The document discusses the cultural influences of Spain, Panama, and Venezuela on the presenter. For Spain, they would include videos of Spanish football and documentaries showing the passion for the sport. They would also include evidence of Real Madrid football celebrations and examples of traditional Galician gastronomy like empanadas and cheeses. For Panama, the presenter would include pictures of the Panama Canal locks and of traditional Panamanian clothing. For Venezuela, they would provide examples of baseball, including pictures of player Omar Vizquel, as well as samples of the diverse Venezuelan cuisine like arepas and pabellon criollo.
1. Question K
If all of the world´s cultural heritage
(sports, music, fashion, architecture, literature, pai
nting, etc..) was contained in a time capsule, what
would you include to demonstrate the legacy of
your country?
A presentation by: Aitor Veiga Rotundo
2. Spain, Panama and Venezuela:
My cultural melting pot.
Most people identify strongly with only one culture or nation;
the one in which they were born.
In my case I was born into the Venezuelan culture and the
Spanish/Galician culture of my parents, and adopted a third
by living in Panama since I was 17 years old.
These three cultures have shaped me as an individual, and
they are all an essential part of me, if all the cultural
heritage in the world was being conserved in a time capsule
I would add the things that have made a big impression or
influenced me the most from Spain, Panama and
Venezuela.
3. Spain-Football
Football is the most popular sport in Spain and
among Spanish descendants such as me. I would
include videos and documentaries of Spanish
football at both international and club level in the
time capsule in order to preserve its tactics and
beauty as well as the passion of Spaniards for the
sport.
Personally I was influenced by watching games of
the Spanish national team with my family, learning
through this to cope with defeat and to enjoy
victory with humility. The values of the sport teach
us the determination and team effort needed to
make your dreams come true.
Following family tradition, my favorite football
team is Real Madrid, which is the most successful
team in the history of Spanish and European
football. The picture in the following slide was
taken by me at the Cibeles Plaza in Madrid, during
the celebration of the 32th league title won by Real
Madrid in 2011, it serves as evidence of the
passion and joy that this team creates.

5. Spain- Galician Gastronomy
My family comes from the small town of Sada
located in Galicia, Spain; and thus I had the
privilege to grow up eating the succulent
delicacies of the Galician Cuisine.
Galician gastronomy is known for its wide use
of seafood such as
oysters, octopus, shrimp, and so on.
Galician cheeses are creamy in texture and of
refined flavor. Examples are Arzua cheese
better know as “tetilla cheese” and Cebreiro
Cheese.
Besides the widely known seafood, Galician
gastronomy has other delicious dishes such
as Galician empanada, which can be made
with different fillings such as
fish, chicken, etc. The picture in the following
slide shows a traditional empanada made by
my Grandmother for a special occasion.

7. Panama-The Canal
The Panama Canal is a ship canal that goes
across the Isthmus of Panama and connects
the Pacific ocean with the Caribbean
sea, thus enabling the easy transit of goods.
Because of its importance and sheer
size, the Panama Canal is considered one
of the modern marvels of the world.
The canal is an important passage for
international maritime trade. There are locks
at each end to lift ships up to Lake Gatun
(26m above sea-level) which is a man made
lake that was created in order to reduce the
amount of work required for a sea-level
connection.
Currently the Panama Canal is being
expanded in order to allow more and bigger
ships to pass through it, lowering costs for
the international flow of consumer goods
and prime matter. The picture in the
following slide was taken by me and shows
the miraflores locks.

9. Panama- Traditional Clothes
The most important piece of
traditional clothing in the
Panamanian culture is the “pollera de
gala”.
The Pollera is a female attire that
consists of in two pieces of clothing
the “blusa” and the “polleron” that
together form a majestic dress.
The traditional dress is accompanied
by the use of different hair garments
called “peinetas” and “tembleques”.
The picture in the following slide
shows my little sister using this
Panamanian traditional dress.

11. Venezuela- Baseball
Baseball is the most popular sport in Venezuela. Its
popularity originated with the cultural influence of oil
companies from the United States in the early twentieth
century.
The Venezuelan baseball league was established in
1945. It is a winter league, which means that it’s played
when the Major League is on vacation. The most
successful team in the league is “Leones de Caracas”
which is my personal and family team.
Venezuelan baseball players are among the best in the
world, many of them winning awards in the Major
League Baseball (MLB).
The 2012 MLB season was particularly good for
Venezuela. Venezuelan baseball player Miguel Cabrera
got the highest batting average, most home runs and
runs batted in (RBIs) and Venezuelan pitcher Felix
Hernandez threw the first perfect game for any Latin
American player. It was also a season for
nostalgia, since one the greatest players in the history
of the game, the Venezuelan Omar Vizquel, retired
from the game. The picture in the following slide shows
Omar Vizquel playing one of his last games with the
Toronto Blue Jays.

13. Venezuela-Gastronomy
Venezuelan gastronomy is very diverse in
nature because of the mixtures of different
cultures that occurred during the European
colonization of the Americas.
Most elements of Venezuelan gastronomy
come from southern Europe, Africa and the
natives.
A peculiarity about Venezuelan gastronomy is
the abundance of different fresh cheeses, that
are used as filling or ingredient for different
traditional dishes.
The most famous dish in Venezuelan cuisine
is the “Arepa” which is basically a flat and
round patty made with corn dough.
Venezuelan arepas are grilled in the
traditional “budare” and filled with a myriad of
different ingredients ranging from traditional
cheese to octopus.
The Venezuelan national dish is called
“pabellon criollo”, it is formed by fried
plantain, meat, black beans and white rice.
