The Golden Future 2011 micro- enterprise team focused on a high school in the impoverished area of Khayelitsha, South Africa, and its surrounding businesses. Their goal was to attack the systemic social and economic problems by assisting small businesses with growth strategies that will help them become more financially viable in the near future.

Total Business Visited:
Types of Businesses Visited: fruit and vegetable stand, cash store (convenience store), upholstery, barber
shop, hair salon, funeral home, education centre (daycare), fishery, shoe repair and manufacturer, and butcher.
Research and Development: To provide additional value to businesses in Khayelitsha , the 2011 micro-
enterprise team conducted site visits to various small business resources in the Cape Town area. This
information will assist Golden Future in improving the delivery of the micro-enterprise module in future years of
the project. The research and development conducted included:
• Site visits to local banks including: ABSA, Standard, Nedbank, and FNB bank.
• One-on-one meeting with South African Revenue Service (SARS) Small Business expert
• Participated in a tax seminar at the SARS to inquire about the taxation issues for small businesses
• Site visit to The Business Centre
• One-on-one meeting with The Business Centre’s Entrepreneur in Residence
• Explored various teaching methods for in-class entrepreneurship module at Usasazo High School

chips and soda pop.
