Using Innovative Technology to Improve Medication Adherence

• £9,370,000,000 spent on Prescriptions
• £13,062,000,000 spent on Long Term Care of which 52% spent on over 65
• 31.1% of the Population is over 60 years of age, worsening trajectory
• 15,000,000 People with Long Term Conditions: 70% of all Health & Social Care
Expenditure
• Between 30 and 50% of prescribed medicines are not taken as recommended.
Implications:
o Up to £4,685,000,000 of medication is potentially ‘not accounted for’
o Worse Outcomes for almost 50% of people with LT Conditions
o Higher Cost to NHS England
o Social Care Costs Increase
The Numbers for England
Problem being addressed
• 1 billion prescriptions dispensed in England have an NIC of £9.37 bn
(Circa 8-10% of whole NHS Budget)
o How many of these were taken?
o How did they improve outcomes?
o How do we KNOW?
• Non-adherence increases burden to NHS
• There is no statistically robust data that informs the debate on medication
adherence: The World Health Organisation “WHO” data suggests 20% to 50% non-
adherence
• We can now “MEASURE this objectively “– no self-reporting bias
What is YOURmeds?
• YOURmeds is an intelligent Medication Packaging Solution (IMPS)
o Comprises of four (4) components, Medpack, Tag, Portal & Apps

YOURmeds Medpack
& Solution
1. Consolidated, multi-medication label.
2. Clear and concise patient information with
photo ID and large fonts for identification.
Patient Information includes, name, photo ID,
address, DOB, sensitivities and allergies, GP etc.
3. Colour coded round times are conducive for
easy, simple and correct administration of
rounds.
4. Medication information is dynamically
resized to optimise space, ensuring the clearest
possible names, directions and warnings., and
full colour images of medications enable quick
cross checking and easy identification.
5. Coloured key on label, right hand side shows
total quantity of specific medication in the white
box, with specific dose for a round, shown in the
corresponding round colour coordinated box.
6. Removable, reusable YOURmeds cellular tag.
Immediate messaging capabilities of non use
and after use. Patients, families & HCPs can
receive messaging influencing behaviour that
supports adherence.
7. Tag screens display blister numbers to be
taken.
8. Audibly alerts the patient with a personalised
ringtone to notify a medication time.
9. Tamper-evident large blisters caters for many
medications per round.
10. Clear display of blister numbers and colour
on front and back of blisters.
11. Simply Push, Pinch, Pull to access the blister
12. Existing Standard UK card usage

Increasing Capacity in Social Care

• We are focused on two Clinical Priorities
– Patients at Risk of Heart Failure (2% of NHS Budget)
– Type 2 Diabetes (7% of NHS Budget)
• QA Hospital – Portsmouth has 800 patients at risk of heart failure.
– Clinical Team believe at least 70% want to be adherent (560) but have issues.
30% are willfully non-adherent
– Re- admission rates are high, with associated costs.
– We can target the 560 patients who want to improve adherence
• Type 2 Diabetes: a multi centre study to assess whether YOURmeds helps patients
manage their condition.
• Bristol / Weston, Leeds, Isle of Wight
– Currently preparing the research protocol supported by NIHR-RDS.
– Senior consultants keen to explore the potential of YOURmeds.

Implications: o Up to £4,685,000,000 of medication is potentially ‘not accounted for’ o Worse Outcomes for almost 50% of people with LT Conditions o Higher Cost to NHS England o Social Care Costs Increase The Numbers for England

Problem being addressed • 1 billion prescriptions dispensed in England have an NIC of £9.37 bn (Circa 8-10% of whole NHS Budget) o How many of these were taken? o How did they improve outcomes? o How do we KNOW? • Non-adherence increases burden to NHS • There is no statistically robust data that informs the debate on medication adherence: The World Health Organisation “WHO” data suggests 20% to 50% non- adherence • We can now “MEASURE this objectively “– no self-reporting bias
