next.
Push and Pull factors?
• Push – things that push
you away from a (rural)
area, often problems. E.g.
• Pull – things that pull
(draw) you to a new
(urban) area, often
positive things.
• TASK;
– Write down all the push and
pull factors you are about
to see once the video has
stopped …
PUSH PULL
LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Nairobi : a city in an LEDC
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Location
• Nairobi is in western
Kenya
• It is the capital and
the largest city
• Nairobi’s population
in 1995 was 1.5
million. It had
doubled by 2010.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Population Growth
• This rapid growth is
due mainly to rural-
urban migration.
• A young population
means that the rate
of natural increase is
very high too.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Population Growth
• Many push factors
encourage people to leave
rural areas including
poverty and unemployment
• Pull factors like the
promise of better jobs
and services encourage
people to move to Nairobi.
• Video here of a Kenyan
farmer who has had to
leave farming
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Problems
• This increase in
population has led to a
shortage of cheap
housing and
overcrowding.
• Most households share 1
room with 6-7 people in
each household.
• This results in a high
population density.
(73,000 people per
sq.km.).
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Overcrowding
Overcrowding
Problems(2)
• lower standards of
health, hygiene and
sanitation.
• Lack of basic services
like water supply and
mains drainage.
• Illegal slums may be
pulled down by property
developers causing
homelessness.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Shanty towns
• 55% of Nairobi's
population live on 6%
of the city’s area in
shanty towns.
• They are mainly to
the W. of Nairobi on
the edge, along
roads, railway lines
or by rivers.
• An example is
Kibera.
LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
What is a Shanty Town?
• People in LEDC’s are moving to ______in huge numbers –
rural to urban migration. They move because life in rural
(countryside) areas is _____. Drought may stop ______
growing or they don’t have enough land to grow all the
crops they need to ____their family. The ____ offers a
lot more to these people but they arrive with _______ ,
including a place to stay. As a result they find whatever
______ they can to build a home beside the ____ or

David’s Story
• This is my home. I live here with my parents,
four brothers and two sisters. I am the
eldest; I am fifteen years old. We pay £25 a
month rent for our house.
• It is made from corrugated iron, which we
were able to buy, and mud and wood, which we
found.
• We don’t have our own toilet; we share one
with 10 other families. This gets very stinky,
and many people go elsewhere.
…
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
David’s Story
• Outside our house there is sewage running
down the mud street. It smells very bad.
• We don’t have running water in our house; we
have to queue up and buy it from the man who
lives three houses away. We cook outside
using charcoal. We buy this from the woman
next door.
• I go to school when our family can afford to
pay school fees, but often I can’t go as we are
too poor.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
This is where David lives
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
How to build David's House -
Instructions
In pairs, you are going to build a scale model of David's family
home.
•1. Carefully cut out all the house pieces on Activity Sheet 12.
There are two sides made from corrugated iron and one side each
made from mud and wood.
•2. Make David's home. The house pieces fit together to make a
house. Just like real houses of this type, there are no tabs to help
you put the house together, so you must use sticky tape to join the
pieces as best as you can. The house does not have a roof (although
the real one does!).
•3. Organise the pieces to fit onto the base map on Activity Sheet
12. The house could be as big as you can make it. There is no right
way of building the house, though some designs are better than
others.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
How to build David's House -
Instructions
• 4. Cut out and make the furniture on Activity Sheet 12.
There is one bed, a mat that some of the children sleep on
and a storage unit. To make these cut out the shapes along
the solid lines and fold along the dotted lines. Use glue to
join them together. Organise these in a logical way in the
house.
• 5. Cut out the people in David's family on Activity Sheet
12. Think about where the members of David's family will
sleep. They can either sleep in the bed or on the mat.
Make sure they all have a place to sleep.
• 6. Now think about where David's family will sit during the
day. Fold them on their dotted lines and arrange.
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
Imagine you are David and
answer these questions
• What problems do you face living in Kibera?
• How much space does the family have?
• What problems would this lead to?
• What health problems might the family have?
• What are the good things in David's life?
• Did anything surprise you when you carried
out this task?
L/O: What is it like to live in a Shanty Town?LO: What is it like to and why do people live in a Shanty Town?
How would your life be
different if you lived in
David's house for a week?
