  9. 9. <ul><li>The Riot of 59AD </li></ul><ul><li>Fighting broke out in the amphitheatre between the Pompeians and a group of visiting Nucerians </li></ul><ul><li>There was exchanges of abuse, then stone throwing and ultimately “swords were drawn” </li></ul><ul><li>Many people were wounded or killed </li></ul><ul><li>Emperor Nero barred Pompeii from holding and public events for 10 years. </li></ul>Historical Overview

Historical Overview <ul><li>The Earthquake of 62 AD </li></ul><ul><li>Tacitus tells us that in 62AD an earthquake largely demolished the town of Pompeii. </li></ul><ul><li>The philosopher Seneca confirms this by saying “Pompeii…had been laid low by an earthquake” </li></ul><ul><li>Houses, buildings and statues were damaged and destroyed. </li></ul><ul><li>Pompeii’s water system was damaged and flooding occurred in the streets. </li></ul><ul><li>Eventually a huge rebuilding program was undertaken – there is archaeological evidence for this. </li></ul>Complete the source questions on the earthquake of 62AD in the booklet.
  11. 11. Historical Overview <ul><li>The Eruption of Vesuvius 79AD </li></ul><ul><li>August 24 th 79AD about 1pm: Mt Vesuvius roars to life, eventually engulfing the coastal towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. </li></ul>

Discoveries and Excavations <ul><li>Pompeii and Herculaneum are among the earliest archaeological sites. </li></ul><ul><li>The history of their excavations reflects the history and philosophy of Pompeii over the past 200 years. </li></ul><ul><li>Both cities were discovered by accident: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Pompeii by workmen digging a canal in the late 1500’s uncovered wall paintings </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Herculaneum by workmen digging a well in 1711 discovered marble fragments from a theatre. </li></ul></ul>
