RELIGION IN KERALA:
FESTIVALS IN KERALA
ONAM:
▪ Largest festival in the state of Kerala.
▪ The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements
of Kerala’s culture and tradition.
▪ The most impressive part of the Onam Celebration is the
grand feast called “Onasadhya”.
▪ The festival banishes all the barriers of castes and religion,
because in the empire of King Mahabali, people live in unison
and prosperity.
▪ It is said that truth is the only religion followed by people,
who belong to the empire of King Mahabali.
VISHU:
▪ It infuses in the mind of all Keralitis feelings of common legacy and
brotherhood.
▪ It is the day when sun transits from Pisces to Aries. According to
Indian astrological calculations, and represents the vernal equinox.
▪ "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". It falls on 14th April. It is day of
equinox.
▪ On Vishu day, both day and night are of equal duration.
▪ The most important ritual followed on the Vishu day is called
‘Vishukani, which has much deeper meaning than we generally
understand. The Malayalam word kani literally means "that which is
seen first", so "Vishukani" means "that which is seen first on Vishu"
POORAM FESTIVAL:
• This festival is a mix of music, elephants,
colours, fireworks and devotion.
• The most striking feature of the Thrissur
Pooram is its very secular nature. Both the
Muslim and Christian communities actively
participate in the festival and they also play a
very dominant role in the very conduct of the
festival
