Social Media in Africa
Agnes Lesage
Context&trends
Check the story of chief Kariuki in Lanet Umoia, 100 miles from Nairobi.
He says even the thieves in his village follow him.
Social Media would not apply in Africa?
Kariuki's official Twitter page
shows 300 followers, but the
former teacher estimated that
thousands of the 28,000
residents in his area receive
the messages he sends out
directly and indirectly.
He said many of his
constituents, mostly
subsistence farmers, cannot
afford to buy smart phones,
but can access tweets
through a third-party mobile
phone application. Others
forward the tweets via text
message.

Bribespot.com
Bribespot is an app that allows you to see how much
corruption is going on around. Using your smartphone (or
a website) you can report locations where bribes are
requested/paid, indicate the size of a bribe and area of
government affected by it.
By accumulating data from thousands of anonymous
users, we turn isolated users into powerful movement

Water for people
http://watermapmonitordev.appspot.com/
Millions of dollars are wasted every year on tens of thousands of
water systems around the world that break, become abandoned
and prove to be unsustainable.
Using Android cell phones, combined with GPS and Google Earth
software, FLOW gives community members, partners, volunteers,
and others the ability to record data: location, service status,
images, and other information. This data is then displayed online
to signal whether a project is up and running, broken, or on the
verge of disrepair and requiring maintenance.

Editor's Notes

  1. Nowadays, you very much exist for what you share. And what you share is what people will know from you, from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. However, I existed even before Google (yes!). Was brought up in France, stuudied political sciences & communications, started working on the web, then engaged in humanitarian action with the ICRC (Angola, Cambodia, Darfur). Started working again as a digital project manager in Zimbabwe, now in Lesotho. Take care of web sites & social media, and also interested in ICT for development.
  2. I’d like make a quick poll here and check how many of you ahve a personal blog? (etc?)
  3. Now I ‘d like to know about you, and more specifically: - What comes to your mind when you think of social media? How do you use social media currently? what has been your latest post on facebook or twitter (if any), what is your biggest frustration with it, and possibly what you’d like to be able to do beyond your current use – what prevents you to do it?
  4. Now lets us start, but please relax: All references and links in this presentation will be made available to you on this URL We are going to talk tech, but no jargon allowed.

  7. 9. So one may call this « the biggest shift since the industrial revolution »
  10. And for those who need more evidence to be convinced, I would recommend a video you can find on Youtube that was updated with latest statistics and facts. Now their conclusion is:
  11. Now you may tell me… this does not apply to us here in Africa…? That would be without counting with African inventivity! (…) Now this may sound like a Hype, but statistics are here.

  13. SA stats here (…) Afria is the fastest growing mobile market in the world. The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, conducted a survey to better understand how young people spend their free time. MXit was the answer for 30 percent of respondents - far more popular than watching TV, talking with family and friends, reading and - not surprisingly - homework.
