2. Renaissance – means “rebirth” in French. This was a time
period following the middle ages that lasted from the 1300-
1500s in the italian city of florence.
Renaissance is a period of revival in classical learning
characterized by a sharp increase in secular values and
increased interest in learning the classics.
3. Characteristics of Renaissance Art
- Artists showed religious and nonreligious scenes
-Art reflected a great interest in nature
- Figures were lifelike and three-dimensional
-Bodies looked active and were shown moving
-Scenes showed real people doing everyday tasks
-Faces expressed what people were thinking
-Paintings were often symmetrical
-Full backgrounds showed perspective

7. High renaissance art
Flourished for about 35 years, from the early 1490s to 1527 focused on self-confident
Humanism .With the invention and use of the printing press, there was a greater spread of
ideas, and artists could sell prints of their work. Travel also increased during the High
Renaissance; therefore, art became more international.

More naturalism

Sense of stability and order (static compositions)

8. High renaissance art
Michelangelo prescribed to “Neo-Platonism,” which says God
put the sculpture within the rock and that the artist must
uncover it, good art comes from divine inspiration and beauty is
a path to salvation.
Raphael created works that perfectly expressed the classical
spirit—harmonious, beautiful, and serene.
Leonardo, another High Renaissance artist, began to create deep
paintings with spatial illusions, which will be more prevalent in
the Baroque period.

body to study anatomy.
Painted very realistic pictures such as the Mona Lisa
and Last Supper.

The Catholic Church held a great deal of power during
the middle ages and a result financed most of the art
project during this era.
The location of this art movement was in Europe.
Artists were paid to decorate churches and create
religious related pieces for the public to enjoy.

with several different orders and being prevalent and
spreading influence widely.

Architecture played a very important role fo

The more splended the architecture the more
the church believed it was praising God.

built.
20. Romanesque Period
The style of architecture that was in vogue was known as
Romanesque because it copied the pattern and proportion of
the architecture of the Roman empire.

o An art technique that creates pictures out of ll pieces of
