What does wellbeing mean?
What are the wellbeing challenges in your
school?
Kay Batkin, Graham Mallen and Carl Brown
Active Healthy Minds:
A countywide partnership between
Public Health and schools that uses
physical activity to address mental
wellbeing in secondary schools.
• We will share the rational, overview and school
based experience of an Active Healthy Mind
approach.
• We will unpick aspects of the whole school
approach and the vital role of Physical Education
• You will consider what this would mean for you
back in your world and how you can take this
forward
Session Outcomes
Mental Wellbeing
• ‘the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy’
Oxford Dictionary
• ‘life satisfaction, optimism, self esteem, mastery and
feeling in control, having a purpose in life, and a sense of
belonging and support’ NHS
• ‘Mental wellbeing describes your mental state – how you
are feeling and how well you can cope with day-to-day
life. Our mental wellbeing can change, from day to day,
month to month or year to year’ Mind
Mental WellbeingPositive Mental
Health
Mental illness
I have a mental health
diagnosis but I am
coping well and
enjoying my life
I have no diagnosis.
I am well and enjoying
my life
I have no diagnosis,
but I am not coping
and I am not happy
I have a mental health
diagnosis but
I am not coping and I
am not happy
Is mental wellbeing an issue?
Academic Achievement – How
important is it?
• Pupils with better wellbeing are likely to achieve
better
• Effective social and emotional competencies are
associated with greater health and wellbeing,
and better achievement
• A positive association exists between academic
attainment and physical activity levels of pupils

What the students love about PE and Wellbeing
@ Manor (based on qualitative & quantitative research
conducted January 2016):
92% of year 7 and 8 students have said they enjoy taking
part in PE and Wellbeing.
Within PE they enjoy linking values (empathy, resilience,
integrity) to later life as it makes them think about their
futures.
Within Positive Education they enjoy Chimp Management,
discussing values in relation to life issues (crime, terrorism,
poverty, politics) and in particular ‘Mindfulness Meditation’
(completed at the start of each lesson – Prof Mark
Williams).
What does the data say? Does it work?
Have you ever looked at collecting data in your own
school to test the research?
How do you continue to support young people to
achieve more academically – more of the same or
time for something different?
Is PE in the driving seat in your school?
So just before you go?

  • 33. Image What the students love about PE and Wellbeing @ Manor (based on qualitative & quantitative research conducted January 2016): 92% of year 7 and 8 students have said they enjoy taking part in PE and Wellbeing. Within PE they enjoy linking values (empathy, resilience, integrity) to later life as it makes them think about their futures. Within Positive Education they enjoy Chimp Management, discussing values in relation to life issues (crime, terrorism, poverty, politics) and in particular ‘Mindfulness Meditation’ (completed at the start of each lesson – Prof Mark Williams). What does the data say? Does it work?
  • 34. Have you ever looked at collecting data in your own school to test the research? How do you continue to support young people to achieve more academically – more of the same or time for something different? Is PE in the driving seat in your school? So just before you go?
