• To cheer is to shout out words or phases that may
help motivate and boost the morale of a playing
team and perform netter during a game.
• Dance, on the other hand , is a physical activity
where one expresses emotions or gestures while
performing bodily movements usually in time with
rhythm.
• Today, cheer dancing is identified as one of the
most spectacular events in one of the biggest

3. WHEN DID CHEERDANCE STARTED?
On November 1898, standing in front of a
crowd of sports fans , Johnny Campbell, a
medical student, started conducting the cheer
on the spur of the moment. He was so
effective that the team won and he made
history as the first cheerleader. And thus the
current sport discipline was born.

4. WHERE DID CHEER DANCE ORIGINATED?
Princeton , Princeton , Princeton! It
was when an 1882 Prince University
graduate , Thomas Peebles , took this
idea to the University of Minnesota
that cheerleading as we know it was
about to start.

Lawrence Herkimer , The Father of
Modern Cheerleading , Dies at 89:
The Two-Way He invented the
pompom and the iconic “Herkie jump”
that remains a staple of cheering
squads to this day.

Cheerleading was founded to organize and
excite crowds at Ivy League football games
in the late 1800’s. the first cheerleader,

though only men were allowed to cheer at
first, women started to join squads in the
1920’s and 1930’s.

formations , cheerleading jumps , sharp
staccato arm movements and form. It may
contain tumbling , with both male and female
participants and influences of hip-hop and jazz
techniques, commonly used by professional
cheerleaders in the NFL and NBA.
