2. Problem
Many video games are not
accessible to color blind
people because of the color
schemes that are used. For
example some games use
only color to distinguish
between different teams.
What kinds of design elements are needed to
make a simple game accessible to color blind
people?
3. Designing a Solution
I learned that the best way to solve a
problem like this is to use the engineering
design process.
Define the problem
Do background research
Specify requirements
Create solutions
Choose the best solution
Develop the solution
Build a prototype
Test and redesign
4. Background Research
1 in 20 men and 1 in 200 women are
colorblind.
Red/green is the most common form of color
blindness.
While some games are now offering
color blind friendly colors as a setting
option, many of the most popular games
still remain ignorant to this problem.
5. Design Requirements
A successful design will use shapes, markings, or
symbols to distinguish objects in a video game that
would normally be recognized by color.
6. Solution
I chose to place a symbol on the bad objects in my
game so that players can distinguish between the
ones that they should click on and the ones that they
should avoid.
9. Application
If more game developers become aware of this
problem and the simplicity of the solution more
games can be made accessible to people who are
color blind.
