Invited adjudicator and Trainer for students of several key high schools in
Chengdu and Nanjing, such as Chengdu No. 7 Middle School and Nanjing

Senior Lecturer, Sansheng Education, September 2013 – February 2014
Taught the course “Science and Debate” for a class of 20 middle schoolers in
Chengdu
Director of Education & Senior Lecturer, Exuberant English, June 2009 – July
2013 (4 years+)
Job responsibilities included overseeing course development, working on
incentive systems, managing human resources, interpreting, translating, and
teaching. I was the first instructor in Chengdu teaching Western Philosophy
in English to classes of sixth to eighth graders, with Will Durant’s The Story
of Philosophy as reference. I also taught students classics such as 1984,
Animal Farm, and courses such as British Parliamentary debate and public
speaking. From 2009 to 2013, the average number of my students making it
to the national level of the CCTV Outlook English Speech Contest (China’s
most competitive English public speaking competition among primary and
secondary school students) was between five and six. The best results
included third and fifth place in the national grand final (out of millions of
competitors each year).

Similar debate workshops are a potential democratizing power in China. The
China column of The Economist noted the spread of English debate among
Chinese universities in the article “This house believes” (September 14,
2013). This emerging community remains on the edge of China’s struggle
for human rights, tolerance and democracy.

After I officially left the association, I continued helping members organize
events and promote British Parliamentary debates and public speaking
competitions. I helped build the first debate team at Sichuan University, and
accompanied the team to various international debate tournaments. Because
of the influence of British Parliamentary debate at Sichuan University, the
2013 FLTRP Cup Southwest China Regional was held at Sichuan University.

Shared personal experience with a class of middle school students in Ya’an
No. 2 Middle School as part of a program which helps disadvantaged
children in small towns and villages in Sichuan Province.
