Business Resume/Curriculum Vitae/ Cover Letter
Introduction: Resume vs. Curriculum Vitae
 Along with a cover letter, a resume and CV are essential parts of the hiring process.
 They are fundamental requirements for a job application.
 Both of them provide offer employers with a comprehensive overview of your relevant
skills, employment history, education background, and accomplishments.
 Based on this information, they can make an informed decision about whether or not they
want to interview or hire you.
 It takes hiring managers Six seconds to judge your resume to see if your experience, skills,
and qualifications match the job offers.
 A resume means a summary in French, a Curriculum Vitae refers to the “course of life” in
Latin. It is an in-depth document which describes the whole course of your career in full
detail.
 In the USA and Canada, a CV is used only for academic applications: academic jobs, grants, research
fellowships, etc.
 In the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand, a CV is used in all contexts and resumes aren’t used at all.
 In Australia, India, and South Africa, the terms resume and CV are used interchangeably
CV Resume
-Emphasizes academic accomplishments
-Long detailed document with no length
limit up to ten pages.
- is formatted chronologically
- CVs are generally used when applying for
academia-based carreers (education,
scientific, medical, or research positions)
- Static
- It is competency-based Emphasizing skills
-Short and brief summary of your work
experience, key skills, and job-specific
qualifications. .
-It is a one to 2 pages focusing on work
history, rather than academic success
- Used when applying for business industry
positions non-profit roles.
- highly customizable with a focus on job-
specific qualifications
The major differences between CVs and resumes concern the length, the purpose, and the layout.
There are four types of Resume
1. Chronological Resumes
A chronological resume opens with an introduction, and then provides an overview of
your professional history in reverse-chronological order (meaning your most recently
held position is listed at the top). The chronological resume format is the most common
type of resume used by job seekers today, and is suitable for candidates with a variety of
different experience levels.
2. Functional Resumes
A functional resume is formatted to focus on your skills and abilities, rather than your
chronological work history. It is preferred by professionals who want to draw attention
away from their traditional work experience, such as those who are changing careers or
have significant gaps in their work history. If you lack relevant work experience because
you are a student/recent graduate, or you are looking to make a career change, the skills-
based format is a better choice.
3.Targeted Resumes
A targeted resume is a resume tailored for each position you apply for. This means
highlighting any highly relevant skills and experience you have, and writing your
resume to focus on these qualifications. To write a strong targeted resume, scan through
the job listing for the position you want to fill. Typically, hiring managers include the
skills, responsibilities, and traits that they want candidates to possess in the job
description. Then, highlight these qualities on your resume to demonstrate that you are
an ideal fit for the position (if you have them).
4.Combination Resumes
A combination resume is a format that (true to its name) combines the best aspects of a
functional resume and a chronological resume. While a chronological resume focuses
heavily on experience and a functional resume emphasizes skills, a combination resume
typically leverages both work history and skills equally to demonstrate your
qualifications. Combination resumes are ideal for candidates who have extensive
experience or a highly developed set of skills that they want to highlight.
Resume Layout Must-Haves:
1. One page in length. You should only go for 2 pages if you really, really believe that
it’ll add significant value. HR managers in big firms get around 1,000+ resumes per
month. They are not going to spend their valuable time reading your life story!
2. Clear section headings. Pick a heading (H2, for example) and use it for all the section
headers.
3. Ample white space, especially around the margins.
4. Easy-to-read font. We would recommend sticking to what stands out, but not too
much. Do Ubuntu, Roboto, Overpass, etc. Do not (ever): Comic Sans
5. Pick the right font size. As a rule of thumb, go for 11 - 12 pt for normal text, and 14 -
16 pt for section titles.
Resume sections
The most important sections of a resume can be indicated as follows:
 Contact Information:
First Name / Last Name.
Phone Number.
Email Address.
Location
LinkedIn URL/ Website/ blog
 Professional Resume Summary or Objective
Resume summary statement or Executive summary is a 2-3 sentence summary of your career.
It summarizes the candidate’s key selling points, highlights their professional strengths, their
work history, impressive achievements, and most relevant skills. It concisely explains why
you’re the most qualified person for the job. You should use a resume summary in basically
any situation, unless you’re a recent university graduate or switching careers (in that case,
you use a resume objective).
Example1: “IT project manager with 5+ years of experience in software development.
Managed a team of developers to create products for several industries, such as
FinTech and HR tech. Looking to leverage my experience in managing outsourced
products as a Product Owner at XYZ.”
Example2: Driven software engineer with 6+ years of experience executing cutting-
edge engineering solutions with a wide range of e-commerce application and
technology skills. Able to leverage full-stack expertise to build interactive and user-
centered website designs to scale.
Resume Objective: It communicates your motivation for getting into a new field. As
with a resume summary, a resume objective should be around 2-3 sentences. Desired
goal, passion for working at a specific company). E.g.: Looking for new opportunities
as a support lead for a SaaS company.
 Work Experience (and Achievements)
The standard format for your work experience is as follows:
 Job Title/Position - Your job title goes on top of each work experience entry.
 Company Name / Location / Description - Then, you mention the name of
the relevant employer, as well as the location of the office you have worked
in.
 Achievements and Responsibilities - This is the core of each work experience
entry. Depending on your field, you want to list either your achievements or
responsibilities.
 Dates Employed - The timeframe of your employment in each company. The
standard format expected by recruiters and employers is mm/yyyy
 Education
 Program Name. e.g: “Mechanical Engineering”, “B.A. in Business Administration”
 Institution’s Name. E.g.: “ California State University”
 Years Attended E.g.: “08/2014 - 06/2020”
 Degree and Honors. Ph.D. Master degree…
 Academic achievements. Interesting papers you have written, courses you have excelled in.
 Internships, extracurricular activities, projects,
 Skills
 Mention all your know-how that makes you the perfect candidate for the job.
 Hard Skills (Measurable abilities). This can be anything from coding in Python to knowing
how to cook Thai cuisine.
 Soft Skills (Personal skills). These are a mix of social skills, communication skills, personal
traits, career attributes, and so on. Leadership, critical thinking, management…
Languages
To list languages in your resume, write them down and assign them the appropriate level:
 Native
 Fluent
 Proficient
 Intermediate
 Basic
Projects:
-Project name
-Project type
- Related organization
-Time period-
