i. The UK sustainability standards for biogas consist of greenhouse gas emissions and land criteria. Facilities must demonstrate at least a 60% reduction in GHG emissions compared to fossil fuels and not use biomass from areas with high biodiversity or carbon stock. ii. Reporting of sustainability is required from April 2015 for biogas and biomethane facilities of all scales. Non-waste biomass shipments must meet criteria and be reported quarterly or annually depending on size. iii. Biomass is reported by consignment based on feedstock type, origin, and classification. Small facilities can use default or actual GHG values in reporting while larger facilities must use actual values.

Sustainability Requirements
• Sustainability standards will consist of two criteria:
i. greenhouse gas (GHG) lifecycle emissions target – need to demonstrate a minimum GHG saving of 60%
against the EU fossil-comparator
• Electricity – 79.2 gCO2eq/MJ
• Heat – 34.8 gCO2eq/MJ
ii. land criteria - restricts use of biomass sourced from land with high biodiversity or high carbon stock value
such as primary forest, peatland or wetland.
• Use of waste or material wholly derived from waste (incl. animal manures and slurries) are exempt from
sustainability standards.

Sustainability Reporting
• Introduced 1st April 2015, linked to receipt of payments from October 2015
• Applicable at all scales (biogas and biomethane)
• Each consignment of non-waste biomass required to meet the criteria
• Waste, or material wholly derived from waste (incl. slurry and manure) are exempt
• Applies to existing and new installations
• Only future fuels must comply
Quarterly Reporting (RHI only):
• Declare compliance with land and GHG criteria each quarter, linked to payments
Annual Reporting:
• Profiling data - incl. type, form and source of biomass
• Sustainability audit report, compiled by an independent auditor - stations with TIC of 1MWe and above

Performing GHG Calculations
• Generating stations (below 1MWe) can select either one of the following methods:
– Default value method - sets out default carbon intensities that are conservative, i.e. expected to be higher
than the emissions calculated using the actual value method (e.g. at processing stage defaults are calculated by
increasing typical emissions by c.40%)
– Actual value method - time consuming and requires verification, but allows generator to understand more
about supply chain and where savings can be made
• Actual values must be reported by generating stations of 1MWe and above.
