LIPIDS
 Lipids: (Greek: lipos, means fat or lard)
 These are heterogeneous class of naturally occurring organic substances.
 They have a distinguished functional group or structural features.
 They are insoluble in water and highly soluble in one or more of the solvents:
ether, chloroform, benzene and acetone. This property sets them apart from
proteins, carbohydrates,, nucleic acids and other biomolecules.
 These are widely distributed in the biological world.
 They play a wide variety of roles in plant and animal tissues.
Introduction:
Definition:
A group of organic molecules that includes fats,
oils, and waxes, that do not dissolve in water but
dissolve in organic solvents are known as Lipids.
Classification:
Lipids are broadly Classified into 5
types. They are
1. Simple Lipids – Ex: Fats and Oils,
Waxes
2. Complex Lipids – Ex: Phospholipids,
Glycolipids, Lipoproteins
3. Derived Lipids – Ex: Hydrocarbons,
Steroid Hormones, Ketone bodies
4. Neutral Lipids – Ex: Mono, di,
triacylglycerols
5. Miscellaneous Lipids – Ex:
Carotenoids, Squalene

Types of Lipids:
There are three main types of Lipids:
 Triglycerides: These are the main form of lipids in the body and in foods. More
than 95 percent of lipids in the diet are in the form of triglycerides, some
having a visible presence and some hidden in foods.
 Phospholipids: These are found both in plants and animals but make up only
about 2% of dietary lipids. They also play many important roles in body and
foods. They can be synthesized by body and no need to consume in diet.
 Sterols: They have a very different structure from triglycerides and
phospholipids. Most sterols do not contain any fatty acids. They are complex
molecules that contain interlinking rings of carbon atoms, with side chains of
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen attached. Cholesterol is the best-known sterol
because of its role in heart disease.
Industrial Usage:
 Pharmaceutical companies produce highly beneficial, lipid-containing
drug products.
 Lipids are also added to certain drugs to enhance their delivery.
 These lipid-based drug carriers offer benefits like increased half-life,
improved absorption, and the ability to target a specific area of the
body with the drug.
 Lipids are used in the cosmetics industry for the production of various
skin care and beauty products, such as lotions and creams.
 Cosmetics and skincare manufacturers add lipids to the formulations
of their products for skin moisturization, protection, repair and for
aesthetic benefits including smoother, more radiant skin with an
overall improved appearance.
Advantages:
 Lipids exist in a variety of foods and play a significant role in your diet.
 They're synthesized or stored to support the cells and assist in essential
processes.
 Lipids also have many external uses.
Disadvantages:
 Excessive accumulation in the blood can put you at a high risk for the
development of liver disease and cardiovascular (heart) disease.
 Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States
and across global causes of death.
 A buildup of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). can cause atherosclerosis.
Which can lead to a stroke or heart attack.
Thank You
