fonts, a personal firewall, KDE, and much more.
3. About SimplyMEPIS
SimplyMEPIS is a mature and ready to use desktop
operating system for PCs and Apple computers
that have Intel or AMD 32 or 64 bit processors. It
is easier than Vista and intuitive for XP and Win98
users. SimplyMEPIS includes all of the
applications that most users need and want.
SimplyMEPIS is designed to replace or work side
by side with Vista or XP on PCs and OSX on Apple
computers.
4. History
MEPIS was designed as an alternative to SUSE Linux,
Red Hat Linux, and Mandriva Linux (formerly Mandrake)
which, in the creator Warren Woodford's opinion, were
too difficult for the average user. MEPIS's first official
release was on May 10, 2003.
In 2006, MEPIS made a transition from using Debian
packages to using Ubuntu packages. SimplyMEPIS 6.0,
released in July 2006, was the first version of MEPIS to
incorporate the Ubuntu packages and repositories.
SimplyMEPIS 7.0 discontinued the use of Ubuntu
binary packages in favor of a combination of MEPIS
packaged binaries based on Debian and Ubuntu
source code, combined with a Debian Stable OS core
and extra packages from Debian package pools.
5. Name
According to Warren Woodford,
the name MEPIS is pronounced like
"Memphis", with the extra letters removed.
Basically, it is pronounced "MEP-us" with a
short "e" ("meppis"). Originally, the word
"MEPIS" didn't mean anything in particular;
it came about by mistake. When Woodford
misunderstood a friend over a bad Skype
connection, he decided to use the name
because it was a simple five-letter word and
there were no other companies or products
with that name.
6. Programs, Programs, Programs …
SimplyMEPIS 8.0 arrives with a complete choice of
the best of programs necessary for most people's
pleasure and productivity, all delivered on top of a
Debian 5 stable core using the 2.6.27 Linux kernel.
We've already included great applications for you,
such as the award-winning OpenOffice Writer that
provides excellent compatibility with MS-Office, the
popular browser Firefox with its great multimedia
capability, or the terrific Amarok music player that

download and painless installation from Debian and
our own Community, keeping you on the cutting

8. Overview
The MEPIS Linux LiveCD that you have just opened
combines a bootable operating system with an installer--that
means you can test-run MEPIS Linux directly from this CD
without touching your existing Windows system. This way,
your current applications and data are not at any risk while
you explore and test this new OS.
This LiveCD will operate nearly identically to a MEPIS Linux
installation on your hard disk, and it presents you with the
actual full MEPIS desktop for you to work with. Speed while
using the LiveCD will be limited by your computer
environment (because it is running from your CD-rom), so
please be patient as programs load. Once installed and
running from your hard-drive, you will find MEPIS Linux runs
very quickly.
Once you decide you are ready to try MEPIS, you can then
use this CD to install the operating system, either alongside
your current operating system ("dual boot") or on its own.
We'll guide you through that later.
