SpiritualWarfare – Lesson 3,
PART 1
NIHOP, May 2015
I. WARFARE AGAINST THE FLESH –
Desires- deeds (acts) – foothold – stronghold
Any stronghold is immediately an open gate to the enemy
II. WARFARE AGAINST THE WORLD
Satanic control
Sinful control
Operating on the dynamics of “lust of the flesh,” “lust of the eyes”
and “pride of life”
MAIN POINT: WE MUST WINTHEWAR AGAINST THE FLESH, AND
AGAINSTTHEWORLD IN OUR PERSONAL LIFE, BEFOREWE HOPE
TO ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITHTHE EVIL SPIRITWORLD
10 ”Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty
power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you
can take your stand against the devil’s schemes
(strategies). 12 For our struggle is not against flesh
and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities (principalities), against the powers of
this dark world and against the spiritual forces of
evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on
the full armor of God,so that when the day of evil
comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and
after you have done everything, to stand.”
- (Seraphs) Ministers to God
Who sits on HisThrone
- (Cherubs) Enforces God
orders directly from the
Throne
- (Thrones/Rulers) Ruling
angels under whose
command are companies of
angels (like extension
offices)
- (Dominions/Principalities)
are like army detachments
(of angels) in charge of areas
- (Powers) are angels with
specific skills (ex., healing,
worship, understanding,
miracles, etc.

SATAN’S ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE 2 Cor.4:3-4, Eph. 2:1-2
1) Satan (cherub level): The devil was originally a cherub, first in rank
among the elect angels,
2) Thrones (elder level): These "kings" are apparently the heads of
Satan's world-wide network for administering his "kingdom of this
world" (Rev.11:15).
3) Princes (archangel level): These are the sarim discussed under
archangel above. Daniel 10:13 and 10:20-21 mention the "prince of
Persia" and the "prince of Greece",
4) Authorities (authority level): This is the only rank level for which
there is apparently no additional or alternative name among the
fallen angels.
5) World-rulers (power level): These are the demon equivalent to the
dynameis or "powers".
6) (spirit level): This is both the rank and file of fallen angels and the
common name by which all of them are described. Known by a
variety of names,
7) demons
 We are also told that one third of an “innumerable company of
angels” (Hebrews 12:22) chose to rebel with him. John saw this
great wonder in heaven, “…an enormous red dragon…His tail
swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the
earth…the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent
called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He
was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him” (Revelation
12:3-9).
Since Satan is referred to as a star which fell or was cast down to
earth, and Revelation 12:4 says a third of the stars were cast out
with him, then the conclusion is that the stars in Revelation 12
refer to fallen angels, fully one third of the heavenly host. If the
one-third number is in fact accurate, what assurance that is!Two
thirds of the angels are still on God's side, and for followers of
Christ, they are on our side as well.
 Chief Kings and Chief Princes, command
 Kings and Princes who rule various geographical and
spiritual areas.
 There are kingdoms, principalities, dominions and
powers which are administered by Kings and Princes.
Each state in the United states is ruled over by a prince.
 A General is in charge of a Legion (6,000)
 Prince will control a number of Legions.
 A Ruler or Captain commands a Cohort (600),
 there can be Chief Captains and Chief Rulers with still
more authority.
 A Centurion controls 100 demons;
 if he controls less than a hundred demons he is called
a Strongman.
“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his
mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of
God, so that you can take your stand against
the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities (principalities), against
the powers OFTHIS DARK WORLD and
against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms.”
WE WILL STUDYTHE HIGHER RANKS
IN OUR NEXT LESSONS, BUT FORTHIS
LESSON WE FOCUS ON DEMONS AND
HOWTHEY ARE DEFEATED IN CHRIST
AND BY US IN CHRIST
Greek etymology – DAEMON – a supernatural being, a god-like
being, with natures both human and deity
 the Greek form, translated “devil” in the King JamesVersion of
the NewTestament
 Demons are spoken of as spiritual beings (Matt. 8:16; 10:1; 12:43-
45) at enmity with God, and as having a certain power over man
(James 2:19; Rev. 16:14).
 They recognize our Lord as the Son of God (Matt. 8:20; Luke 4:41).
They belong to the number of those angels that “kept not their
first estate,” “unclean spirits,” “fallen angels,” the angels of
the devil (Matt. 25:41; Rev. 12:7-9).They are the “principalities and
powers” against which we must “wrestle” (Eph. 6:12).
 The word demon(s) does not appear in the King James Bible,
which uses the word “devils” instead. The New King James Bible
uses the word “demon(s)” in 72 verses.
 Do all demons (devils) fear the one true God?Yes. (James 2:19)
Wickedness in the World
 6 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and
daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the
daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them
they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend
with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred
and twenty years.”
 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—
when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had
children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
 5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become
on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human
heart was only evil all the time. 6The LORD regretted that he had made
human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So
the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I
have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures
that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But
Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
1. One theory says the “sons of God” in Genesis
6 refer to the godly line of Seth (believers of
God) inter-married with the ungodly line of
Cain (daughters of men)
PROBLEM: This cannot explain the
NEPHILIMS, or the giants
2. Another theory says the “sons of God” refer
to ANGELIC BEINGS…
 Job 1:6:
“Now there was a day when the sons of God
came to present themselves before the Lord, and
Satan came also among them.”
 Here we find that the sons of God were
angels, and Satan is numbered among them.
The sons of God are mentioned also in
chapter 38:7 (KJV):
When the morning stars sang together, and all
the sons of God shouted for joy?
1. In the NewTestament, born-again believers in Christ are
called the children of God or the sons of God (Luke 3:38, John 1:12,
Romans 8:14, 1John 3:1). Dr. Bullinger in the Companion Bible states:
"It is only by the divine specific act of creation that any created being
can be called 'a son of God.'"This explains why every born-again
believer is a son of God.
2. Adam was a son of God. Adam was specifically created by
God, "in the likeness of God made He him" (Genesis 5:1). Adam's
descendants, however, were different; they were not made in God's
likeness but in Adam's. Adam "begat a son in his own likeness, after his
image" (Genesis 5:3). Adam was a "son of God," but Adam's
descendants were "sons of men."
3. "In the OldTestament terminology angels are called sons of
God while men are called servants of God. In the NewTestament this is
reversed. Angels are the servants and Christians are the sons ofGod."
 As for the use of the term in Genesis 6, since it cannot possibly refer
to Adam nor believers in Christ, we conclude that it has to refer to the
angels whom God had created.
“BENE ELOHIM” - BEN – SON; bene – sons ELOHIM – GOD
“Sons of God” REFER TO ANGELS WHO HAD AUTHORITY
TO RULETHE UNIVERSE ANDTHE EARTH WITH GOD
“5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that
the Lord[c] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but
later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels
who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned
their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound
with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a
similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding
towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and
perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the
punishment of eternal fire.”
“1 When human beings began to increase in number on
the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons
of God saw that the daughters of humans were
beautiful, and they married any of them they
chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend
with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days
will be a hundred and twenty years.”
4The Nephilim were on the earth INTHOSE DAYS—
and ALSO AFTERWARD—when the sons of God went
to the daughters of humans and had children by
them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.”
 Notice that the Nephilim were on the earth in
those days. Those days were the days preceding
the flood. However, Genesis also says that they
were on the earth afterward. In other words,
they were on the earth after the flood. Genesis
7:21 says that all mankind perished in the flood,
so HOW COULDTHEY HAVE SURVIVEDTHE
FLOOD?
 There is only one explanation: THEY
REMAINED ONTHE EARTH INTHE FORM OF
DISEMBODIED SPIRITS.
 Someone might say, "Wait a minute, there were also
giants during the days of David. Goliath was a giant,
so Moses was referring to the giants in David’s day."
Moses could not be referring to the giants in David’s
day because Moses had long died before David. So he
could not have been writing about Goliath.
 Someone might say, "There were giants in the
promise land during the days of Moses."
 No there weren’t. It was the rebels who declared that
there were giants in the promised land.
 "...All the people we saw there are of great size. We
saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak
come from the Nephilim)... (Numbers 13:32-33)
 Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But
those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the
resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and
they can never die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children,
since they are children of the resurrection. (Luke 20:34-37)
 The way Luke puts the words of Christ, humans will be like the angels
because they can never die, not because they can never marry. However,
the way Matthew constructs the sentence, it appears different:
 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they
will be like the angels in heaven. (Matthew 22:30)
 "You see," someone may argue, "angels can’t marry, so the sons of God
could not refer to angels because the sons of God married."
 Before someone debates this point, they should take note that only
the angels in heaven don’t marry. There is no mentioned about the
angels who were cast out of heaven.
 An incubus is a demon in male form who,
according to mythological and legendary
traditions, lies upon sleepers, especially women,
in order to engage in sexual activity with them.
Its female counterpart is the succubus. An
incubus may pursue sexual relations with a
woman in order to father a child, as in the
legend of Merlin.[1] Religious tradition holds that
repeated sexual activity with an incubus or
succubus may result in the deterioration of
health, or even death.[2]
THE WATCHERS
Significantly, the Book of Enoch (like the Genesis Apocryphon) refers to
these "sons of God" as Watchers.
 A term, as already noted, found in the Book of Daniel. (5) Why this
particular word should be used, we are not told; possibly because part of
their function was to keep vigil. R.H.C. Charles, who translates the word
"watchers" as "the angels, the children of heaven," obviously believed
they referred to one and the same beings.
The Book of Enoch alleges that two hundred of
these Watchers descended to Earth in the days of Jared (Genesis 5:18),
and some of them are given names. The worst one of all is called Azazel.
The name occurs in other Jewish documents, like the Apocalypse of
Abraham. Azazel is accused of having "scattered over the earth the
secrets of heaven and hath rebelled against the MightyOne." His name is
also found in ancient Jewish ritual concerning the Day of Atonement.
On that day, the iniquities of the people of Israel were laid on the scapegoat, and
then the scapegoat was driven away "to Azazel, to the wilderness" (Leviticus 16).
Azazel was a demon who inhabited a region in the Judean wilderness.
There is an interesting aside on Azazel in a brilliant essay by Dr. Jacob Z.
Lauterbach explaining certain "stray references to the activity of Satan onYom
Kippur."The ritual of that day, said Lauterbach, sought to negate Satan's efforts in
three ways:The Azazel sacrifice to appease him; the smoke of the incense to drive
him away; and the white robes of the High Priest, so different from his usual
vestments, a disguise to mislead him. (6)
In the Book ofJubilees a different reason is given as to why the Watchers came to
Earth. It was in order "to instruct the children of men and to bring about justice and
equity on the Earth."
However, the story ends in the same way: instead of instigating justice and equity,
they lusted after the women of Earth, and merited the full judgment of God.
Book of the Wars of the Lord
Numbers 21:14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord,What he did in
the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,
Certain sources believe that this is to be found by drawing text from several Old
Testament books. There are no authoritative sources for this text.
Book of Jasher
Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the
sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
2 Samuel 1:18 (Also he bade them teach the children ofJudah the use of the bow:
behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)
The Manner of the Kingdom / Book of Statutes
1 Samuel 10:25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it
in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every
man to his house.

Acts of Uziah
2 Chronicles 26:22 Now the rest of the acts of
Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the
son of Amoz, write.
 The Annals of King David
1 Chronicles 27:24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to
count the men but did not finish.Wrath came on
Israel on account of this numbering, and the
number was not entered in the book of the annals
of King David.
 It became generally accepted that incubi and succubi
were the same demon, able to switch between male
and female forms.[9] A succubus would be able to
sleep with a man and collect his sperm, and then
transform into an incubus and use that seed on
women. Even though sperm and egg came from
humans originally, the spirits' offspring were often
thought of as supernatural.[10]
 Though many tales claim that the incubus
is bisexual,[11] others indicate that it is
strictly heterosexual and finds attacking a male victim
either unpleasant or detrimental.[12]
These are also called FAMILIAR SPIRITS which are
actually demons.
 Leviticus 19:31;20:6,27; and Deuteronomy 18:9-14refer to
“mediums and familiar spirits” and forbids being involved
with them, as they are an abomination to the Lord. A
medium is one who acts as a liaison to supposedly contact
or communicate with the dead on behalf of the living. In
reality mediums are contacting demons who convince
the mediums that they are “familiar” and can be
trusted and believed. The practices associated with
mediums and familiar spirits were banned in Israel, and
the punishment for practicing such things was death.
 NOTE; LUKE 16 –THERE IS NO CROSSING OFTHE
DIVIDE BETWEENTHE ETERNAL STATES AND EARTH
 Heb. 1:1414 Are they
not all ministering
spirits sent out to
serve for the sake of
those who are
to inherit salvation?
 Psalm 91:10 “No evil
will befall you, Nor will
any plague come near
your tent. 11For He
will give His angels
charge concerning
you,To guard you in
all your ways. 12They
will bear you up in their
hands,That you do not
strike your foot against
a stone.…”
 Enoch is instructed by the Most High to deliver this warning to the Watchers:
 "Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness, go, declare to the watchers of heaven, who
have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves
with women, and have done as the children of earth do, and have taken unto
themselves wives: 'Ye have wrought great destruction on the earth: And ye shall
have no peace nor forgiveness of sin.'"
 These same Watchers in turn approached Enoch to mediate on their behalf, and
to write out a petition in their favor.
 God, however, rejects the petition and Enoch is summoned to speak to the
Watchers again:
 "Go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent thee to intercede for them:
'Ye should intercede for men, and not men for you. Wherefore have ye left high,
holy and eternal heaven, and lain with women and defiled yourselves with the
daughters of men, and taken wives unto yourselves and done like the child of
earth and begotten giants as sons. And although ye were holy, spiritual living and
eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and have
begotten children with the blood of flesh, have lusted after flesh and blood as
those who do die and perish.'"
 And as for the giants or Nephilim produced by them:
 "The giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called
evil spirits upon the earth...Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies;
because they are born from men and from the holyWatchers is their
beginning and primal origin...And the spirits of the giants afflict,
oppress, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth...
 And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the
women, because they have proceeded from them...thus shall they
destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgment in which
the age shall be consummated over theWatchers and the godless, yea,
shall be wholly consummated. And now as to theWatchers... say to them
therefore: 'Ye have no peace.'"
 Such was the message given to Enoch, who transmitted it to the
Watchers and their progeny on Earth.
 When Jesus cast out the Legions from the
man of Gadara, the demons cried out to
Jesus, "Have you come here to torture us
before the appointed time?" (Matthew
8:29).
 There is an appointed time for their
punishment. It is not now. So we must still
deal with demon spirits.
1. Demons are DISEMBODIED SPIRITS
2. They are the SPIRITS of the PRODUCTS OFTHE
UNION OFTHE FALLEN ANGELS OF GENESIS 6
WITH WOMEN OFTHOSE DAYS
3. They produced NEPHILIMS AND GIANTS
4. They BECAME DISEMBODIED (LOSTTHEIR
HUMAN BODY HABITATIONS) DURINGTHE
FLOOD AND WHEN DAVID KILLEDTHE
ANAKITES
5. THEY ARE STILL ON EARTH
6. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR BODIES TO POSSESS
7. THEY ARE PROPERLY CALLED DEMONS OR
FAMILIAR SPIRITS
1. Demons are SPIRITSWHO LOSTTHEIR BODIES AND ARE
LOOKING FOR BODIESTO POSSESS
Fallen angels HAVETHEIR CELESTIAL BODIES
2. Demons NEED HUMAN BODIESTO EXPRESS
THEMSELVES; FALLEN ANGELS HAVE NO SUCH NEEDS
3. Demons just “walk” (Matt. 12:43, “When the unclean
spirit comes out of the man, he walks through arid places,
seeking rest, and finding none, then he says I will return to
the house came out of… and takes with him seven more
spirits more wicked than himself…”
Fallen angels fly
1. You cast out demons, but you pray to God for Him to
deal with the fallen angels, just like Daniel did in Daniel 10.
2. The ORIGIN OF DEMONS – DISEMBODIED SPIRITS, is
SEXUAL SIN (SEX BETWEEN ANGELS AND HUMANS).
Demons are sex-hungry. They gravitate towards sex.
ILLICIT SEX OPENS US UPTO DEMONS.
--This might explain why the mad man of Gerasenes
was naked, and when the demons left him, he clothed
himself (Mark 5:15).
--This why Mary of Magdalene—through being a
prostitute—had opened herself to seven demons (Mark
16:9). Sexual perversion opens the door to demons.
“15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of
Christ himself ? Shall I then take the members of Christ
and unite them with a prostitute? Never!
16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a
prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two
will become one flesh."
17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with
him in spirit.
18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man
commits are outside his body, but he who sins
sexually sins against his own body.”
WHY? HOW? BECAUSE HE BRINGS IN A SPIRIT IN
HIS OWN BODY
DEMONS ARE EARTH-BOUND,
DISEMBODIED SPIRITS, ARETHE FOOT
SOLDIERS OF SATAN (HIS GROUNDTROOPS).
They are the GROUND IMPLEMENTORS OF
SATAN’SAGENDA AGAINST US….
(but CHRIST ALREADY BROKE SATAN’S
HEAD ATTHE CROSS…)
1. INFLICT DISEASESOR INABILITIES – Matt. 9:33
Jesus Heals the Blind and Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out,
"Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked
them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied.
29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be
done to you";
30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one
knows about this."
31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could
not talk was brought to Jesus.
33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute
spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been
seen in Israel."
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
 5 uThey came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the
Gerasenes.1 2 And when Jesus2 had stepped out of the boat, immediately
there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 vHe lived
among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with
a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he
wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one
had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and
on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with
stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and wfell down before
him. 7 And xcrying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do
with me, Jesus, ySon of zthe Most High God? aI adjure you by God, do not
torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you
unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He
replied, “MY NAME IS BLEGION, FORWE ARE MANY.” 10And he
begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a
great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged
him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them
permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and
the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank
into the sea and drowned in the sea.
MARK 1
 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came,
Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The
people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught
them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the
law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was
possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you
want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to
destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of
him!” 26The impure spirit shook the man violently and
came out of him with a shriek.
 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each
other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority!
He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey
him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole
region of Galilee.
1Timothy 4
 4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will
abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and
things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come
through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have
been seared as with a hot iron. 3They forbid people
to marry and order them to abstain from certain
foods, which God created to be received with
thanksgiving by those who believe and who know
the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and
nothing is to be rejected if it is received with
thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word
of God and prayer.
(MARK 9)
14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large
crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with
them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were
overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.
16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.
17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my
son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of
speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the
ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and
becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit,
but they could not.”
19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long
shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring
the boy to me.”
20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw
the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water
to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome
my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the
impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come
out of him and never enter him again.”
26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out.The boy
looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took
him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why
couldn’t we drive it out?”
29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer AND FASTING.[a]”

6. Disaster will come upon you,
and you will not know how
to conjure it away.
A calamity will fall upon you
that you cannot ward off
with a ransom;
a catastrophe you cannot
foresee
will suddenly come upon
you.
12 “Keep on, then, with your magic
spells
and with your many sorceries,
which you have labored at since
childhood.
Perhaps you will succeed,
perhaps you will cause terror.
13 All the counsel you have received has
only worn you out!
Let your astrologers come forward,
those stargazers who make predictions
month by month,
let them save you from what is
coming upon you.
14 Surely they are like stubble;
the fire will burn them up.
They cannot even save themselves
from the power of the flame.
These are not coals for warmth;
this is not a fire to sit by.
15 That is all they are to you—
these you have dealt with
and labored with since childhood.
All of them go on in their error;
there is not one that can save you.
7. tempts – Matt. 4:1
8. robs – Matt. 13:19
9. oppresses – 2 Cor. 12:7; Job 1 and 2
10. kill – John 8:44
11. use territorial spirits to carry out his
worldwide plan – Book of Daniel (will be
explained under study of territorial spirit)
1. Oppose the movement of the gospel – Luke 8:12
(prevents understanding); 2 Cor. 4:3-4 (blinds minds); 1
Thess. 2:18 – hinders progress of preachers
2. In the spiritual realm, he wages hand-to-hand combat
with the believer’s spirit – Eph. 6:10 ff
3. Slanders/accuses the brethren day and night – Rev. 12:10
4. Tempts into specific sins:
a. Hypocrisy and lying – Acts 5
b. Extra-marital sex – 1 Cor. 7:5 (…come together, so
that Satan may not tempt you…)
c. Occupation with worldly pursuits – 1 John 2:15-16,
5:19
d. Dependence on human strength – 1 Chron. 21:1-8;
Matt. 16:21-23
e. Spiritual pride and arrogance – 1Tim. 3:6
11. Divides the church – 2 Cor. 2:10-11 (“one of his
schemes”)
 11. Over-concern and discouragement – 1 Pet. 5:6-10
 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
that he may exalt you in due time.d7 Cast all your worries
(CARES, FEARS) upon him because he cares for you.e
 8 Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is
prowling around like a roaring lion looking for
[someone] to devour.f9Resist him, steadfast in faith,
knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world
undergo the same sufferings.
 10The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory
through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm,
strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a
little.g
 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which
would take account of his servants.
 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which
owed him ten thousand talents.
 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be
sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be
made.
 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord,
have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed
him, and forgave him the debt.
 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants,
which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took
him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying,
Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he
should pay the debt.
 31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very
sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
 32Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O
thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou
desiredst me:
 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy
fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to
the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due
unto him.
 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye
from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their
trespasses.
12. Sidetrack us from undivided attention and devotion to
God
2 CORTINTHIANS 11:
1 I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but
you are already doing that.
2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you
to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a
pure virgin to him.
3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the
serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led
astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other
than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different
spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from
the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
13. Incite persecution
Rev. 2:10 – “the Devil will put some of you in prison, and
you will suffer persecution”
13. Desires to gain a foothold (a leverage for control)
Eph. 4:26-27 (whole context of “foothold” is the life “you
used to live as Gentiles” and not just anger)
14. Infiltrates the church with heretical doctrine
 1Tim. 4:1-5 – false teachers
 1 John 4:1-4 – denying Christ
 Col. 2:18-23 – false lifestyles
15. Use ignorance and doctrinal immaturity to bring
believers in actual demonic fellowship
1 Cor. 10:20 – food offering to idols is koinonia with demons
17. Hinders prayer – Daniel 10
1. to Correct defection – 1Tim. 19-20
2. Correct unrestrained/unrepented immorality – 1
Cor. 5
3. for increase of faith and devotion – Job; 2 Cor. 12:7
4. Evil angels may have been used by Him in Ps. 78:49
5. Use evil spirits to deceive their own human servants
that He might destroy them
(Ahab’s case – 1 Kings 22:20-38)
6.When demons are cast out, God’s name is glorified –
Luke 10:17-19
7. They give occasion for the performance of signs and
wonders that confirm the Word (preaching) Mark 1:27
Just as there are degrees in the in-filling of the Holy Spirit,
we believe that there are different forms and degrees in the
demonization of individuals.These range from:
 1. “lying to the Holy Spirit” (Acts 5:1-3),
 2. being “bound” by a “spirit of infirmity” resulting in
physical sickness (Luke 13:10-16),
 3. being deceived (1Tim.4:1),
 4. to having powers of prediction of the future in a
socially accepted manner (Acts 16:16),
 5. being possessed by a demon resulting in mental
derangement and violent manners (Mark 5:1-5),
 6. acts constituting outright acts of betrayal of the Lord
Jesus Christ, as in the case of Judas (Luke 22:3, which
says that Satan entered into Judas).
 Names in Scriptures can be functional. From the Old
Testament to the New, names had meanings and
were often descriptive of people (Jacob, “he grabs the
heel; Matt.16:17 Simon Bar-jonah (“son of Jonah”,
etc.)
 Specific names used in the Bible:
-“lying spirit” - 1Kings 22:22, 23; 2 Ch. 18:20-22
-“spirit of fear” -2Tim.1:7
-“spirit of slumber (or stupor)”- Rom. 11:8
-“deaf and dumb spirit” -Mark 9:14
-“spirit of infirmity” -Luke 13:10
1. Dumb and mute spirit -
Mark 9:28, 29 – “… his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive
it out?’ He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by fasting and prayer.”
2. Daniel 10:12-13 – note that an angel of God, apparently lower in rank
than the principality demon
(“prince of Persia”) that intercepted him was detained for 21 days until he
was rescued by the Archangel Michael; the highest of angels, second to
Lucifer.
3. Ephesians 6:11-12 – “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take
your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh
and blood, but against the rulers (principalities), against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly realms.”
4. Jude 8 and 9 – Michael rebuked Lucifer by a higher power, “in the name
of the Lord”
YES!!! Implied in the following passages:
1. Eph. 6:12 - “For we wrestle not against flesh
and blood, but against powers, principalities, and
against the rulers of darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high place.”
2. Eph. 4:26-27 - “Be ye angry, and sin not:
let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither
give place to the devil.” (KJV) (“Do not give the
Devil a foothold.” (NIV)
1 Pet. 5:8, 9 - “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil
prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your
brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of
sufferings.”
 - here again, the context is lack of control of self and
lack of spiritual alertness, which is attributed to the Christian’s
own weakness; but the command to resist the Devil again implies
that our lack of self-control and sin can be used by the Devil for his
destructive and unrighteousness purposes;
 - if a Christian cannot be placed under the effective
control of a demonic power, why is there a constancy of warning
to be alert and watch out for the enemy?
 2 Cor. 11:3-4 -- “But I fear, lest by any means,
as the serpent beguiled Eve through his
subtlety,so your minds should be corrupted
from the simplicity that is in Christ.” (KJV)
“For if someone comes to you and preaches a
Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you
received a different spirit from the one you
received, or a different gospel from the one you
accepted, you put up with it easily enough.” (NIV)
 1Cor. 10:19-22 -- “What say I then?That the idol is
anything, or that which is offered to idols is anything?
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they
sacrifice to devils, and not to God, and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils.Ye cannot drink the cup
of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of
the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
Do we provoke the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than
he?” (KJV)
-Many Christians are known to be involved in animistic
practices such as animal sacrifices (“daga-daga”), which are
actually “offerings to demons”; this has resulted in severe
sicknesses that can hardly be cured by medicine, but were
cured by simple confession and renunciation; many
testimonies will bear this out.
 Luke 13:10-16 -here, a woman whom
Jesus called “a daughter of Abraham” (v. 11),
was afflicted, for 18 long years in which she
could not straighten up, by a spirit of
infirmity” (v.11), which Jesus also attributed
to Satan (v. 16).
 There are Biblical indications that Satan can put his
own thoughts in our own minds.Three examples:
1. Acts 5:1-11 – the lying of Ananias and Sapphira
 v. 3 “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your
heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…?”
 That Ananias and Sapphira were believers is indicated
by the use of the word “also” in v.1, in reference to
ch.4:32, “All the believers…” and v.36, (Joseph, who
was also a believer), and by the fact that the effect of
their death was “fear seized the whole church”
(ch.5:11), which would have been an unlikely reaction
if Ananias and Sapphira were unbelievers.
2. 1 Chron.21 – David’s counting or taking a census of the troops of Israel,
which resulted in the death of at least 70,000 Israelites (v. 14-15)
- in verse 1, David’s action was attributed to Satan who “provoked” (KJV)
or “incited” (NIV) David.
3. Matt. 16: 21-23 – Jesus telling his disciples that he will be taken captive,
suffer, and be crucified and raised to life again. Peter said “Never, Lord!”
v. 23 – “Then Jesus said, Get thee behind me, Satan!...”
- Jesus’s rebuke seemed too harsh for one who did not fully understand
God’s plan of salvation; it is unlikely that he meant it directly or personally to
Peter; it is more likely that Satan sought to prevent the Lord’s plans through
Peter, making Peter his tool; this is likely because in Luke 4:13, we read:
“When the Devil had finished tempting him, he left him until an opportune
time.”: so the rebuke of Jesus must have been meant for Satan, but was
directed at Peter who was being used by Satan.
ISSUE OF DESIRES
1Tim. 5:11-15 – Paul’s advice to young widows
 v. 14-15 – “So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children,
to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for
slander. “Some have in fact already turned away to follow
Satan.”
 - that these young widows were Christians is indicated by v. 11
that describe them as those whose “sensual desires overcome
their dedication to Christ” (NIV); they were described not only as
having been overcome by the flesh, but also as having followed
Satan. It is notable that what began as being overcome by the
flesh ended up with following Satan.A very strong indication that
our own sins can be demonized.
PERSISTENT DISOBEDIENCE
1Cor. 5:5 – the immoral brother who refused to repent “was handed over
to Satan” “ for the destruction of his flesh” but “his spirit saved on the
day of the Lord.”
1Tim. 1:19, 20 – “…some… have shipwrecked the faith.Among them are
Hymnenaeus andAlexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be
taught not to blaspheme.”
- “Warnings of the NewTestament that Christians can become partly bound
or controlled by Satan are very vivid. Paul cautions the potential
demonization of bishops, elders, and pastors (1Tim. 3:6-7), Bible teachers,
preachers, and prophets (2 Cor. 11:3-4, 13-15; 1Tim. 1:19-20 with 2Tim. 2:14-
26; 1Tim.4:1; 1John4:1-4) …”
- SpiritualWarfare Handbook, by Dr. Ed Murphy, p. 432 (the book is strongly
endorsed by Dr. Mark Bubeck of the Baptist Conservative Seminary)
 Rom. 14:10 – each one will give an account of
himself to God;
 Ezek. 18:20 – the soul who sins is the one who
will die;
 1 Cor. 10-12 – let him who thinks he stands take
heed lest he fall;
 Galatians 6:1-5 – each one should watch
himself and test his own actions;
 1Cor. 11:28 – each one should examine
himself
 Col. 3:5-10 – put to death whatever belongs to
your earthly nature…)
- he began well (1 Sam. 8:5)
- elected by God’s sovereign choice (9:15-16, 10:1)
- he was made “another man” (10:6)
- was given a “new heart” (10:9)
- the Spirit of God came upon him mightily (10:6, 10)
- he even prophesied under the power of God’s spirit (10:10)
- he however had a problem with jealousy (he was jealous of David) “foothold” Eph. 4:27
- first, he was given over to depression, then to destructiveness, attempting to kill even his
own
 son, then David (1Sam. 16, 18, 19 ff.)
- then he slips into mediumistic practice (1Sam.28) (He had “fellowship with demons”
1Cor. 10:20, 21)
because he aroused the Lord’s anger and jealousy (1Cor. 10:22), he was sentenced to
death, and died in battle
 This is also indicated by what happened to King Solomon
he was the one who brought foreign gods into Israel and publicly sanctioned their worship;
many of these gods and goddesses were sexual idols;
If 1Cor. 10:20 is literal – that worshipping idols is actually having actual fellowship with
demons, it is not difficult to explain why Solomon was overcome with lust in his life having 300
wives and 700 concubines; he was demonized, or energized by demons
Separate us from the love of God – Rom. 8:37 ff;
Col. 2:15; Heb. 13:5
 Luke 10:19 I have given you authority to trample on
snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power
of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
 Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan
under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with
you.
 Romans 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels
nor demons . . . will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
 James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you.
 Ephesians 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and
seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ
Jesus,
 Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you
can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
 1 John 3:8 . . .The reason the Son of God appeared was to
destroy the devil‘s work.
 Mark 6:7 . . . Calling theTwelve to him, he sent them out
two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.
 Luke 10:17The seventy-two returned with joy and said,
“Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
 Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in
heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in
heaven.
 11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so
that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to
the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of
them. 13 Then some of the ITINERANT JEWISH EXORCISTS took
it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over
those who had evil spirits, saying, “We[a] exorcise you by the
Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of
Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
 15 ANDTHE EVIL SPIRIT ANSWERED AND
SAID, “JESUS I KNOW, AND PAUL I KNOW;
BUT WHO AREYOU?”
 16Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them,
overpowered[b]them, and prevailed against them,[c] so that
they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became
known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear
fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
1. ACCEPTTHATWE ARE SINNERS – Romans
3:23, Romans 3:10
2. ACCEPTTHATWE ARE WORTHY OF DEATH
BECAUSE OF OUR SINS; CONFESS OUR
SINS – Romans 6:23a, I John 1:9
3. ACKNOWLEDGEWHAT JESUS DID FOR US
ONTHE CROSS – John 3:16, I John 5:10,
Ephesians 2:8-10
4. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS OUR LORD AND
PERSONAL SAVIOR – John 1:12
5. INVITE HIMTO COME IN AND REIGN AND
RULE IN OUR LIFE – Revelations 3:20
 9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus
as Lord, and believe in your heart that God
raised Him from the dead, you will be
saved; 10for with the heart a person
believes, resulting in righteousness, and
with the mouth he confesses, resulting in
salvation. 11For the Scripture says,
"WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT
BE DISAPPOINTED."…
 Colossians 2:15 says, "AND HAVING SPOILED
PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS, HE MADE A SHEW OF
THEM OPENLY,TRIUMPHING OVERTHEM IN IT." The
archaic meaning of the word "spoiled" here is "to plunder;
despoil" (American Heritage Dictionary).
 This means that after Jesus defeated Satan, He stripped
him of everything he had, specifically the keys of death
and hell (Rev. 1:18). Satan has no power to imprison
anyone.
 The Greek word that was translated "shew" in this verse
(Col 2:15) is "deigmatizo" which means "to exhibit"
(Strong). This comes from the root word "deigma" which
means "a specimen (as shown)" (ibid.).
 The Greek word that was translated "triumphing over" in
Colossians 2:15 is especially significant. It means "to make an
acclamatory procession" (ibid.).This is specifically referring to the
way the Romans had a "triumphant procession" after they had
defeated their enemies.
 Upon conquering an enemy, the Romans would hold a parade.
They would take the conquered king, strip him naked, and drag
him through the crowd behind the conquering king or commander
for all their subjects to see. He would be humiliated and insulted,
but that's not all. They would also cut off the thumbs of his hands
and the big toes of both feet. This was to assure the subjects this
enemy would never be a threat to any of them again. He could not
hold a sword and he would never be able to run again. There was
no need to fear him any more. Any rumor about him ever
challenging Rome again would be scoffed at because the citizens
had seen him in the parade.
.
 All Christians have authority in Christ, but power is exercised more fully
and victoriously by those who are inwardly prepared, properly guided,
and spiritually aggressive.
 Example: policeman’s badge, whistle and gun is authority.
 It is power when it is actually used.
 Eph. 3:10
 Matt. 11:12 The effectivity of the policeman no longer depends on his
badge, whistle and gun (that is presumed sufficient). It depends on his
integrity, training and skill.
 In the Christian life, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the spiritual
armour of Ephesians 6, like the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of
God. It now depends on the user.
 In other words, we must be stronger than the strongman. Matt. 12:29
Psalm 139
 23 Search me, O
God, and know
my heart; test me
and know my
anxious thoughts.
 24 See if there is
any offensive
(wicked, unclean)
way in me, and
lead me in the
way everlasting.

 Cure by faith healers
 (note: the demonic anointing of faith healers is especially potent; in the same way that the
anointing of the Holy Spirit in the O.T. was physically transferred/manifested by the anointing of
oil, human agents of demon powers have also their potions and oils… one especially on whom
potions/oils of faith healers are applied can and will be demonized)

 Prov. 16:32 – 32He who is
slow to anger is better
than the mighty, And he
who rules his spirit, than
he who captures a city.
 Prov. 25:28 A man without
self-control is like a city
broken into and left
without walls.
(Example: criminal elements
operating in the city)
1. EMOTIONS
-- FEELING, FOOTHOLD, STRONGHOLD,
COMPULSION, DEMONIZATION
(EASIEST: FEAR,WORRY, ANXIETY)
2. MIND – doubt, unbelief, procrastination,
compromise
3.TONGUE – gossip, backbiting, criticising, cursing
4. SEX
5. APPETITE – food (addiction comes from
frustration)
6. FINANCES
7. LEISURE etc. etc. etc.
 Daniel 2:28
"However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He
has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the
latter daysThis was your dream and the visions in your mind while on
your bed.
 Daniel 2:47
The king answered Daniel and said, "Surely your God is a God of gods
and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since you have been
able to reveal this mystery."
 Job 12:22
"He reveals mysteries from the darkness And brings the deep
darkness into light.
 Daniel 2:22
"It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows
what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him.
 If the person is relieved/delivered:
 Do counselling (as may be required) and:
 Pray for sealing if he/she is a Christian
 Lead him to Christ if he is a non-Christian,
then pray for sealing
 Some questions of reality and procedure:
 Conversation with demons? Instant exit? Luke 8:26 ff
 Demons have names? Names in scriptures functional
 “spirit of fear”, “spirit of stupor”, etc.
 “deaf and dumb spirit” – Mark 9:14
 “manifestations”? – Mark 9 – foaming at the mouth, convulsion
 “out, through the mouth!” – Mark 9 (although no specific
command, there can be no objection to it – “ask anything in my
name”…)
 Trust and abide in Jesus, the Stronger than the
strongman
 Always led by the Spirit
 Humility (James 4:6-8)
 Armour of God – Eph. 6
 Life of fasting and prayer
 Work with a team

 Taken from Scriptures
 Matt. 22:29 – “You are in error because you do not
know the scriptures or the power of God.”

 Aren’t demons supposed to come out
instantaneously when you command them go
out?
 In Luke 8:26, Jesus had commanded the evil
spirit to come out of the man, but the demons
tried to negotiate, so to speak, with Jesus,
“begging him repeatedly” (implying not an
instantaneous exit immediately upon Jesus’
command in this instance) “not to order them to
go into the Abyss”
 Mark 9:25, "When Jesus saw that the people
came running together, he rebuked the foul
spirit, saying unto him,Thou dumb and deaf
spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter
no more into him."
 Mark 5:8, "For he said unto him, Come out of
the man, thou unclean spirit."
 Luke 4:33-35, "And in the synagogue there was
a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil,
and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us
alone; what have we to do with thee, thou
Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy
us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of
God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy
peace, and come out of him. And when the
devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out
of him, and hurt him not."
 Physical manifestations during deliverance; vomiting,
kicking, seizures, crying out in a loud voice, etc.
 In an encounter between Jesus and evil spirits, these
manifestations are not surprising:
 Mark 9:14-26 In the healing of a boy with the evil spirit:
“when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy
into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth.”
 Mark 1:25-26 “the unclean spirit cried out in a loud voice,
and came out of him”
Mark 1:25-26 Jesus said, “Be quiet, and come out of
him!” And “the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice, and
came out of him.”
1. Humble yourself – admit you have a
problem (choose between your dignity and
deliverance; let go of dignity and go for
deliverance, you will get back your dignity
later)
2. TRUTH – SETYOU FREE; ADMITTHE
TRUTH
3. CONFESS –
4. REPENT
5. Forgive others
- Soak in HisWord
- Soak in worship
- Soak in prayer
- Walk and live in
the Spirit
- Be filled with the
Spirit
- Grow in grace and
in the knowledge
of the Lord
- Keep short
accounts with God
The HOLY SPIRIT (RUACH HAKODESH) IS THE BREATH OF LIFE…

Warfare Against Demons Part 3

  • 1. SpiritualWarfare – Lesson 3, PART 1 NIHOP, May 2015
  • 2. I. WARFARE AGAINST THE FLESH – Desires- deeds (acts) – foothold – stronghold Any stronghold is immediately an open gate to the enemy II. WARFARE AGAINST THE WORLD Satanic control Sinful control Operating on the dynamics of “lust of the flesh,” “lust of the eyes” and “pride of life” MAIN POINT: WE MUST WINTHEWAR AGAINST THE FLESH, AND AGAINSTTHEWORLD IN OUR PERSONAL LIFE, BEFOREWE HOPE TO ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITHTHE EVIL SPIRITWORLD
  • 3. 10 ”Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes (strategies). 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities (principalities), against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God,so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
  • 4. - (Seraphs) Ministers to God Who sits on HisThrone - (Cherubs) Enforces God orders directly from the Throne - (Thrones/Rulers) Ruling angels under whose command are companies of angels (like extension offices) - (Dominions/Principalities) are like army detachments (of angels) in charge of areas - (Powers) are angels with specific skills (ex., healing, worship, understanding, miracles, etc.

  • 13. SATAN’S ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE 2 Cor.4:3-4, Eph. 2:1-2 1) Satan (cherub level): The devil was originally a cherub, first in rank among the elect angels, 2) Thrones (elder level): These "kings" are apparently the heads of Satan's world-wide network for administering his "kingdom of this world" (Rev.11:15). 3) Princes (archangel level): These are the sarim discussed under archangel above. Daniel 10:13 and 10:20-21 mention the "prince of Persia" and the "prince of Greece", 4) Authorities (authority level): This is the only rank level for which there is apparently no additional or alternative name among the fallen angels. 5) World-rulers (power level): These are the demon equivalent to the dynameis or "powers". 6) (spirit level): This is both the rank and file of fallen angels and the common name by which all of them are described. Known by a variety of names, 7) demons
  • 14.  We are also told that one third of an “innumerable company of angels” (Hebrews 12:22) chose to rebel with him. John saw this great wonder in heaven, “…an enormous red dragon…His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth…the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him” (Revelation 12:3-9). Since Satan is referred to as a star which fell or was cast down to earth, and Revelation 12:4 says a third of the stars were cast out with him, then the conclusion is that the stars in Revelation 12 refer to fallen angels, fully one third of the heavenly host. If the one-third number is in fact accurate, what assurance that is!Two thirds of the angels are still on God's side, and for followers of Christ, they are on our side as well.
  • 15.  Chief Kings and Chief Princes, command  Kings and Princes who rule various geographical and spiritual areas.  There are kingdoms, principalities, dominions and powers which are administered by Kings and Princes. Each state in the United states is ruled over by a prince.  A General is in charge of a Legion (6,000)  Prince will control a number of Legions.  A Ruler or Captain commands a Cohort (600),  there can be Chief Captains and Chief Rulers with still more authority.  A Centurion controls 100 demons;  if he controls less than a hundred demons he is called a Strongman.
  • 16. “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities (principalities), against the powers OFTHIS DARK WORLD and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
  • 17. WE WILL STUDYTHE HIGHER RANKS IN OUR NEXT LESSONS, BUT FORTHIS LESSON WE FOCUS ON DEMONS AND HOWTHEY ARE DEFEATED IN CHRIST AND BY US IN CHRIST
  • 18. Greek etymology – DAEMON – a supernatural being, a god-like being, with natures both human and deity  the Greek form, translated “devil” in the King JamesVersion of the NewTestament  Demons are spoken of as spiritual beings (Matt. 8:16; 10:1; 12:43- 45) at enmity with God, and as having a certain power over man (James 2:19; Rev. 16:14).  They recognize our Lord as the Son of God (Matt. 8:20; Luke 4:41). They belong to the number of those angels that “kept not their first estate,” “unclean spirits,” “fallen angels,” the angels of the devil (Matt. 25:41; Rev. 12:7-9).They are the “principalities and powers” against which we must “wrestle” (Eph. 6:12).  The word demon(s) does not appear in the King James Bible, which uses the word “devils” instead. The New King James Bible uses the word “demon(s)” in 72 verses.  Do all demons (devils) fear the one true God?Yes. (James 2:19)
  • 19. Wickedness in the World  6 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”  4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward— when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.  5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
  • 20. 1. One theory says the “sons of God” in Genesis 6 refer to the godly line of Seth (believers of God) inter-married with the ungodly line of Cain (daughters of men) PROBLEM: This cannot explain the NEPHILIMS, or the giants 2. Another theory says the “sons of God” refer to ANGELIC BEINGS…
  • 21.  Job 1:6: “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.”  Here we find that the sons of God were angels, and Satan is numbered among them. The sons of God are mentioned also in chapter 38:7 (KJV): When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
  • 22. 1. In the NewTestament, born-again believers in Christ are called the children of God or the sons of God (Luke 3:38, John 1:12, Romans 8:14, 1John 3:1). Dr. Bullinger in the Companion Bible states: "It is only by the divine specific act of creation that any created being can be called 'a son of God.'"This explains why every born-again believer is a son of God. 2. Adam was a son of God. Adam was specifically created by God, "in the likeness of God made He him" (Genesis 5:1). Adam's descendants, however, were different; they were not made in God's likeness but in Adam's. Adam "begat a son in his own likeness, after his image" (Genesis 5:3). Adam was a "son of God," but Adam's descendants were "sons of men." 3. "In the OldTestament terminology angels are called sons of God while men are called servants of God. In the NewTestament this is reversed. Angels are the servants and Christians are the sons ofGod."  As for the use of the term in Genesis 6, since it cannot possibly refer to Adam nor believers in Christ, we conclude that it has to refer to the angels whom God had created.
  • 23. “BENE ELOHIM” - BEN – SON; bene – sons ELOHIM – GOD “Sons of God” REFER TO ANGELS WHO HAD AUTHORITY TO RULETHE UNIVERSE ANDTHE EARTH WITH GOD “5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord[c] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.”
  • 24. “1 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.” 4The Nephilim were on the earth INTHOSE DAYS— and ALSO AFTERWARD—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.”
  • 25.  Notice that the Nephilim were on the earth in those days. Those days were the days preceding the flood. However, Genesis also says that they were on the earth afterward. In other words, they were on the earth after the flood. Genesis 7:21 says that all mankind perished in the flood, so HOW COULDTHEY HAVE SURVIVEDTHE FLOOD?  There is only one explanation: THEY REMAINED ONTHE EARTH INTHE FORM OF DISEMBODIED SPIRITS.
  • 26.  Someone might say, "Wait a minute, there were also giants during the days of David. Goliath was a giant, so Moses was referring to the giants in David’s day." Moses could not be referring to the giants in David’s day because Moses had long died before David. So he could not have been writing about Goliath.  Someone might say, "There were giants in the promise land during the days of Moses."  No there weren’t. It was the rebels who declared that there were giants in the promised land.  "...All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim)... (Numbers 13:32-33)
  • 27.
  • 28.
  • 29.  Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can never die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection. (Luke 20:34-37)  The way Luke puts the words of Christ, humans will be like the angels because they can never die, not because they can never marry. However, the way Matthew constructs the sentence, it appears different:  At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. (Matthew 22:30)  "You see," someone may argue, "angels can’t marry, so the sons of God could not refer to angels because the sons of God married."  Before someone debates this point, they should take note that only the angels in heaven don’t marry. There is no mentioned about the angels who were cast out of heaven.
  • 30.  An incubus is a demon in male form who, according to mythological and legendary traditions, lies upon sleepers, especially women, in order to engage in sexual activity with them. Its female counterpart is the succubus. An incubus may pursue sexual relations with a woman in order to father a child, as in the legend of Merlin.[1] Religious tradition holds that repeated sexual activity with an incubus or succubus may result in the deterioration of health, or even death.[2]
  • 31. THE WATCHERS Significantly, the Book of Enoch (like the Genesis Apocryphon) refers to these "sons of God" as Watchers.  A term, as already noted, found in the Book of Daniel. (5) Why this particular word should be used, we are not told; possibly because part of their function was to keep vigil. R.H.C. Charles, who translates the word "watchers" as "the angels, the children of heaven," obviously believed they referred to one and the same beings. The Book of Enoch alleges that two hundred of these Watchers descended to Earth in the days of Jared (Genesis 5:18), and some of them are given names. The worst one of all is called Azazel. The name occurs in other Jewish documents, like the Apocalypse of Abraham. Azazel is accused of having "scattered over the earth the secrets of heaven and hath rebelled against the MightyOne." His name is also found in ancient Jewish ritual concerning the Day of Atonement.
  • 32. On that day, the iniquities of the people of Israel were laid on the scapegoat, and then the scapegoat was driven away "to Azazel, to the wilderness" (Leviticus 16). Azazel was a demon who inhabited a region in the Judean wilderness. There is an interesting aside on Azazel in a brilliant essay by Dr. Jacob Z. Lauterbach explaining certain "stray references to the activity of Satan onYom Kippur."The ritual of that day, said Lauterbach, sought to negate Satan's efforts in three ways:The Azazel sacrifice to appease him; the smoke of the incense to drive him away; and the white robes of the High Priest, so different from his usual vestments, a disguise to mislead him. (6) In the Book ofJubilees a different reason is given as to why the Watchers came to Earth. It was in order "to instruct the children of men and to bring about justice and equity on the Earth." However, the story ends in the same way: instead of instigating justice and equity, they lusted after the women of Earth, and merited the full judgment of God.
  • 33. Book of the Wars of the Lord Numbers 21:14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord,What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon, Certain sources believe that this is to be found by drawing text from several Old Testament books. There are no authoritative sources for this text. Book of Jasher Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 2 Samuel 1:18 (Also he bade them teach the children ofJudah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.) The Manner of the Kingdom / Book of Statutes 1 Samuel 10:25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.  Prophecy of Abijah 2 Chronicles 9:29 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat?  Story of Prophet Iddo 2 Chronicles 13:22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.
  • 35.  Visions of Iddo the Seer 2 Chronicles 9:29 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat?  Iddo Genealogies 2 Chronicles 12:15 Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book ofShemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.  Book of Jehu 2 Chronicles 20:34 Now the rest of the acts ofJehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book ofJehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.  Sayings of the Seers Here 2 Chronicles 33:19 His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his sin, and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.  Book of Enoch Here Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,  Book of Gad the Seer 1 Chronicles 29:29 Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
  • 36.  Acts of Uziah 2 Chronicles 26:22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write.  The Annals of King David 1 Chronicles 27:24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish.Wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering, and the number was not entered in the book of the annals of King David.
  • 38.  It became generally accepted that incubi and succubi were the same demon, able to switch between male and female forms.[9] A succubus would be able to sleep with a man and collect his sperm, and then transform into an incubus and use that seed on women. Even though sperm and egg came from humans originally, the spirits' offspring were often thought of as supernatural.[10]  Though many tales claim that the incubus is bisexual,[11] others indicate that it is strictly heterosexual and finds attacking a male victim either unpleasant or detrimental.[12]
  • 39.
  • 40. These are also called FAMILIAR SPIRITS which are actually demons.
  • 41.  Leviticus 19:31;20:6,27; and Deuteronomy 18:9-14refer to “mediums and familiar spirits” and forbids being involved with them, as they are an abomination to the Lord. A medium is one who acts as a liaison to supposedly contact or communicate with the dead on behalf of the living. In reality mediums are contacting demons who convince the mediums that they are “familiar” and can be trusted and believed. The practices associated with mediums and familiar spirits were banned in Israel, and the punishment for practicing such things was death.  NOTE; LUKE 16 –THERE IS NO CROSSING OFTHE DIVIDE BETWEENTHE ETERNAL STATES AND EARTH
  • 42.  Heb. 1:1414 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?  Psalm 91:10 “No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent. 11For He will give His angels charge concerning you,To guard you in all your ways. 12They will bear you up in their hands,That you do not strike your foot against a stone.…”
  • 43.  Enoch is instructed by the Most High to deliver this warning to the Watchers:  "Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness, go, declare to the watchers of heaven, who have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves with women, and have done as the children of earth do, and have taken unto themselves wives: 'Ye have wrought great destruction on the earth: And ye shall have no peace nor forgiveness of sin.'"  These same Watchers in turn approached Enoch to mediate on their behalf, and to write out a petition in their favor.  God, however, rejects the petition and Enoch is summoned to speak to the Watchers again:  "Go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent thee to intercede for them: 'Ye should intercede for men, and not men for you. Wherefore have ye left high, holy and eternal heaven, and lain with women and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men, and taken wives unto yourselves and done like the child of earth and begotten giants as sons. And although ye were holy, spiritual living and eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and have begotten children with the blood of flesh, have lusted after flesh and blood as those who do die and perish.'"
  • 44.  And as for the giants or Nephilim produced by them:  "The giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth...Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holyWatchers is their beginning and primal origin...And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth...  And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them...thus shall they destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgment in which the age shall be consummated over theWatchers and the godless, yea, shall be wholly consummated. And now as to theWatchers... say to them therefore: 'Ye have no peace.'"  Such was the message given to Enoch, who transmitted it to the Watchers and their progeny on Earth.
  • 45.  When Jesus cast out the Legions from the man of Gadara, the demons cried out to Jesus, "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" (Matthew 8:29).  There is an appointed time for their punishment. It is not now. So we must still deal with demon spirits.
  • 46. 1. Demons are DISEMBODIED SPIRITS 2. They are the SPIRITS of the PRODUCTS OFTHE UNION OFTHE FALLEN ANGELS OF GENESIS 6 WITH WOMEN OFTHOSE DAYS 3. They produced NEPHILIMS AND GIANTS 4. They BECAME DISEMBODIED (LOSTTHEIR HUMAN BODY HABITATIONS) DURINGTHE FLOOD AND WHEN DAVID KILLEDTHE ANAKITES 5. THEY ARE STILL ON EARTH 6. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR BODIES TO POSSESS 7. THEY ARE PROPERLY CALLED DEMONS OR FAMILIAR SPIRITS
  • 47. 1. Demons are SPIRITSWHO LOSTTHEIR BODIES AND ARE LOOKING FOR BODIESTO POSSESS Fallen angels HAVETHEIR CELESTIAL BODIES 2. Demons NEED HUMAN BODIESTO EXPRESS THEMSELVES; FALLEN ANGELS HAVE NO SUCH NEEDS 3. Demons just “walk” (Matt. 12:43, “When the unclean spirit comes out of the man, he walks through arid places, seeking rest, and finding none, then he says I will return to the house came out of… and takes with him seven more spirits more wicked than himself…” Fallen angels fly
  • 48. 1. You cast out demons, but you pray to God for Him to deal with the fallen angels, just like Daniel did in Daniel 10. 2. The ORIGIN OF DEMONS – DISEMBODIED SPIRITS, is SEXUAL SIN (SEX BETWEEN ANGELS AND HUMANS). Demons are sex-hungry. They gravitate towards sex. ILLICIT SEX OPENS US UPTO DEMONS. --This might explain why the mad man of Gerasenes was naked, and when the demons left him, he clothed himself (Mark 5:15). --This why Mary of Magdalene—through being a prostitute—had opened herself to seven demons (Mark 16:9). Sexual perversion opens the door to demons.
  • 49. “15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." 17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.” WHY? HOW? BECAUSE HE BRINGS IN A SPIRIT IN HIS OWN BODY
  • 50. DEMONS ARE EARTH-BOUND, DISEMBODIED SPIRITS, ARETHE FOOT SOLDIERS OF SATAN (HIS GROUNDTROOPS). They are the GROUND IMPLEMENTORS OF SATAN’SAGENDA AGAINST US…. (but CHRIST ALREADY BROKE SATAN’S HEAD ATTHE CROSS…)
  • 51. 1. INFLICT DISEASESOR INABILITIES – Matt. 9:33 Jesus Heals the Blind and Mute 27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. 29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you"; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. 32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."
  • 52. Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon  5 uThey came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.1 2 And when Jesus2 had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 vHe lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and wfell down before him. 7 And xcrying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, ySon of zthe Most High God? aI adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “MY NAME IS BLEGION, FORWE ARE MANY.” 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
  • 53. MARK 1  21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”  25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.  27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
  • 54. 1Timothy 4  4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
  • 55. (MARK 9) 14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.” 19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
  • 56. 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out.The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer AND FASTING.[a]”

Perhaps you will succeed, perhaps you will cause terror. 13 All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. 14 Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. These are not coals for warmth; this is not a fire to sit by. 15 That is all they are to you— these you have dealt with and labored with since childhood. All of them go on in their error; there is not one that can save you.

  • 66. Just as there are degrees in the in-filling of the Holy Spirit, we believe that there are different forms and degrees in the demonization of individuals. These range from:  1. “lying to the Holy Spirit” (Acts 5:1-3),  2. being “bound” by a “spirit of infirmity” resulting in physical sickness (Luke 13:10-16),  3. being deceived (1Tim.4:1),  4. to having powers of prediction of the future in a socially accepted manner (Acts 16:16),  5. being possessed by a demon resulting in mental derangement and violent manners (Mark 5:1-5),  6. acts constituting outright acts of betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ, as in the case of Judas (Luke 22:3, which says that Satan entered into Judas).
  • 67.  Names in Scriptures can be functional. From the Old Testament to the New, names had meanings and were often descriptive of people (Jacob, “he grabs the heel; Matt.16:17 Simon Bar-jonah (“son of Jonah”, etc.)  Specific names used in the Bible: -“lying spirit” - 1Kings 22:22, 23; 2 Ch. 18:20-22 -“spirit of fear” -2Tim.1:7 -“spirit of slumber (or stupor)”- Rom. 11:8 -“deaf and dumb spirit” -Mark 9:14 -“spirit of infirmity” -Luke 13:10
  • 68. 1. Dumb and mute spirit - Mark 9:28, 29 – “… his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by fasting and prayer.” 2. Daniel 10:12-13 – note that an angel of God, apparently lower in rank than the principality demon (“prince of Persia”) that intercepted him was detained for 21 days until he was rescued by the Archangel Michael; the highest of angels, second to Lucifer. 3. Ephesians 6:11-12 – “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers (principalities), against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” 4. Jude 8 and 9 – Michael rebuked Lucifer by a higher power, “in the name of the Lord”
  • 69. YES!!! Implied in the following passages: 1. Eph. 6:12 - “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against powers, principalities, and against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high place.” 2. Eph. 4:26-27 - “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.” (KJV) (“Do not give the Devil a foothold.” (NIV)
  • 70. 1 Pet. 5:8, 9 - “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”  - here again, the context is lack of control of self and lack of spiritual alertness, which is attributed to the Christian’s own weakness; but the command to resist the Devil again implies that our lack of self-control and sin can be used by the Devil for his destructive and unrighteousness purposes;  - if a Christian cannot be placed under the effective control of a demonic power, why is there a constancy of warning to be alert and watch out for the enemy?
  • 71.  2 Cor. 11:3-4 -- “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety,so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” (KJV) “For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you received a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.” (NIV)
  • 72.  1Cor. 10:19-22 -- “What say I then? That the idol is anything, or that which is offered to idols is anything? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God, and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?” (KJV) -Many Christians are known to be involved in animistic practices such as animal sacrifices (“daga-daga”), which are actually “offerings to demons”; this has resulted in severe sicknesses that can hardly be cured by medicine, but were cured by simple confession and renunciation; many testimonies will bear this out.
  • 73.  Luke 13:10-16 -here, a woman whom Jesus called “a daughter of Abraham” (v. 11), was afflicted, for 18 long years in which she could not straighten up, by a spirit of infirmity” (v.11), which Jesus also attributed to Satan (v. 16).
  • 74.  There are Biblical indications that Satan can put his own thoughts in our own minds.Three examples: 1. Acts 5:1-11 – the lying of Ananias and Sapphira  v. 3 “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…?”  That Ananias and Sapphira were believers is indicated by the use of the word “also” in v.1, in reference to ch.4:32, “All the believers…” and v.36, (Joseph, who was also a believer), and by the fact that the effect of their death was “fear seized the whole church” (ch.5:11), which would have been an unlikely reaction if Ananias and Sapphira were unbelievers.
  • 75. 2. 1 Chron.21 – David’s counting or taking a census of the troops of Israel, which resulted in the death of at least 70,000 Israelites (v. 14-15) - in verse 1, David’s action was attributed to Satan who “provoked” (KJV) or “incited” (NIV) David. 3. Matt. 16: 21-23 – Jesus telling his disciples that he will be taken captive, suffer, and be crucified and raised to life again. Peter said “Never, Lord!” v. 23 – “Then Jesus said, Get thee behind me, Satan!...” - Jesus’s rebuke seemed too harsh for one who did not fully understand God’s plan of salvation; it is unlikely that he meant it directly or personally to Peter; it is more likely that Satan sought to prevent the Lord’s plans through Peter, making Peter his tool; this is likely because in Luke 4:13, we read: “When the Devil had finished tempting him, he left him until an opportune time.”: so the rebuke of Jesus must have been meant for Satan, but was directed at Peter who was being used by Satan.
  • 76. ISSUE OF DESIRES 1Tim. 5:11-15 – Paul’s advice to young widows  v. 14-15 – “So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. “Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.”  - that these young widows were Christians is indicated by v. 11 that describe them as those whose “sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ” (NIV); they were described not only as having been overcome by the flesh, but also as having followed Satan. It is notable that what began as being overcome by the flesh ended up with following Satan.A very strong indication that our own sins can be demonized.
  • 77. PERSISTENT DISOBEDIENCE 1Cor. 5:5 – the immoral brother who refused to repent “was handed over to Satan” “ for the destruction of his flesh” but “his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.” 1Tim. 1:19, 20 – “…some… have shipwrecked the faith.Among them are Hymnenaeus andAlexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.” - “Warnings of the NewTestament that Christians can become partly bound or controlled by Satan are very vivid. Paul cautions the potential demonization of bishops, elders, and pastors (1Tim. 3:6-7), Bible teachers, preachers, and prophets (2 Cor. 11:3-4, 13-15; 1Tim. 1:19-20 with 2Tim. 2:14- 26; 1Tim.4:1; 1John4:1-4) …” - SpiritualWarfare Handbook, by Dr. Ed Murphy, p. 432 (the book is strongly endorsed by Dr. Mark Bubeck of the Baptist Conservative Seminary)

  • 79. - he began well (1 Sam. 8:5) - elected by God’s sovereign choice (9:15-16, 10:1) - he was made “another man” (10:6) - was given a “new heart” (10:9) - the Spirit of God came upon him mightily (10:6, 10) - he even prophesied under the power of God’s spirit (10:10) - he however had a problem with jealousy (he was jealous of David) “foothold” Eph. 4:27 - first, he was given over to depression, then to destructiveness, attempting to kill even his own  son, then David (1Sam. 16, 18, 19 ff.) - then he slips into mediumistic practice (1Sam.28) (He had “fellowship with demons” 1Cor. 10:20, 21) because he aroused the Lord’s anger and jealousy (1Cor. 10:22), he was sentenced to death, and died in battle  This is also indicated by what happened to King Solomon he was the one who brought foreign gods into Israel and publicly sanctioned their worship; many of these gods and goddesses were sexual idols; If 1Cor. 10:20 is literal – that worshipping idols is actually having actual fellowship with demons, it is not difficult to explain why Solomon was overcome with lust in his life having 300 wives and 700 concubines; he was demonized, or energized by demons

Calling theTwelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.  Luke 10:17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”  Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
  • 85.  11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the ITINERANT JEWISH EXORCISTS took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We[a] exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.  15 ANDTHE EVIL SPIRIT ANSWERED AND SAID, “JESUS I KNOW, AND PAUL I KNOW; BUT WHO AREYOU?”  16Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered[b]them, and prevailed against them,[c] so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

  • 87.  9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."…
  • 88.  Colossians 2:15 says, "AND HAVING SPOILED PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS, HE MADE A SHEW OF THEM OPENLY,TRIUMPHING OVERTHEM IN IT." The archaic meaning of the word "spoiled" here is "to plunder; despoil" (American Heritage Dictionary).  This means that after Jesus defeated Satan, He stripped him of everything he had, specifically the keys of death and hell (Rev. 1:18). Satan has no power to imprison anyone.  The Greek word that was translated "shew" in this verse (Col 2:15) is "deigmatizo" which means "to exhibit" (Strong). This comes from the root word "deigma" which means "a specimen (as shown)" (ibid.).
  • 89.  The Greek word that was translated "triumphing over" in Colossians 2:15 is especially significant. It means "to make an acclamatory procession" (ibid.).This is specifically referring to the way the Romans had a "triumphant procession" after they had defeated their enemies.  Upon conquering an enemy, the Romans would hold a parade. They would take the conquered king, strip him naked, and drag him through the crowd behind the conquering king or commander for all their subjects to see. He would be humiliated and insulted, but that's not all. They would also cut off the thumbs of his hands and the big toes of both feet. This was to assure the subjects this enemy would never be a threat to any of them again. He could not hold a sword and he would never be able to run again. There was no need to fear him any more. Any rumor about him ever challenging Rome again would be scoffed at because the citizens had seen him in the parade. .
  • 90.  All Christians have authority in Christ, but power is exercised more fully and victoriously by those who are inwardly prepared, properly guided, and spiritually aggressive.  Example: policeman’s badge, whistle and gun is authority.  It is power when it is actually used.  Eph. 3:10  Matt. 11:12 The effectivity of the policeman no longer depends on his badge, whistle and gun (that is presumed sufficient). It depends on his integrity, training and skill.  In the Christian life, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the spiritual armour of Ephesians 6, like the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. It now depends on the user.  In other words, we must be stronger than the strongman. Matt. 12:29
