What is Obesity? Obesity is an excess accumulation of body fat at least 20% over average weight for age, sex, and height. According to World Health Organization Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. WHO break down obesity into following categories: Any BMI ≥ 35 or 40 is severe obesity A BMI of ≥ 35 or 40–44.9 or 49.9 is morbid obesity A BMI of ≥ 45 or 50 is super obese.
Childhood Obesity Quick Facts about Obesity: Rates of childhood obesity have increased greatly between 1980 and 2010. Currently 10% of children worldwide are either overweight or obese Overweight children have an increased risk of being overweight as adults. Genetics, behavior, and family environment play a role in childhood overweight. Childhood overweight increases the risk for certain medical and psychological conditions. Encourage overweight children to be active, decrease screen time, and develop healthful eating habits.

Childhood obesity Weight categories are determined based on these percentiles and are defined as: Underweight < 5th percentile Normal 5th to < 85th percentile At risk of overweight 85th to <95th percentile Overweight 95th percentile and above
