On these Slides I describe History, Introduction, Construction, Working and Principle, Types of Transformer, Ideal Transformer and Uses of Transformer.
4. History
1. The first Electrical power distribution system
developed by Edison in 1880s was transmitting
DC. It was designed for low voltage.
2. The second generation of power distribution
system was purposed by Tesla few years later.
His idea was to generate AC power of any
convenient voltage.
5. Transformer
A transformer is a device that changes
AC electric power at one voltage level to
another voltage level through the action
of a magnetic field.
It involves interchange of electric energy
between two or more electric systems.
6. Working and Principle
Working
1. When current in the primary coil
changes being alternating in
nature, a changing magnetic field
is produced
2. This changing magnetic field gets
associated with the secondary
through the soft iron core
3. Hence magnetic flux linked with
the secondary coil changes.
4. Which induces EMF in the
secondary.
7. Construction
A transformer consist of a rectangular or the core of soft
iron in the from of sheets insulated from one another. Two
separate coils of insulated wires, a primary coil and a
secondary coil are wound on the core.
These coils are well insulated of one another. The coil on
the input side is called Primary coil and on the out put side
is called Secondary coil.
8. Principle
It is based on principle of MUTUAL INDUCTION.
According to which an e.m.f. is induced in a coil
when current in the neighboring coil changes.
9. Types of Transformer
There are Generally two types of
Transformer.
1. Step up Transformer
2. Step down Transformer
Some important types of are given as…
1. Auto Transformer
2. Poly-phase Transformer
3. Leakage Transformer
4. Resonant Transformer
5. Instrument Transformer
10. Step up Transformer
A step up transformer is a device that converts low
alternating voltage to high alternating voltage.
In another word Ns > Np that is called step up
Transformer.
11. Step down Transformer
A step up transformer is a device that converts high
alternating voltage to low alternating voltage.
In another word Np > Ns that is called step up
Transformer.
12. Auto Transformer
An auto transformer has only a single winding with
two end terminals, plus a third at an intermediate tap
point.
13. Poly-Phase Transformer
For three phase supplies,
A bank of three individual single-phase transformer
can be used or all three phases can be made as a
single three-phase transformer.
14. Instrument Transformer
Current transformer, designed to be looped around
conductor.
A current transformer is a measurement device
provide a current in its secondary coil proportional to
the current flowing in its primary.
15. Resonant Transformer
A resonant transformer is a kind of leakage
transformer.
It uses the leakage inductance of its secondary
windings in combination with external capacitors, to
create one or more resonant circuits.
16. Ideal Transformer
An ideal transformer is a lossless device with
an input winding and an output winding. It has
the following properties.
1. No iron and copper losses.
2. No leakage fluxes.
3. A core of infinite magnetic permeability and
of infinite electrical resistivity.
4. Flux is confined to the core and winding
resistances are negligible.
17. Uses of Transformer
1. The Transformer used in Television and
Photography machines.
2. The transmission and distribution
alternating power is possible by
transformer.
3. Simple camera flash use fly back
Transformer.
4. Single and audio Transformer are used
couple in amplifier.
