• Elaborative interrogation - being able to explain a point or fact -
MODERATE
• Self-explanation - how a problem was solved -MODERATE
• Summarising - writing summaries of texts - LOW
• Highlighting/underlining - LOW
• Keyword mnemonics - choosing a word to associate with information
- LOW
• Imagery - forming mental pictures while reading or listening - LOW
• Re-reading - LOW
• Practice testing - Self-testing to check knowledge - especially using
flash cards - HIGH
• Distributed practice - spreading out study over time - HIGH
• Interleaved practice - switching between different kinds of
problems - MODERATE
TASK:FlashCards
• Create your own flash cards for the topic of your choice –
Create a card with a single word on it, you will test each other
verbally to see if you can fully explain the word. On the
reverse you can write bullet points to help…
• Harvey – Pg. 12
• Jenner – Pg. 22
• Great Plague -
VACCINATION
TASK:SpiderDiagram
• Create a Spider Diagram of a topic of your choice – Put your
topic in the centre and have information coming from each
leg. Think about factors involved.
• Harvey – Pg. 12
• Jenner – Pg. 22
• Great Plague -
Jenner
TASK:ExamQuestion.
• Plan an answer for a 9 mark Question for ONE of the
following. Identify what the Question is asking you, is it
talking about treatment or knowledge? Use the Mark Scheme
and your own notes to help you plan an answer.
• January 2011 – Explain the importance of the individuals
work. Edward Jenner and vaccination.
• June 2010 – Explain why it had such a limited impact on
medical treatment at the time. – William Harvey’s discovery
of the circulation of the blood in the seventeenth century.
MarkScheme
Q1. January 2011 – Explain the importance of the individuals work. Edward Jenner and vaccination.
4-6 marks
He made an important change that was a breakthrough in medicine, Jenner’s work was important in
preventing disease; Describes reactions & attitudes towards Jenner.
7-9 marks - Analysis of importance.
Jenner found a way to prevent the spread of smallpox – a major killer; Jenner received cash from
parliament & international recognition; vaccination against smallpox made compulsory; Jenner’s
importance was limited because his vaccination only worked for smallpox;

Harvey’s discovery of the circulation of the blood in the seventeenth century.
4-6 marks.
Eg Harvey’s discovery had little effect on the way physicians treated illness; description of the details
discovered by Harvey.
7-9 marks – Analysis of importance.
Eg since understanding of disease was based on faulty theories, Harvey’s improved understanding of
physiology had little relevance to treatment. Answer about inhibiting factors, eg reluctance to accept
new ideas.
TASK:QQT/Find-the-Fiction.
• Create a Quiz Quiz Trade Cards of a topic of your choice –
This is a Quiz, write down a question on the front and an
answer on the back. Ask your table your questions and Swap
cards!
• Create a Find-the-Fiction card – Write down TWO false
statements and ONE truthful statement about a topic. Ask
your table your statement once you are done!
• Harvey – Pg. 12
• Jenner – Pg. 22
• Great Plague -
TASK:FlowCharts
Create flow charts for the following.
