2. ENVIRONMENTAL
PORTRAIT PROJECT
Teacher Appreciation
Week May 6-10th
1. Introduce the concept of environmental
portraits to students by showing famous
examples (if you have not covered this
during the school year).
2. Students choose teachers (I let senior
pick first, juniors second, etc).
3. Students write up a one-page feature
story on the teacher, quoting students.
4. Students make plans to photograph their
teacher.
5. Turn in by April 19th for me to get it
printed (Costco, Sam‟s Club, Walmart)
3. WRITE UPS
1 Same font as the yearbook.
2. At least 16 point font for
readability.
3. Mount on construction paper
and laminate for hallway
presentation.
4. Put up display Monday
morning of Teacher Appreciation
Week. Take down at end of week
and give to teacher to keep.
7. I okayed these shots because of the
quality of their photocomposition. But as a
rule, no pictures inside of the school
should be accepted.
8. NOT GOOD… I TAKE OFF POINTS IF
THEY TAKE THE PICTURES AT SCHOOL.
9. PITFALLS TO AVOID
• Try to include all teachers (they hold grudges) by
getting introductory journalism classes involved.
• Make sure the pictures are high enough quality to
be 8x10 or bigger.
• Proofread!
• Mount the pictures and write-ups early (laminating &
cutting takes time)
11. THEME PROPOSAL
After students complete the visual brainstorming project they should
compile their thoughts into a theme proposal for next year‟s book that
includes
• A statement for why this theme makes sense for this school year
• Cover Idea – Sketch or InDesign
• Open/Close Ideas – Sketch or InDesign with draft copy
• Title Page
• Divider Page
• Ads Page
• Coverage Spread
• Sports Spread
• Full Book Link Idea
All spreads should utilize the 1-2 fonts and should highlight the color
scheme and any graphic elements to be used throughout the book.
12. SENIOR SCRAPBOOK
This project is nice for seniors to complete their last two
weeks. It‟s their one chance to be “scrapbook-y” in
yearbook.
Scrapbooks stay in room for future staffs to see.
13. SENIOR LEGACY PPTS/VIDEOS
We lose our most talented staff
members each year – this
project allows us to capture
graduation seniors‟ strengths.
Last year, all of my seniors
made PowerPoints ranging
from InDesign shortcuts to
„how to survive being a boy in
yearbook‟.
This year, they are making
video tutorials.

15. SENIOR AD TEMPLATES
Mail out with ad
contracts to senior
parents. Give an early
bird deadline – ours is
the 2nd week of
school.
We raised $28,000 in
ad revenue ($440 a
page) by October
using this method
16. APPLY FOR AWARDS
Make the outgoing
Editor-In-Chief draft a
letter to put with each
yearbook you send out
for judging giving an
explanation for anything
that occurred during the
production process you
think judges should
know about.
17. AWARDS BANQUET
We hold ours a week or two
before delivery (before the
craziness begins) at a local
Italian restaurant.
Students give out gag gifts and
we announce
Copy, Design, Photo of the
Yearbook Winners.
$100 scholarships for seniors
or $100 credit on account for
underclassmen.
18. SENIOR FAREWELLS
Much like the teacher
appreciation write
ups, each year staff
members celebrate the
accomplishments of our
graduating seniors with a
photo and write up.
Put up the Monday of the
seniors last week of school
in the journalism hallway
with a banner reading
“Congratulations, Journalis
m Seniors”
19. SENIOR FAREWELL LUNCHEON – LAST DAY
We always get the book put on a cake with all of the senior’s names on it.
20. SENIOR
GIFTS, give out senior gifts, and staff members go around and say who
We eat lunch, FLOWERS, TESTIMONIALS
they’ll miss and why.
21. SENIOR GIFTS
Planned by the incoming EIC. Cheetah Snuggies, Pottery Barn towels, Custom Made
Boxes…
22. COVERAGE ANALYSIS
• Print out the final pages of the index and count how many people were
covered 3x or more. Determine your coverage percentage, then increase
start planning on how to increase it by at least 10% for the following year.
• Create a target list of people who were only covered once. Brainstorm
coverage spreads they can be on next year
• Coverage idea for fall:
• Divide student body list by the number of people on your staff (this
may only work for staffs over 40 if you have a large school)
• Our school = 1500 enrolled/ 43 staff members = 35 people per staff
member.
• Each staff member is then in charge of making sure the people on
their list are covered 3x or more in the book (I could see incentives
tied to this as well).
23. AD SALES
• Create folders for
each staff member
filled with ad contracts
& example of last
year‟s ad
• Assign ad locations to
students so there is
no overlap
24. CREATE A YEARBOOK WEBSITE
(IF YOU DON‟T HAVE ONE ALREADY)
Our goal this year is to create
a yearbook website
highlighting photo content as
well as giving pertinent
information for senior
congratulatory ads, business
ads, and inventory of old books
for sale.
Sarah Nichols‟s staff does a
great job with this :
