Charities and non-profits often consider adults with a stable income as their primary
fundraising demographic. Here’s why they should be considering young adults:
• Young adults are crucial force in generating awareness for a cause
• Engaging young adults does not always entail a complicated “ask” nor does it
require them to make a donation
• Young adults like to engage with brands by establishing meaningful connections
• Building a relationship with this group will drive them to donate and/or fundraise
in support of your organization in the future

TIP 1: PULL AT THE HEARTSTRINGS

With websites such as Thought Catalogue and Upworthy gaining popularity, it’s
increasingly apparent that the younger generations are associating themselves with
“feel good” content.
• Showcase content that young adults can relate to
• Appeal to their emotions in order to provoke engagement with your brand
• Encourage young adults to see beyond the monetary value of a donation and
understand the practical applications of funds received
TIP 2: KEEP IT RELEVANT

Social media is the world’s biggest communications platform and what group knows
how to use the many platforms available better than Generation Y?
• Your charity needs to be active on multiple platforms if you want to connect with
these younger generations
• Make your content relevant if you want to engage with them on a deeper level
• Use social media to convey important information about your brand
EXAMPLE: Me to We is a great example of an “innovative social enterprise”. It uses
social media to convey information: to recruit young ambassadors, inform them of
concerts that are being hosted where celebrities attend, provide a platform to shop
for products that can “change the world,” and acts as a resource regarding the latest
online trends.
TIP 3: INTERACTIVE APPROACHES

Being interactive with your audience is key to a successful fundraising campaign – it
serves to build a relationship between your charity and your stakeholders.
• Consider creating a social media campaign/challenge which they can participate
with on their own terms
• Use a specific hashtag leading up to an event to help spread the word about your
brand
Example: Leading up to a fundraising race, ask followers to post an Instagram of
themselves #training. This helps spread the word when they share their posts with
friends about their involvement in your cause while promoting the campaign,
helping generate interest and subsequent funds, and creating a community around
the cause.
TIP 4: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & TRAVEL

Many young adults, especially university and college students, may be more willing
to get involved with your charity if you offer volunteer opportunities abroad.
This could be easily offered in the form of a charity initiative.
• Offer young adults the opportunity to make friends and make a difference
• Associating a sense of personal advancement with a sense of active engagement
with your charity is extremely valuable for young adults’ continued commitment
to your brand
