Synopsis
In This Project, I Have Learned About How Furniture Came In Existence How Different Time Periods Have Different
Furniture Like For Example, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Etc. I Have Also Studied About The Classification Of Furniture
And Their Characteristics. After Their Study I Have Learned How To Make A Furniture Ergonomically Sound Keeping
In Mind The Other Factors. This Made Me Clear The Basic Level And Then I Moved On To How The Furniture Is
Constructed I.E. Engineering Design Of Furniture, Their Designing And Cost Analysis And Also How To Eliminate The
Errors In Furniture. I Have Also Studied About The Furniture Joints And Also Which Joint Will Be Suitable For Which
Furniture. It Is Also Important To Pay Attention To The Assemblage, Sub Assemblage And Elements Of Furniture.
The Technical Documentation Is Also Very Important, Their Types And Contents Too. In This Project I Have
Considered Them In My Design. This Project Has Been Completed Under The Guidance Of Miss Divya Sharma. I Am
Very Thankful To Dezyne E’ Cole College.
Commercial Interior Design Deals With Designing The Public Spaces Such As Office Buildings, Museums, Hotels,
Stores, Warehouses, Community Centres, Libraries Etc. We Usually Interact With Commercial Spaces Everyday, Say
It From Studying For A Test At The Library Or Stopping At A Fast Food Restaurant For A Quick Lunch. Perhaps We
Sometime Visit A Shopping Centre Or Join A Friend At A Health Club. Designing Commercial Interior Involves
Designing The Interior Of Any Facility That Serves Business Purposes. Facilities That Fall Under The Category Of
Commercial Interior Design Includes Business That Invites The Public In.
The Design Of Commercial Interior Is Complex And Challenging.
Commercial Interior Design Requires A Thorough Understanding Of An Organization's :-
-- Workspace Culture
-- Branding
-- Work Practices
-- Contact With The Public
Introduction-Commercial Design
In Commercial Design The Designer Has To Create
An Environment That Includes Aesthetics And
Functions To Make It A Successful Hit.
Here The Interior Designers Work Includes
Selecting Paint Colors, Choosing The Artwork,
Accounting For Acoustics And Lighting, Selecting
Appropriate Furniture, And Placing All These
Together In The Most Appropriate Manner.
Commercial Interior Designer Will Involve Much
More Than Decorating. It Will Include The Choice
Of Building Materials, The Placement Of Interior
Walls, Plumbing And Power Systems, Coordinating
Communication Etc..
This Level Of Interior Designer Requires To Have
The Solid Working Knowledge Of Architecture As
Well As Sense For Creating Functional And
Attractive Settings With The Space
Introduction-Product Design
Product Design Involves A Broad Approach To The Designing And Making Of Innovative / New Products. This
Subject Is Aimed At Those Interested In The Way Business And Industry Identifies Potential Products And
Successfully Designs And Manufactures Them. It Is Not For Those Who Intend To Design And Manufacture An Item
That Already Exists. However, You Can Take An Existing Product And Improve It Or Develop An Entirely New
Product.
Product Design Is Concerned Primarily With The Relationship Between Products, Systems And Those Who Use
Them. The Product Design Programme At NID Inculcates User-centric Approach And Processes. Responsibility And
Concern Towards The Social, Physical And Ecological Environments Is Emphasized In The Process Of Developing
Innovative Ideas. The Product Design Programme Assimilates Inputs In Diverse Domains Such As Human Factors,
Cognitive Ergonomics, Form Studies, Studio Skills, Advanced Cad, Research Methods, Design Management,
Materials & Manufacturing Processes & Social Sciences. Emphasis Is On Process Centric Approach Which Shapes A
Student’s Education Through Participation And Teamwork. Design Projects Form The Core Of A Product Designer’s
Education, With Gradual Increase In Level Of Complexity And Cover Broad Areas That Product Designers Are Likely
To Encounter In Their Professional Careers.
Students Are Actively Encouraged To Participate In Collaborative Projects With Industrial Houses, Social Sector,
Government & Mncs Design Projects Can Be Broadly Classified Into Domains Of:
• Design For Industry: Explores Creative Opportunities For Partnerships With Small, Medium And Large Scale
Industries Across India To Develop Core Competencies In Design And Manufacturing For A Globalized Presence.
Projects Focus On Products And Services For Consumer Needs, Manufacturing And Economic Impact.
• Design For Quality Of Life: Explores Unique Social And Cultural Responses To Existing And Emerging
Technologies As Reflected In The Creation And Adoption Of Everyday Objects Of Life. Projects Focus On Design
And Development Of Products And Services That Improve The Quality Of Living In Home, Office And Public
Environments.
• Design For Healthcare: Explores A Growing Movement Among Designers To Design Cost-effective Healthcare
Solutions For People Who Have No / Limited Access To Institutionalized Healthcare. Projects Leverage The Power
Of Design Thinking To Find Unique Ways To Address The Basic Challenges Of Health, Survival And Progress Faced
By Underserved Populations In The Indian Context.
• Design For Sustainability: Explores The Power
Of Design To Influence An Ecologically
Responsible Approach To Development Of
Products, Systems And Environments. Designers
Evolve New Systems Of Development Which
Improve The Quality Of Life And The Human
Experience, While Simultaneously Restoring The
Environment, Rebuilding The Community And
Creating A Sense Of Oneness With The Natural
World.
• Design For Social Impact: Explores The Role Of
Design-led Solutions At The National Level To
The Infrastructural Challenges Of A Rapidly
Growing Indian Economy. Projects Look At
Developing Scalable Solutions To Problems Of
Urban Mobility, Sustenance And Social Equity
That Are People-centric And Embrace
Sustainable Values.
Furniture Design
At The Dawn Of Human Civilization, When The Concept Of Furniture Was Not Yet Known, Man, Driven Only By The
Need To Make Life Easier, In A Natural Way Used Various Objects Made Spontaneously By Nature. A Trunk Of A
Tree Felled By The Wind Or Rock Served As A Place To Sit, A Flat Stone Block Served As A Base For Performing A
Variety Of Common Work, And Soft Moss Of Woolen Skins Served As A Bed. Over The Years, The Creative Activity
Of Humans, Artefacts Began To Be Made Which Replaced The Spontaneously Made Objects Mentioned Earlier.
Over The Centuries, Due To Preferences Of Societies That Lived In A Given Age, Their Forms Changed. New Types
Of Furniture Were Created That Fulfilled Specific Functions: To Sit, To Lie Down, For Work, For Dining, Storage And
For Others. Generally, The Remaining Furniture Constructions From The First Dynasty Of Ancient Egypt Are
Accepted As The Beginning Of The History Of Furniture. Meanwhile, There Is Much Evidence To Suggest That
Furniture Was Manufactured And Used By Humans In The Late Paleolithic And Early Neolithic Period.
Historically, The Most Commonly Used Material For Manufacturing Furniture Was Wood. Archaeological Finds,
However, Indicate That In Steppe And Permafrost Terrains, Stone, Metal And Animal Bones Were Also Used. Now,
The Modern Designers Paid Attention To A Comprehensive Approach To Designing , Meeting Both The
Requirements Concerning A Satisfactory Appearance, As Well As The Necessary Functions. History Of Furniture
Had Different Time Periods Which Have Different Unique Features In Each. People Moved From Intricate To Simple
Designs.
Furniture Design-Office Furniture
Designing Office Space Requires Attention To The Proper Arrangement Of Individual And Group Workstations.
Firstly, The Availability Of The Workstation Must Be Taken Into Account, I.E. The Possibility Of Free Access Of
Workers To Workstations. Office Space Is A Social And Group Space; Therefore, It Needs To Be Remembered That
The Adaptation Of Workstations In An Office Was Conducive To Proper Cooperation Between Design Teams And
Members Of The Teams. Depending On The Purpose, Office Furniture Is Designed For Individual Office Work ,
Construction And Designing Works, The Work Of Groups And Problem Teams, Call Centre, Training Tasks ,
Conferences, Individual And Collective Customer Service. Due To Different Purposes, Each Of The Types Of
Furniture Is Characterized By Different Design Solutions Which Ensure Mobility Or Stability, Variability Of Geometry
And Dimensions, Sufficient Stiffness, Stability And Strength.
When Designing Office Furniture, It Is Assumed That The Workstation Should Be Adjusted In Terms Of Space
To The Dimensions Of 90% Of The Adult Population Of Both Women And Men. The Minimum Dimensions Assumed
Are Those Which Are Not Achieved By 5% Of The Population, While Maximum Dimensions Are Those Which 95%
Of The Population Does Not Exceed. Office Furniture Should Be Dimensioned In Accordance With The Provisions Of
PN-EN 527-1:2004, PN-EN 1335-1:2004.
Modern Office Furniture Has A Very Complex Design And Is Equipped With Electromechanical Devices That
Facilitate The Use Of The Furniture And Optimal Use Of Office Space. Mobility, That Is A Group Of Construction
Characteristics Conducive To Easy Movement, Is Currently The Key Advantage Of Office Furniture. Some Safety
Measures Are Also Taken Up While Designing Office Furniture Like The Corners Or Edges Should Not Cause
Cutting, Physical Injury Etc. It Should Be Stable And Durable . It Is Worth Noting That By Acceding To Designing
Office Furniture And Office Space, One Should Be Aware That Individual Elements Of The Equipment Of A
Workstation Should Provide The Possibility Of Free And Easy Arrangement Of Office Space, So That The Office Does
Not Limit Employees And The Company In Realizing Business Tasks.
Case Study
You Are Supposed To Design An Executive Desk For The Manager Of An Office. You Are Supposed To Solve The Case
Study Following A Concept, The Important Points To Be Considered In Office Furniture Design And The Design
Should Be According To His Post.

  • 11. Furniture Design At The Dawn Of Human Civilization, When The Concept Of Furniture Was Not Yet Known, Man, Driven Only By The Need To Make Life Easier, In A Natural Way Used Various Objects Made Spontaneously By Nature. A Trunk Of A Tree Felled By The Wind Or Rock Served As A Place To Sit, A Flat Stone Block Served As A Base For Performing A Variety Of Common Work, And Soft Moss Of Woolen Skins Served As A Bed. Over The Years, The Creative Activity Of Humans, Artefacts Began To Be Made Which Replaced The Spontaneously Made Objects Mentioned Earlier. Over The Centuries, Due To Preferences Of Societies That Lived In A Given Age, Their Forms Changed. New Types Of Furniture Were Created That Fulfilled Specific Functions: To Sit, To Lie Down, For Work, For Dining, Storage And For Others. Generally, The Remaining Furniture Constructions From The First Dynasty Of Ancient Egypt Are Accepted As The Beginning Of The History Of Furniture. Meanwhile, There Is Much Evidence To Suggest That Furniture Was Manufactured And Used By Humans In The Late Paleolithic And Early Neolithic Period. Historically, The Most Commonly Used Material For Manufacturing Furniture Was Wood. Archaeological Finds, However, Indicate That In Steppe And Permafrost Terrains, Stone, Metal And Animal Bones Were Also Used. Now, The Modern Designers Paid Attention To A Comprehensive Approach To Designing , Meeting Both The Requirements Concerning A Satisfactory Appearance, As Well As The Necessary Functions. History Of Furniture Had Different Time Periods Which Have Different Unique Features In Each. People Moved From Intricate To Simple Designs.
  • 12. Furniture Design-Office Furniture Designing Office Space Requires Attention To The Proper Arrangement Of Individual And Group Workstations. Firstly, The Availability Of The Workstation Must Be Taken Into Account, I.E. The Possibility Of Free Access Of Workers To Workstations. Office Space Is A Social And Group Space; Therefore, It Needs To Be Remembered That The Adaptation Of Workstations In An Office Was Conducive To Proper Cooperation Between Design Teams And Members Of The Teams. Depending On The Purpose, Office Furniture Is Designed For Individual Office Work , Construction And Designing Works, The Work Of Groups And Problem Teams, Call Centre, Training Tasks , Conferences, Individual And Collective Customer Service. Due To Different Purposes, Each Of The Types Of Furniture Is Characterized By Different Design Solutions Which Ensure Mobility Or Stability, Variability Of Geometry And Dimensions, Sufficient Stiffness, Stability And Strength. When Designing Office Furniture, It Is Assumed That The Workstation Should Be Adjusted In Terms Of Space To The Dimensions Of 90% Of The Adult Population Of Both Women And Men. The Minimum Dimensions Assumed Are Those Which Are Not Achieved By 5% Of The Population, While Maximum Dimensions Are Those Which 95% Of The Population Does Not Exceed. Office Furniture Should Be Dimensioned In Accordance With The Provisions Of PN-EN 527-1:2004, PN-EN 1335-1:2004.
  • 13. Modern Office Furniture Has A Very Complex Design And Is Equipped With Electromechanical Devices That Facilitate The Use Of The Furniture And Optimal Use Of Office Space. Mobility, That Is A Group Of Construction Characteristics Conducive To Easy Movement, Is Currently The Key Advantage Of Office Furniture. Some Safety Measures Are Also Taken Up While Designing Office Furniture Like The Corners Or Edges Should Not Cause Cutting, Physical Injury Etc. It Should Be Stable And Durable . It Is Worth Noting That By Acceding To Designing Office Furniture And Office Space, One Should Be Aware That Individual Elements Of The Equipment Of A Workstation Should Provide The Possibility Of Free And Easy Arrangement Of Office Space, So That The Office Does Not Limit Employees And The Company In Realizing Business Tasks.
