireless systems) denotes the next major phase of mobile
telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G/IMT-Advanced standards.

“In LTE you can get a wrong command every
minute,” said Wen Tong, chief technical
officer at Huawei Wireless. “That is tolerable
for people accessing the Internet, but for
braking and acceleration it could be fatal.”
Mr. Tong is in charge of the Chinese
company’s $600-million 5G development
program. In 2014 Huawei was named an
official partner of Audi for tele-
communications and connected car
technology. Huawei is also jointly researching
5G with BMW.
The promise of 5G, with one IP-based infrastructure, is not only that it
will relieve data traffic congestion on mobile broadband networks but
that with a thousand-fold increase in capacity it could enable the full
realization of the Internet of Things
Automotive Use Cases for 5G
 V2X
 Support for fully automated driving
 Collection and mining ample quantities of car data:
 Location of pedestrians and bicycles
 Hazardous road conditions
 Traffic
 Diagnostics
 Parking places
 Accidents
 Map updates
 Entertainment
 Linking cars with interconnected transportation system
 Faster over-the-air updates
Will 5G compete with DSRC for V2X Applications?
Many of the applications planned for V2X, such as electronic
brake warning, intersection collision warning, traffic jam
ahead warning and in-vehicle signage, could be implemented
within a 5G network rather than a DSRC (dedicated short-
range communications).
Tentative European Timetable for 5G
Major equipment makers such as Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei have recently
been publicizing their visions of what the fifth generation of wireless mobile
networks should be.
