NAU CUP: Drink More Use Less!
Background:
 Northern Arizona University campus needs to revamp its sustainability efforts to
regain its status atop the most sustainable college campuses. One simple way to
contribute to this process is to implement a student friendly reusable cup program
at campus eateries. The program will henceforth be referred to as the NAU CUP.
Define Need
 Re-establishing NAU as Arizona’s Greenest campus, over more highly regarded
University of Arizona, can be aided by the implementation of reusable cups on
campus.
 If we are going to attract future students to NAU’s sustainability programs over
UA’s, we need to make the campus as sustainable as possible and act right now to
get the NAU CUP Implemented.
 NAU’s recognition, as a sustainable campus, will encourage current and future
students to live environmentally friendly. Imparting the message of sustainable
living on to students can inform those individuals’ life choices, developing a
“greener” populace of the work force.
 An ecologically informed work force can help our nation confront the problems
of, clean energy overpopulation, and global warming.
Proposal
 The purpose of this proposal is to attain funding, in the amount of $ 5,000, for a
pilot study of the NAU CUP from sustainability resources at NAU, as well as,
NAU Green Fund.
 If the pilot study proves successful I hope that further funding for campus wide
implementation can be discussed.
Implementation & Feasibility
 The NAU CUP will be metallic, without a handle, and with NAU school colors
and logo manufactured using labeled BPA free material.
 If the NAU CUP is successful in its pilot study, cups with Greek life logos and
colors as well as athletic designations could be ordered to further promote its use
on campus. A Res-life promotion could also be organized to promote the use of
the NAU CUP in the dorms.
 How best to make the monetary, environmental, and sustainability benefits of
reusable mugs on NAU campus evident to students, will be addressed in a pilot
feasibility study at the Bean and Beaker Café on North campus.
 The five members of the NAU CUP team will design the NAU CUP, posters, and
other campaign materials, in addition to collecting data on the success of the NAU
CUP at the Bean and Beaker Café.
 Three months from the time you approve this proposal, you could see NAU CUPs
reducing waste in every campus eatery and dumpster at NAU.
Response To sustainability Criteria
 By determining what NAU students want from a reusable cup, we can synthesize
our methods with a message of sustainability through reuse that will have a real
impact on the student body.
