2. What is sound ?
Sound is a pressure waves of air. So without air
there will be no sound . (there are no sounds in
outer space)
When stanely kubric made his film 2001 : a space
odyssey he made all the scenes in outer space mute .

3. When you make a sound like clap , the air that
was between your hands is pushed aside.
Increasing the air pressure near your hands. The
high pressure pushes the air molecules outwards
in all directions at the speed of sound, (340
meters per second) . the pressure wave reaches
your ear, you hear the clap.
4. - We hear sounds because our ears
are sensitive to the pressure waves
of sound .
5. Human ear
sound is collected and localized into the ear. A
special outer vestige of the ear, known as the
pinna
Next, sound is tunneled down the auditory canal
(aslightly bent tube that extends from the ear hole
to the eardrum)
At the far end of the canal is the eardrum, which
vibrates to a certain extent after being exposed to
the sound waves
After hitting the eardrum, the sound waves are
transmitted to the middle ear ( a small, air-filled
chamber)
6. Through a series of ossicles (the three smallest
bones in the human body), these waves are pushed
into the chamber
Sound then travels to the inner ear, where it is
converted to electrical impulses in order to be sent
to the brain
Finally, the auditory nerve sends neural messages
from the cochlea(The cochlea looks like a spiral-
shaped snail shell deep in your ear. And it plays an
important part in helping you hear: it changes
sounds into nerve messages ..) to the brain
7. Sound in films
-You can't fully understand the moving picture
without a sound comes with even in the early
days of silent cinema there used to be a small
orchestra in the movie theatre to play with the
silent film ( that is why we are used to hear
music as sound effect comes with films .
-Sound in film is divided into two categories :
1. Diegetic
2. Nondiegetic
8. Diegetic sound (actual sound) is:
any sound presented as originated from
source within the film's world
•Voices of characters
•Sound made by objects in the story
•Music played on instrument on the screen
10. You can't have a good film no matter
how good everything else ( picture,
acting .. etc) without a good sound You
can't have a good film no matter how
good everything else ( picture, acting ..
etc) without a good sound
In this video clip the , the calling for prayer is a
diegetic, while the voice of the narrator is
nondiegtic.

11. The sound department
•Production sound : Poom operator , the mixer .
•Post – production sound : sound editor , ADR
editor , background editor , sound effect editor ,
Foley artist , music editor .
•Final mix: re – recording mixer .
•Supervising sound editor
12.
13. - The first stage on the production sound is the most
important even the best editors can't make a terrible
sound great
- Planning for a good sound starts with writing .
Choosing to write a scene on the middle of traffic area for
example is a problem for the sound recordist from the
beginning but if it's a must for the story then it's the
sound team to find a solution .
1. Is this location ideal for shooting ?
2. What equipment is required for optimal result ?
3. How to position ourselves to capture the cleanest
audio ?
14. We use …
I. a directional mike attached to a Poom pole to make a
s close to actors as possible when are as far from the
scene as possible .
II. we use a wireless lavaliere mike to give freedom for
the actor to move and act as he want without losing
his dialogue .
III. we use a mixer to control the sensitivity level of
recorded sound with regulating the gain and level
setting .
IV. we record the sound on a recorder or directly to the
camera .
then we send it to post production .
15. a good recorded sound can save you time
and money on post .
good sound is not the
responsibility of the sound
department only it's everybody's
job on set to help getting a good
sound .
