Compassion is the basis of morality. It is a lack of self-love that inhibits compassion for others, but making friends with ourselves removes obstacles to opening our hearts to others. Compassion is an antitoxin for the soul that keeps even poisonous impulses relatively harmless, and if one cannot find compassion in their own heart, they should look in another's before giving up on love.
