is a real-life reporter
Run around with Rosa on her
adventures, and discover with her
how a newspaper is made.
3. The alarm clock rings. "Oh no; I don‛t want to get up
yet," Rosa groans. She shoves Emil under her arm.
Emil is her green elephant. Suddenly she
remembers. "No playschool today. It‛s a holiday."
Rosa is going to work with Daddy today.
She‛s been looking forward to this all
week. Daddy has a vveerryy eexxcciittiinngg jjoobb..
He‛s a reporter and writes stories
for the newspaper.
1
5. Mommy and Daddy are sitting at the kitchen table
and reading the newspaper.
"Good morning, Rosa. I bet you and Emil are looking
forward to all the things we‛re going to do today,"
says Daddy.
3
6. "We‛ll just read the newspaper a bit before we leave,
so that we know what‛s been going on." Daddy reads
out a report from the newspaper to Rosa. The phone
rings. "We‛ll be over straight away,"
says Daddy. "Right, we
have to rush off now.

down at the
horse farm."
4
7. Rosa and Daddy are
sitting in the car. Emil‛s head is sticking out of
Rosa‛s bag. Rosa doesn‛t go anywhere without Emil.
5
8. "Twin foals are very unusual. A mare usually only has
one foal, very rarely two," says Daddy. "That‛s why
we‛ve got to get the story into tomorrow‛s
newspaper."
6
9. Rosa has to run to keep up with her Daddy.
Daddy has a camera around his neck and a notebook
and a pen in his shirt pocket.
7
10. Two little foals are lying on the
ground in the stable. They keep trying to stand up,
but their legs wobble like jelly. They look real funny.
8
11. Daddy takes photos of the two young horses. After
that, he does an interview with Mr. Wilks, the man
from the horse farm.
Daddy asks him lots of questions and writes every-thing
Mr. Wilks says down real fast in his notebook.
"Are they boy horses or girls?" asks Rosa. "Two fine
colts, playful young lads, my dear," he laughs friendly.
9
12. "I‛d call the smaller of them
Emil. That‛s the name of my
elephant," says Rosa, pointing
to her elephant. "That‛s a good
idea. Why not? Let‛s call him Emil!" says the man
from the horse farm. Rosa is delighted.
10
13. "Next stop is a playground, Rosa. They have a huge slide
there, the longest slide for
miles around,"
Daddy says.
11
14. "Can I go on the slide with Emil?" Rosa asks all
excited. "Of course you can," says Daddy. "And I‛ll
take a photo of the two of you. Then you‛ll be in the
newspaper tomorrow, too," says Daddy.
"Great," says Rosa.
12
15. There‛s lots of activity going on
at the playground. There are
lots of kids standing around
with their parents at the
big long slide and looking
up in awe. "Wow, it sure
iiss lloonngg,,"" RRoossaa llooookkss
up in amazement
too.
13
16. Daddy says hello to a woman and shakes her hand.
"We‛ve been waiting for you. Great, now we can open
the slide," says the lady. The lady has a big fashion
shop and she donated the slide.
"That means she bought the slide
and gave it as a present
to tthhee ppllaayyggrroouunndd,,""
says Daddy.
14
17. "Hey, come on Rosa! You can go on the slide now,"
Daddy calls over to Rosa. Everyone looks at her as
she slowly climbs the steps. Her knees start to
shake. So she clings on to Emil, going up step by step.
When she gets to the top of the slide, she sits down
holding Emil on her lap. The children all look tiny
from where she is. "My, but it is high hhiigghh up uupp here," hheerree,,"" she
sshhee
whispers into Emil‛s ear and waits there in silence a
while. `
"Come on, Emil! Let‛s show the other kids how
to do it," says
Rosa.
15
18. She lets go and flies down the slide.
The children all clap their hands
and Daddy takes piles of photos
of Rosa and Emil with his
camera. Rosa is
real proud.
16
19. 17
The next place
Daddy goes
is a big
building site.
20. They are building a new railway tunnel for trains to
go through. The foreman‛s name is Fred. Fred gives
Daddy and Rosa a helmet. That‛s for safety, to
protect their heads. Fred, Daddy and Rosa walk all
over the huge building site wearing the helmets on
their heads. Daddy asks the foreman heaps of questions.
There are big diggers and cranes all oovveerr tthhee ppllaaccee..
18
21. They stop in
front of a great big hole
made by a digger. Daddy takes
a photo. "Boy, that sure is a deep hole," says Rosa to
herself. She leans over the hole. Suddenly, Emil slips
out of her bag and falls straight down into the great
big hole. Rosa screams, "Emil!" Daddy ggrraabbss RRoossaa bbyy
the arm to make sure she doesn‛t jump in after Emil.
Rosa starts to cry. Fred the Foreman tells her it will
be alright and thinks hard about what to do.
19
22. After a few minutes,
Fred has a good idea.
"We‛ll be able to get Emil out
of the hole with our digger."
The driver of the digger gently
scoops the little elephant out
of the hhoollee aanndd ppllaannttss hhiimm
right beside Rosa.
Rosa is happy again.
20
23. "Now we have to drive back to the news office,"
says Daddy. Daddy still has a lot of things to do.
He has to type everything that Rosa and Daddy saw
today into the computer. That will go
into tomorrow‛s newspaper.
21
24. All the reports have to be ready before they
can start printing the newspaper.
22
25. There are lots of men and women in the office
writing up their reports. Daddy sits down at his
desk, Rosa beside him. "Let‛s look at the photos
first," says Daddy.
23
26. Rosa is allowed to pick the nicest photo.
Daddy starts to type into the computer real fast.
When he is finished, he reads his report out
loud to Rosa. Rosa is delighted.
24
27. At long last, Daddy is
finished. Before they
go home, Daddy shows Rosa
the print shop, where
the newspapers are printed.
Tomorrow‛s newspaper is
being pprriinntteedd rriigghhtt tthhiiss
minute. Daddy pulls out
one of the newspapers.
25
28. "It‛s still warm," says Rosa. And the photo of Rosa
and Emil on the big slide is right in the middle of the
first page of the newspaper!
"Am I famous?" asks Rosa.
"I think you are," Daddy answers.
26
29. Reporter
A reporter writes stories for the newspaper. Reporters go to
see things as they happen, like when the children go on the big
slide in the playground.
Report
Reports are stories about what happens in your town and all
over the world.
News staff
All the reporters and photographers who work for a newspaper
are the news staff. They work in the news office.
Printing shop
When all the reports, photographs and other things are ready,
big machines print ink onto paper ,
cut the paper and make it into
newspapers. The machines are in a printing shop.
30. Make yourself
29
a ROSA
newspaper hat
Take a double page
out of a newspaper.
31. 30
There are two
edges left over
at the bottom.
Fold two ends over
till they meet in
the middle.
Fold one of the
two edges
towards you …
32. That
looks great!
31
… and the
other edge
towards the back.
Now all you need
to do is turn in
the corners that
are sticking out.
It will hold better
if you use some tape.
33. Put on your hat and you can be a reporter, too. Take the rest of
the newspaper, a pair of scissors and a glue stick. Look through
the newspaper for the letters in the boxes below. Cut the
letters out of the newspaper and paste them into the boxes.
