Use Text Sets to Save the World
“The door is more than it appears. It separates who you are from who you can be. You
do not have to walk through it… You can run.”— Franklin Richards, The Fantastic Four

2. Text Sets: What
are they?
• Text sets are collections of
texts tightly focused on a
specific topic. They may
include varied genres
(fiction, nonfiction, poetry,
and so forth) and media
(such as blogs, maps,
photographs, art, primary-
source documents, and
audio recordings).

3. Text Sets: Why use them?
• “Students who read the conceptually coherent
texts demonstrated more knowledge of the
concepts in their texts, more knowledge of the
target words in their texts, and had better recall of
the novel text compared to students who read
unrelated texts. Findings suggest that there is
potential for knowledge and vocabulary to be built
during English language arts through a focus on
conceptual coherence in the design of reading
experiences for students.”

4. U.N. Definition of Sustainable
Development
In 1987, the UN Brundtland Commission
defined sustainable development as:
"meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs."
(Report of the World Commission on
Environment and Development.)
9. Sustainability Paradigm Ikerd, 2012: 5 Key Principles:
Principle 1: All materials come from the environment
Principle 2: Economic activity involves transforming natural materials
Principle 3: The environment is the final “sink” into which all wastes go
Principle 4: There is no “away” (wastes can change physical or
chemical form, but do not leave the environment)
Principle 5: The environment provides critical life-sustaining services
10. Problem Solving and Decision Making
What is happening?
Make a choice among alternatives Find the root cause
Anticipate future problems
14. And the Humming Fish which cannot live in “gluppity glop” and “schloppity schlop”
go in search of clean water.
Problem Analysis: What is the root cause?
18. "But now," says the Once-ler,
"Now that you're here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It's not.
"SO...
Catch!" calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
"It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula
Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come
back.
