Who is a Business Analyst ?
Job titles for business analysis practitioners include not only business analyst, but also business
systems analyst, systems analyst, requirements engineer, process analyst, product manager,
product owner, enterprise analyst, business architect, management consultant, business
intelligence analyst, data scientist, and more. Many other jobs, such as management, project
management, product management, software development, quality assurance and interaction
design rely heavily on business analysis skills for success.
The Business Analyst has evolved:
Over the period, the role of a Business Analyst has evolved. This role encompasses more than
the ability to document processes and apply technological expertise.
While the Systems Analyst belonged to the IT department, Business Analysts can now be found
within a number of places in organization structures:
Within the IT department acting as a conduit to and from the business
Within individual business units with responsibility for identifying business needs
Within a change management department coordinating and managing change across the
whole business
Many of the trends identified this year have been ongoing for several years and they continue to
evolve along with the practice of business analysis and re-iterate the demand for the same.
According to a recent survey among IT-based companies, 23 percent of IT executives
said they plan to hire talent with business analytics skills in 2012, up from 13 percent in
the previous year’s survey.
High Salary: With experience working as an IT Business Analyst, a person can move into
a position with a salary comfortably in the six-figure range. CNN money lists the average
salary for IT technology/business system analysts at $84,376, up 1.4 percent from 2012.
This can suggest the interest of job seekers to go for such a kind of profile.
Demand for greater organizational efficiency will increase demand for business
architecture, business rules and business process experts.
Federal, state and local government agencies will invest seriously in the role of business
analysts. After having spent billions of dollars on contract management and project
management to fix their troubles, government agencies have finally seen the light that
poor articulation of requirements is at the root of many of their functional ills.
Emergence of a hybrid role of project manager and business analyst to create greater
organizational efficiencies has been driving companies to hire more in BA profiles.
Business analysts are increasingly needed to make their business case to the stakeholders.

surge to cloud computing in years to come.
BAs will be recognized as critical to change management to avoid troubled projects.

Hiring through Job portals – A survey report
Print media has lost its popularity as a preferred hiring channel and there is a heavy reliance on
job portals who account for a majority of the overall hiring among Indian organizations, a survey
says. According to a People Matters-CareerBuilder survey, among the channels used by Indian
recruiting organizations, 82% of Indian employers prefer job portals as their preferred hiring
channel.
The survey further noted that Indian organizations still rely very less on social communities as
less than 20% of organizations rely heavily on social media hiring. The preferred social media
channels that are used for hiring are LinkedIn and Facebook.
The survey further noted that print media has lost its popularity as a preferred hiring channel as
most recruiters do not use print media to advertise jobs. Print advertising accounts for a
negligible percentage of hiring volumes among Indian recruiters as 84% of respondents said that
less than 10% of their hiring is done through print media.
"There is a heavy reliance on job portals among Indian recruiters, with portals accounting for a
majority of the overall hiring among Indian organizations," the report said.
Commenting on the survey findings, People Matters managing editor Ester Martinez said:
"Recruitment heads across industries in India have revealed that hiring quality talent and
reduction of cost and time to hire will be their key priority in the coming months, and they would
choose a recruitment service or channel based on its ability to help them build a steady and
reliable talent pipeline."
According to CareerBuilder India managing director Premiesh Machama: "In 2014 there is likely
to be new investments new job opportunities and this trend is likely to pick up pace post
elections. Whatever holdups had been for the past several quarters is going end and a burst of
new job creations post elections." The survey was conducted in November 2013 among Indian
corporations across all industries and sizes. A total of 201 organizations had participated in the
survey.
The Naukri Job Speak Index, which tracks monthly hiring activities online, rose 13 percent in
January 2014, compared to December 2013. The demand for professionals working in sales and
business development and project management continued to grow with the index moving up by
19 percent and 18 percent, respectively, in January, as compared to December. BPO and IT
sector have also witnessed an increase with the index moving up by 16 percent and 12 percent

Inferences:
Now-a-days Systems Analyst requirements are clubbed with BA roles, so BAs are all the
more important.
For a portal to have an impact, internet access is important and surveys report an 58%
YoY growth in rural and urban internet users.
Also to reach out to the target audience, the internet users are reported to be lying majorly
in the age group of 15-34 (about 75% of internet users).
Also most of the internet surfers are looking for topics related to recruitments and
training.
Not many portals are able to have complete coverage of all BA profile openings (mainly
3).
Go-To Market Strategy:
Karnataka, Maharashtra & TN are the top 3 locations where most of the BA profile job
openings are found. So while going for BA portal we should target these areas more
carefully.
Most of the BA job openings offer salary in the range of > 7 lacs p.a which suggests that
organizations understand the criticality of this post and would like to address accordingly.
The high number of job openings for people with less than 3 yrs. of work-ex suggests that
we can target the audience who graduate from B-schools or undergraduate colleges, and
also to those who have developed a fair knack of BA while working for a while.
There are a very few portals who offer BA profiles for summer internship or some skill
based training, certification modules which are recognized in the industry. These areas
can be targeted and visibility & popularity can be improved.
