Welcome, introduction of speakers
Today’s program:
Short introduction on TU/e and Eindhoven in general
Information about TU/e graduate school, application, admission
- Time for questions on the chat
Guidelines/text suggestions:Before telling you about the Master’s degree programs we would like to give you a short outline about Eindhoven and Eindhoven University of Technology.
As you can see on the map, Eindhoven is situated in the south of the Netherlands +/- 1,5 hours away from Amsterdam
Eindhoven has its own Airport which makes it very easy to visit other countries
@Aishwarya, Please share your own experiences: why did you come to Eindhoven and TU/e?
Guidelines/text suggestions:
The city also has a central position in Europe; from Eindhoven you can easily travel to other European countries like Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, England etc.
Eindhoven is part of the Brainport region: one of Europe’s most innovative regions and home of many prominent high-tech companies.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
According to Forbes Magazine, Eindhoven is even one of the most innovative places in the world.
After graduation it’s relatively easy to find a job here (Many jobs in the region; shortage on engineers. The demand is almost double the supply)
Students of TU/e normally find a job within 3 months after graduation.
Guidelines/text suggestions:Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a top-ranking Dutch university specializing in engineering science & technology. We want to contribute to:
science for society: (solving the major societal issues and boosting prosperity and welfare by focusing on the Strategic Areas of Energy, Health and Smart Mobility)
science for industry: (the development of technological innovation in cooperation with industry)
science for science: (progress in engineering sciences through excellence in key research cores and innovation in education)
Guidelines/text suggestions:We offer high quality research and education in an international environment. Do you want to visit our campus from a distance? Take a look at our 3D tour via: www.tue.nl/virtualvisit.
@Aishwarya: Please share your own experiences. What do you think of TU/e so far? Do you enjoy studying here? What do you like about it?
Guidelines/text suggestions:
STORM: in august last year a student team consisting of 22 students of all degree programs of TU/e set off for a 80-day World Tour on the first electrical motor that can handle long distances. The motor – which they designed themselves and which they called STORM - has an operating range of at least 380 kilometers. This is more than twice as much as most other electric motors, which are mainly developed for racing or for urban traffic.
A number of students is participating in an international competition with their research in synthetic biology: they combine proteins that normally do not occur naturally in the human body and that can cause reactions such as the death of the cell. This can be very meaningful for various types of therapies for when cells are not doing what they are supposed to.
Stella Lux. That is the name of the ‘energy-positive family car’ with which Solar Team Eindhoven finished first in the Cruiser category during the World Solar Challenge in Australia in October 2015.
TU/e has opened the world’s first drone café during the three-day festival in honor of its 60th anniversary in April 2016. Several drones took and served orders in this pop-up café. It was a great success! The café was the initiative of the TU/e student team Blue Jay, a team of 15 students of various TU/e degree programs.
TU/e student team ‘Tech United’ has already clinched three world titles and seven European titles with their soccer robots. Last year, their care-providing robots AMIGO and SERGIO won the German Open. This year, they won the European Open.
Excellent Education
We see it as our duty to train engineers to possess a sound scientific basis and scientific depth. But they also need to have the necessary skills to successfully flourish in social sectors and functions.
All education after the bachelor phase is organized to American / international example: the TU/e Graduate School. Abroad, this is a familiar concept. Our master’s programs are grouped into research domains = graduate programs. A graduate program consists of one or more Master programs with the possibility to continue with a PDEng (Technological Designer) or PhD program.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
As you can see on this slide a PDEng program takes 2 years and a PhD program takes 4 years after your master’s program. Both types of programs offer you the chance to specialize within a research discipline along with the freedom to decide on your research project and how you want to flesh it out.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
The focus of PDEng and PhD is different:
PhD focus on doing research
PDEng focus on designing an innovative product (or process) for industry
Do you want to know more about these programs? After this webinar there’s a webinar about both programs (starts at 17hrs). You can still subscribe! If you’re not able to attend the webinar live, you will receive the recorded version afterwards.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
Back to our graduate programs…
We have 15 graduate programs each focused on a specific field of research.
Within a graduate program you choose a master.
We offer 23 master’s degree programs and 11 special master’s tracks. The difference between programs and special tracks is in their formal status. The relatively new special tracks have not yet been recognized by the government as independent programs. If you graduate in one of these special Master's tracks, you will receive the diploma of the corresponding recognized Master's program.
At www.tue.nl/graduateprograms you can explore all your options.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
On this slide you can see an overview of all graduate programs. As said, each graduate program contains one or more master’s programs.
Do you want to know more about a specific master’s program? In November 2016 each TU/e master’s program organized a free webinar. You can watch the recordings via www.tue.nl/webinars. During each webinar more detailed information about a program was presented by our staff and students.
Guidelines/text suggestions:
I would like to highlight the characteristics of our master’s degree programs (120 EC) because they can really help you shape your own future:
Differentation and individual choice: During your Master’s program you are in charge of your own professional and academic development. You choose an individual study program that matches your interest and ambitions
But the TU/e graduate school offers more than an education:
Coaching As student of a Master’s program you have a mentor. The main goal of your mentor is to get you the best possible start of your career. Your mentor can suggest challenging courses, introduce you to people in research departments and companies, and help you determine career goals.
Skills Lab/Career Center The TU/e SkillsLab and Career Center supports you with the development of your professional skills in several ways, both online and offline. For example they organizes various events and workshops on different professional skills.
Alumni Coach Network The Alumni Coach network brings TU/e students, young professionals and experienced alumni together. You get the opportunity to talk about your ambitions with experts from the field and learn from their career challenges. Experienced alumni, from all TU/e departments, are willing to share their professional insights and experiences with you. They can help you shape your own future.
Honors programs for excellent students a honors program can consist of an externship, course(s) at PhD level, national or international summer schools, existing internal or external Honors programs or NWO-recognized Graduate School programs. Strong attention for personal leadership
Guidelines/text suggestions:
The general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs for students with a Bachelor’s degree from a university outside the Netherlands are:
A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
First Class degree).
Sufficient mastery of the English language (more info on website)
There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
