8. Introduction
Interior Design Is The Art And Science Of Enhancing The Interior ,
Sometimes Including The Exterior, Of A Space Or Building , To
Achieve A Healthier And More Aesthetically Pleasing Environment
For The End User.
An Interior Designer Is Someone Who Plans , Researches ,
Coordinates And Manage Such Projects . Interior Design Is A
Multifaceted Profession That Includes Conceptual Development ,
Space Planning, Site Inspection, Programming Research
Communication With The Stakeholders Of A Project Construction
Managements , And Execution Of The Design.
Interior Designer ,Implies That There Is More Of An Emphasis On
Planning , Functional Design And The Effective Use Of Space , As
Compared To Interior Decorator An Interior Designer Can
Undertake Projects That Includes Arranging The Basic Layout Of
Spaces Within A Building As Well As Projects That Require An
Understanding Of Technical Issues Such As Window And Door
Positioning , Acoustics And Lighting . Although An Interior Designer
May Create The Layout Of A Space , They May Not Alter Load
Bearing Walls Without Having Their Designs Stamped For Approval
Often Work Directly With Architects , Engineers And Contractors .
Interior Designer Must Be Highly Skilled In Order To Create Interior
Environment That Are Function , Safe , And Adhere To Building
Codes ,Regulation And Requirements . They Selection Of Colours
Palettes And Furnishings And Apply Their Knowledge Ton The
Developments Of Construction Documents , Occupancy Loads ,
Healthcare Regulation And Sustainability Design Principle , As Well
As The Managements And Coordinates Of Professional Services
Including Mechanical , Electrical Plumbing And Life Safety – All To
Ensure That People Can Live , Learn Or Work In An Innocuous
Environment That Is Also Aesthetically Pleasing .
10. Introduction
Residential Design Is The Design Of The Interior Of The Interior Of
Private Residences, As This Type Design Is Very Specific For
Individual Situations, The Needs And Wants Of The Individual Are
Paramount In This Area Of Interior Design. The Interior Designer
May Work On The Project From The Initial Planning Stage Of May
Work On The Remodeling Of An Existing Structure. It Is Often A
Very Involved Process That Takes Months To Fine-tune And Create A
Space With The Vision Of The Client.
Residential Interior Design And Livability
Residential Interior Designers Coordinate The Interiors Of Homes,
Which Means That Their Job Is Very Different. Interior Design Is
Always A Matter Of Balancing Aesthetic And Function, So We Need
To Consider The Primary Function Of A Residence: It’s A Place
Where People Live. Therefore, A Residential Designer’s Primary
Focus Is Creating A Livable Space.
This Means That Residential Designs Needs To Be Comfortable And
Useable. Residential Needs Tend To Be Focused On Smaller Groups
And Relaxed Atmospheres Then You’d Find In A Commercial
Building, And The Interior Designers Needs To Ensure That The
Colors, Lighting, Furniture, Appliances, Temperature, And General
Layout Meet These Needs.
Designers And Architects
Since Residential Interior Design Is Focused On Livability, Designers
And Architects Must Work Closely Together. Occasionally, The
Architect Will Take Charge Of Interior Design (Frank Lloyd Wright
Was Famous For Doing This), But More Frequently The Architect
Works Closely With A Designer Whose Sole Job Is Planning The
Interior Aesthetic. In Fact, A Single Residence May Utilize Multiple
Designers Who Each Specialize In One Area Of Living The Kitchen,
The Bedrooms, Offices, Etc.
11. Division Of Space
The Balance Of Private And Public Spaces Means That Interior
Designers Need To Know How To Divide Space Within A Residence.
This Is Often Done With Architectural Features Like Walls And
Windows, But Just As Frequently Is A Matter Of Aesthetic Design.
Imagine A House With A Central Kitchen That Opens Into A Dining
Room, A Living Room And A Foyer Without Adding Additional
Architectural Features, We Can Completely Change The
Relationship Between These Spaces.
In Terms Of Architecture, However, There Are A Few Major Things
That The Designer Will Often Add Of Change To The Architect’s
Plan. Does The Designer Envision A More Open Interior Feel? Then
They May Suggest Removing Nonessential Walls And Adding More
Windows For Natural Lighting. Does The Designer Want A More
Intimate Feel? Lower Ceilings, Fewer Windows, And Tighter Spaces
May Do The Trick. The Designer’s Job Is To Manage Architectural
Features So As To Ensure The Appropriate Balance Of Private Versus
Public Space. All Residence Require Both. Public Spaces, Like
Bedrooms, Tend To Be More Intimate And Enclosed. Interior
Designers Work With Architects To Ensure That The Physical
Building Balances Needs Of Living.
12. Construction Studies - I
In This We Get Knowledge on Different Structural Systems,
Different Types of Doors And Windows, Stairs, How to Construct
Wall, Floor, Stone And Brick Masonry.

BED ROOM
The dos of
Rug size & placement
For a spacious room . Choose a rug
large enough to hold the bed ,
provide extra width for walking on
either side AND at the end of this
bed ideally , it should go under all
furniture .
Rug size to consider: 9’X12’ for
king , 8’X10’ for queen
A slightly smaller
room that comes
just below the
nightstand is also a
“Do” .
Rug sizes to
consider : 8’X10’
Don’t use a smaller
rug around the foot of
the bed. That looks
like a postage stamp,
and way out of scale.
You want softness
under your feet when
you get out of bed.
Rug sizes to avoid :
5’X8’
Another smart solution is using two small rugs
on either side of the bed. This works
particularly well if you have a dresser or desk
on one side of your bed instead of a
nightstand.
Rug size to consider: 4’X6’,3’X5’
For a bedroom with a bed in
the corner, or in a room with
two twin bds. Choose a runner
for along the sides of the bed –
it works great.
Rug size to consider: 2’6X7’

Lighting Size & Placement
Guide
HOW LARGE SHOULD YOUR FIXTURE BE?
When large should your fixture, the primary factor to consider is THE AVAILABLE SPACE.
IN THE CENTER OF A ROOM OVER A TABLE
Measure the length and width of the
room and add those numbers together.
To achieve a balanced look in the
room, the diameter of your fixture
should be one-twelfth of that size.
The diameter of your fixture
should be 12 inches less than
the width of the table, to
avoid bumping heads.

LIGHTING
WHERE AND HOW HIGH SHOULD IT GO?
Not only will proper placement of your light fixture enhance the room
decor. It will allow maximum illumination of the room. The ideal location
for your fixture varies slightly according to the room it will occupy.
OVER THE DINING TABLE IN THE HALLWAY
Allow 28-32 inches of space between the
table surface and the lighting fixture.
The key is to keep the lighting in
one’s line or sight. Hallways with
higher ceilings should utilize a
lower- hanging light fixture. There
should be at least 7 feet clearance
between the floor and lighting
fixture.

ABOVE THE KITCHEN ISLAND IN THE STAIRWELL
Lighting over a kitchen island is imperative for
safety (in food preparation) as well as
aesthetics. A contemporary trends is to install a
trio of pendants over the island.
Fixtures should be placed 72 inches above the
floor or 28-34 inches above the countertop.
Lighting fixtures should be high enough so that
occupants of the area won’t have to stare
directly into the lights.
Clearance between the bottom of the
fixture and height of the tallest
occupant should be 18-24 inches.

IN THE BATHROOM
A popular choice for bathroom
lighting is sconces traditionally placed
on both sides of the mirror. A more
recent twist is to use pendants in much
the same way sconces. Since these
fixture will be used as task lighting for
daily grooming purposes rather then
ambient lighting, they should be
placed at eye level-at least 60’’ off the
floor and spaced at least 28’’ apart.
Generally, sconces and pendants are
not the only source of light.
AT THE FOYER
The optimal height for a foyer
chandelier is a minimum of 80-84’’
from the floor to the bottom of the
chandelier. If the foyer is two stones
high. The fixture should hang no lower
than the point of the second floor. If
there is a window above the two story
foyer. You should center the chandelier
in the window so you can see it from
the outside.

184. Anthropometrics
It is to make a building architecturally designed, the link
between the person, space and activity is necessary. Interior
designing is all about the space and person without the
knowledge of human dimension, no design can be made or

according to the human dimensions.
